I went to a website where some person bragged that their friend got the iPhone on his blackberry. Would you believe they EVERY single respondent got excited that they too could, and I quote, "get a $600 phone for free." OMG! :(

So I shared links to YouTube videos of this amazing technology to show them it's been done, and that it's simply a semi-functional Home page graphic (programmed buttons). The buttons lead to the same Trero, Windows Mobile Smartphone or BB functionality.

The digital divide is so sad, seriously. The iPhone is not a likely issue to spark a societal rant, but for people in demographics who cannot afford it to seriously think they are going to get one by getting this hack is so pitiful. They are ill-informed about what an iPhone is, and you can probably sell them a bridge. Crap, maybe I'll sell the iPhone (emulation) for $50 each and profit (not).

I think you should buy a large batch of those cardboard cutouts of iPhones that were selling on eBay for the last few months and then tape them over their cell phones and charge $75 a piece.

I wouldn't even consider using any other "smartphone" sheerly based on the fact they are so gosh dang ugly and clunky and chunky looking! BLECCHH!!

Call me superficial :p

Not really... The new Blackberry Curve is very nice. My co worker got one and I was just amazed at how small it actually is. I put my iPhone ontop of his Curve and the iPhone was actually bigger. I was shocked. Id still take the iPhone over the Curve anyday but Im surprised at how nice the phone is.

Re: Are People Really THIS Stupid? Seriously.

Those are the smart ones, wait til you see the dumb ones. And see how far the US education system has really sunk.

I thought it was a joke when a friend said that he needed to teach people how to use a 4-function calculator, and these were the people taking classes to work as industry techs.

are you guys too blind to see the point of the iphone skin on other devices?

its called CUSTOMIZATION, yes, you can change the home screen background on ANY other device yet for $600 you cant on an iphone unless you start modifying system files and most likely voiding your warranty with apple?

he can make his phone ring like the iphone too and have the same interface, can your iphone look like any other phone? can you even change your icons? can do you do anything other than change the picture for your locked screen?

can you make your iphone look like this?

how many smartphone's and pda phones have you seen? 3? 4? out of the 400+ avalible? i think you've been brainwashed by apple to only like the look of apple products

i give props to making a great UI, its clean and well organized, but who in their right mind leaves out the removeable battery on a device that will be heavily used because of the features it offers? the iphone is way too locked down and restrictive, why do you have to upgrade your OS from 10.3 to 10.4 in order to have your CELL PHONE activated? cell phone << >> computer WTF?

people like the UI even if they hate apple, they use other devices that are no locked down at all and have the great looks of the apple icons on their device and spend 1/5th of the price. IMO thats smart, you get the best of both worlds. the iphone has more shortcommings than offerings, and anyone that has sat down and looked at the specs and played around with the device will tell you that.

BTW if you havent used TCPMP i wouldnt knock it, that program can play almost any format known to man kind. Xvid, Divx, AAC, h264, mpeg.x, flac, ogg, etc, etc

if my iphone looked like that pic i would have returned it IMMEDIATELY.

save ugly for ugly dog contests. not for something as nice as the iphone.

I think the point you're missing is that the iPhone is designed so well, it doesn't need customization.

There's a reason people are clamoring to make their Windows Mobile devices look and work like an iPhone, and not the other way around. The simple fact of the matter is that Windows Mobile (and PalmOS and Symbian, to varying degrees) need customizations to be truly useful.

I can't speak for others, but in the past year (yes, year), I've had a Treo 650, 680, 750, Samsung BlackJack, HTC 8125, and a BlackBerry Pearl.

The form factor of a phone doesn't change the underlying OS substantially.

i give props to making a great UI, its clean and well organized, but who in their right mind leaves out the removeable battery on a device that will be heavily used because of the features it offers?
Considering Cingular and Sprint charge $79 for a replacement battery for a Treo, I fail to see your point. Yes, you can buy a battery from Amazon (or eBay) for much less, but be realistic. A replaceable battery would equate to a larger device, or (like the BlackJack) a smaller physical battery with less life. If you can swing $600 for a phone, $85 for a new battery shouldn't be a problem every two years.

You say that as though Windows Mobile is substantially different. Mobile Device Center is Vista-only, and ActiveSync 4.5 is a buggy piece of trash, just like every previous iteration.

BTW if you havent used TCPMP i wouldnt knock it, that program can play almost any format known to man kind. Xvid, Divx, AAC, h264, mpeg.x, flac, ogg, etc, etc
I've used it on PalmOS and Windows Mobile, and it's just short of terrible (at least, when it isn't crashing altogether).

Having the ability to do something, and actually doing something well are two completely different things. Suggesting that TCPMP as a media player is somehow better than the iPhone