128GB storage, 60Hz display, ~3400mAh battery capacity still in 2024, you can squeeze costumers for 3-4 years but then they eventually start questioning these specs, people are not stupid.

It's getting rather ridiculous when those specs are even below those of low end Android devices

For less than the standard 15 I picked up a Redmagic 9 Pro. Similar weight to the bigger Pro, but has a 6500mAh battery with 80W charging; 6.8 120Hz display that adjusts for content; Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (so basically an A17 Pro); 512GB storage; an absurd 16Gb of ram; 2160Hz PWM; ridiculous brightness; and NO CAMERA BUMP!!!

So all in all, a far better device -- just Android. Apple really need to pull their finger out and start passing on some of those Pro Mid range specs to the standard model

Apple's iPhone shipments in China dropped by 33% in February compared to the same month last year, according to governement figures
[…]
The overall Chinese smartphone market contracted by almost a third in February, according to research firm Canalys.

I feel like the first paragraph and the last paragraph should have been closer together. Not stated is if the overall market drop was from the previous month or year ago month, so maybe that makes a difference. But whenever sales climb or drop, the first question should always be “and what did the overall market do?”.

Your point perfectly illustrates what I’ve been saying. Vote with your $$$. Buy the phone that has the features you want at the price point you’re willing to spend.

If enough people do that apple will get the message.

Changing price for the local market might be the only way to increase the sales.

Still the iPhones market share keeps growing overall… perhaps people significantly prefer the software and support experience.

I think because they are still fallen for the legend of "better software and support experience"...

...at least, if they take a look into their wallet! ;)

I’m sorry, what? A Redmagic 9 Pro is a low end android device? End of argument.

But honestly, you’re mostly listing dumb specs for a phone.
120hz refresh rate? Barely useful in desktop gaming. But *please* find me an iPhone CS player that can tell the difference.

Ram? iPhone pipelines for memory is so great no one asks for more ram. Is that a problem on the android side?
Larger battery, I mean if your phone is inefficient, that’s a plus I guess.

Meanwhile, worse screen color and worse camera, which are two not so small things for consumers.

But hey, if you want a 120hz gaming phone (god it’s hard not to laugh), I guess knock yourself out. Just don’t think you represent the average consumer…or gamer.

luxury brands have always commanded higher prices.
the same high end fashion garments are made in sweat shops for next to nothing.
it's marketing and perception that make people willing to pay more.

and value to one person is not to another.

Apple have difference prices items in their range.
not quite rock bottom Android devices (which are slow and barely work) but I guess the hand me down and secondhand market allows people to buy one a few generations out of current. Apple also support hardware for longer. I've had Android phones that get one update and no more.

This. Especially when most Chinese buy higher capacity storage, the price equation quickly changes. I expect Apple to have iPhone 16 starting at 256GB for the same price.

A18, 256GB Storage, WiFi 6E. Upgraded Camera ( 60hz Display and Modem remains the same ).

I just dont know if that is enough. When WIFi and Camera are minor upgrade. A18 might be a technical marvel but we cross the line when speed matter as much. Especially when comparing to A16 or A15.

Which leaves us at 256GB. Basically Apple is lowering the price. But it will be interesting to see what will happen to iPhone 15 if that happens. I assume iPhone 15 will start at 256? Or will they lower their 128GB by $150.

That phone costs $900 in the U.S.

What "low end Android device" (let's be generous and set the bar at $400 to count as low end) beats the iPhone 15 in screen quality (color accuracy matters too), battery life, CPU performance, camera quality, available storage, etc.?

The RedMagic 9 Pro is available less than an 256GB iPhone 13 here -- probably 'mid range' then. Whilst you could pick up a Xiaomi, Vivo, etc. for half the price and have it beaten in all specs (except OS of course)

RAM: all I ever see here complaints about lack of memory: Safari tabs closing, apps restarting, etc. Then everyone wanting more in the next iPhone or wishing for it in a rumour thread

120Hz: I see so many people on Reddit/here recommending the Pro over the standard model due to Pro motion (personally I don't care for it, but hey I have it)

Battery: when is there not a comment in a rumour thread here asking for more battery? I got home today with 80% battery... I can't remember the last time I saw that on an iPhone

Camera: yeah crappy compared to a 14/15. You'd want a Xiaomi 13T Pro (also less than an iPhone 13) for something that competes with the 15 Pro (according to various reviews). Mega camera bump mind, it's why I didn't go for it

I mostly use my phone for as a phone, web, and reading (novels/manga). Hence the screen is convenient and the nice PWM rate means my eyes don't suffer at night. And games? I play a few emulators, something not so easy to do on iOS

It cost me ~$650 in Japan. For comparison, a 256GB iPhone 13 is ~$720 here

A Xiaomi 13T Pro would cost you $600 here and when considering it, I watched a number of reviews comparing it to an 15 Pro (the camera bump definitely competes :D) The basic 13T ~$450, the chipset isn't great if you want to go play Genshin or something, but if you want pictures, battery life, and a nice screen it's a solid pick.

So GREAT!!!! You found the phone you like for the reasons you like it. You're willing to deal with terrible software (which is what many reviewers of the Redmagic phones mention) because you want a limited number of maximum specs (ram, storage) while sacrificing other specs (camera, screen quality)! GREAT!!!!

But your choice says nothing about the value of an iPhone to a person who has a different metric of values than you do.

This will never happen in the way you're suggesting. IF someone is buying an Android in order to "shame" Apple into lowering prices, what they're really saying is that they want an iPhone. It's this that drives much of the negativity on Macrumors. They WANT an iPhone, but they want it to be cheaper, with a different feature set, etc.

Mobile phones come with a whole range of options and trade-offs. Period. A buyer makes the choice they make for a complex set of reasons.

i think I7guy was saying if enough people start buying Android phones because of features Android offer that Apple don't then it would make economic sense for Apple to add them.

As you said, people buy phones for a lot of different reasons.
Some like a mix of offerings between both platforms and horse trade to pick the most suitable, if no ideal.

There are some peeves I have about Apple products but overall, I am extremely happy how they work and the value they offer and how long they last.

Some people want to play pirated ROM games. For them it wont be on Apple products. The just want to be able to.

So what exactly do those specs mean for the user compared to an iPhone?

Your line of reasoning is nothing new. Since the day I first got an iPhone, people have been comparing iPhones to android phones, and often criticising the iPhones for their supposedly anaemic specs on paper. The LG G3 was first with a 4k screen, for example, while the iPhone stayed with retina throughout.

And yet people continue to choose the iPhone, and here we are today. And of course, the kicker is that the iPhone continues to deliver a great experience despite its weaker specs. Or sometimes, because of it (one particularly memorable discussion was when the A7 chip in the 5s delivered a vastly better performance despite having less ram and fewer cores compared to the snapdragon).

You can rattle off a list of specs, and my question to you is and always will be the same - so....?

No need to upgrade every two years. iPhone are built to last. Why spend so much on incremental upgrades? I have been using my 11 Pro and noticed no issues like lag. And my original battery is at 88% capacity, so is still good for another year.
