I've been conducting a rather informal study of my own regarding iPhone Pro users. Turns out, around 96% of all iPhone Pro users I talked to don't use ANY pro features. None. They're not even aware of them. None of them used RAW capture, ProRes, or Log. USB3 transfers? Hah... none of them plugged the iPhone to a computer, let alone capture video to an external SSD ("what's that?" was the answer). Two thirds couldn't find a difference between the ProMotion display and the regular one. "You know about LiDAR? It improves portrait in some situations", "Oh, I always forgot to use Portrait mode".

They just bought it because it was the "Pro" model.

This year the difference is even narrower between models.
I’d rather be seen with an older Pro model than with a newer non-Pro.

That may change this year.

These specs would instantly kill off at least everything prior to the iPhone 16, and will likely make the base 16 a tough sell.

I have a hard time believing it will be between $400 and $500 with those specs. They might as well discontinue everything prior to the 16.

The iPhone 14 will very likely be discontinued when the new SE launches. The 15 may even be discontinued.

Regarding Face vs Touch ID on the next SE…I’ve recently purchased the new iPad Air with the Touch side button, and also an iPhone 16 which is my first Face ID device. I’d much much rather have Face vs Touch if I were buying the next SE.

Having just traded in my SE 2, I’ve long been a Touch ID fan, but the side button implementation has been a bit of a struggle. I’m using the pin far more than usual. The side button doesn’t work as well as the old Home button. I dismissed people complaining that Face wasn’t included in the latest iPad Air, but I think I was wrong.

is the only difference between an iPhone 16 and the rumored iPhone SE a notch vs Dynamic Island?

I have mine as a Shazam button and it’s awesome!
I am convinced the “Camera Button” is the incomplete vision of what the Action button was meant to be. The Camera button should be customisable. For example if you assign Shazam to the Camera button, you should be able to touch it to initiate Shazam, then scroll to select a music service, press to purchase/download/add to library or Playlist. Something like that.

Mini didn't sell well primarily for its marketing name "mini". I've had this conversation with a few people where they asserted they did not want a "mini" iPhone. Only because I had one and had a feeling the name was putting them off did they get to hold my 13 mini and try it out and were surprised that "it's not really mini". I'd bring the size up to 5.6" from 5.4" and I'd drop the mini name.

iPhone *should* come in three sizes with simpler marketing.png

I have my doubts that Apple will risk cannibalizing the recently launched iPhone16 with a much more economically attractive phone just for Apple Intelligence reasons. I'd bet it will come with an A16 Bionic, rather than the brand new A18, and potentially the 8GB RAM, although I think we'll be stuck with 6GB. Still the SE4 would be a very good machine.

The first-generation iPhone SE was launched in 2016, Apple didn’t immediately remove the older iPhone 5s, but they discontinued it later that year.

When Apple introduced the 2nd gen iPhone SE in 2020, it immediately replaced the iPhone 8 in their lineup, which was the previous entry-level model.

With 3rd gen iPhone SE in 2022, the lineup already had iPhone 13, 12, with the iPhone 11 still being sold as an entry-level alternative. 11 was discontinued in September 2022 when the iPhone 14 series was launched.

So yea, iPhone 14 and 14 plus most likely get axed when SE4 goes on sale and maybe even standard iPhone 15, leaving only the iPhone 15 Plus model on sale from previous gen.

Not gonna happen. This will leave a $300 gap in their lineup and would eat into their margins.

- notch instead of dynamic island
- no action button
- no camera shutter
- no ultra wideview

Otherwise identical. Who would buy an iphone 16, 15 or 14 against those specs, at (almost) half the price?

My bet is still on a 5.4-5.8" screen, and the A17 at the max. They are selling A15 (i14), A16 (i15) and A18(i16/i16pro) so there is a gap in their processor line-up. Furthermore, the A17 is also AI compatible.

i am willing to pay MORE money for a SMALL phone. small doesn't mean cheap, Apple, it means convenient and premium. smaller phones used to be more expensive because it required higher quality tech to build them, then we got into the era when big flashy screens became "premium" and it's sucked ever since.

Apple have tried it with 12 and 13 minis, but the market said “Nope”.

I have a 15 Pro, but I kinda am over the massive camera array. So much so that I might downgrade to a modern iPhone if it only has a single camera.

I feel like the photos I’ve taken have been great for many years, specifically when I had the XR, I got some shots that I’m still super impressed by. That phone only had 1 camera.

The user experience as a physical device having a minimal camera bump is very high to me. I didn’t think the pro camera setup would bother me, and it didn’t with my 11 Pro or my 12 Pro, but this 15 Pro has just gotten too big. Out of hand.

Give me one little camera, which I am absolutely sure will still take awesome shots, and I may downgrade to an SE next year.
I've only had single camera cameras IPhone 4S, 5S, SE and my current phone the SE 2nd gen. The photos they take have always impressed me with just a single camera. I also like the sleek look with no huge camera assembly on the back

Oh, I just realized something (something I should have realized a year ago, lol).

There was never an A17 chip. There is A16 and A18 (and A17 Pro). But no A17.

Can the A17 Pro really be a “Pro” if there was never an A17 (Normal)? 😂

What’s going to be the difference between the SE and the 16?
- Dynamic Island vs Notch
- Brighter Display in iPhone 16
- M14 OLED Material vs M12 OLED Material
- Dual Rear Camera vs Single Rear Camera (Possibly no 2X Sensor Crop)
- Ceramic Shield 2.0 vs Ceramic Shield/No Ceramic Shield at all
- U2 Chip vs U1 Chip (UWB) (Possibly)
- A18 vs A18 Binned (Possibly One Disabled GPU Core or Underclocked across the board)
- Slightly bigger battery in iPhone 16
- Upto 40W PD vs Upto 20W PD Wired Charging
- Qi2 vs Qi (Gen 1) Wireless Charging (Possibly)
- No MMWave Module (Apple's 1st Gen 5G Modem is rumored to support only Sub-6 5G Module)
- No Satellite Comunication Module
- No Camera Controls (New Haptic Button)

Possibility of color-infused rear glass panel is low but can't be ruled out at this point, since it makes sense for Apple for multiple reasons.

Edit:
Addendum- They'll most likely put several artifical restrictions like No Night Mode etc. in the software side of things and some stupid omissions to make the iPhone 16 look better to justify its price. :/

You guys all hammering for the Mini didn’t actually buy it. That’s why Apple stopped production of the 13 Mini halfway through the year. Apple doesn’t listen to y’all anymore. Find something else to moan about.
Except it's likely the opposite. Everyone here complaining did actually buy it.

Unfortunately, not very many people outside of here bought it.

Here are some other possible omissions in the 2025 iPhone SE:
  • satellite communications
  • Ultra Wideband
  • mmWave
  • MagSafe wireless charging
  • more than 3 (2?) colors
  • more than 256GB flash storage (but 128GB seems likely as the base)
  • Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)
  • an included USB-C cable (except where legally required)
I think it's also possible the 2025 iPhone SE could include a slightly cut down ("parts binned") A18 processor with a 4-core GPU and/or 14-core Neural Engine.

I wonder whether the iPhone 16's battery design improvements will make it to the 2025 iPhone SE. Apple probably wouldn't mind the higher cost battery for some recurring revenue.😐

Will the 2025 iPhone SE necessarily have Face ID? Maybe iPad-style Touch ID (on a side button) is an option?
The last 2 SE models have Magsafe charging so they won't remove that. 3 colours are standard for SE's - a variation of Black/White/Red. They've also always used the chip used in the current normal iPhone model, so I doubt they'd hobble it (especially as they want it to work with Apple intelligence)

May I ask what action you programmed?
Flashlight mainly. I know a flashlight shortcut is on the screen, but it's more convenient to feel the button and push it without having to look at the screen. I use my phone as a flashlight multiple times per day, although generally just for brief times to check something out.

The button is certainly not lifechanging but it is a button I use regularly. Before I'd just ignore the toggle switch because I keep my phone in silent mode 99% of the time so for me it was a wasted switch.

If I didn't have the 16 Pro, I'd probably use it as a camera button. Since there is the very useful (to me) Camera Control button, it opens up the action button to other functions.

I set it as the flashlight for a while and am now trying out different functions to see what I use the most; I currently have it set to a ChatGPT voice chat. I don't think I'll keep that for very long, but I like trying new things.

I don't understand the mini fetishism; they appear on every single thread. Only 3 people on the internet bought one, and Apple has since halted production. If there was any significant sales, Tim Apple would definitely continue it.

If the specifications are accurate, this would be a far better purchase compared to the iPhone 16 Pro, at just 30% of the price.
I'm one of the 3 ;), I was going to upgrade to 16, might wait it out for the next SE version.

There has to be a way they're gimping this phone to make it undesirable because so far, it sounds like the phone everyone should buy. All the features people want/need for way less than the bloated iPhone 16 series. I wonder if it will still have a physical SIM tray like the current SE...
I can see how Apple would still do that. By the time the SE releases in spring, the 16 series will already have sold most of what it's going to sell (contract extensions aside). After the SE launches, people waiting for a cheaper phone - likely to upgrade from an older device like the iPhone SE 2/3 or iPhone 11, X etc. - will find great value in the SE. It'll be very close to an iPhone 16, but a couple of months later the iPhone 17 will have more obvious differentiating factors like a 120 Hz display.

I have my doubts that Apple will risk cannibalizing the recently launched iPhone16 with a much more economically attractive phone just for Apple Intelligence reasons. Pairing the A18 with only 6 GB of RAM doesn't make any sense as the power of the NPU would kind of go to waste because Apple Intelligence requires at least 8 GB. It's either A18 + 8 GB or it's A16 or older + 6 GB. They won't pair the A18 with less RAM.
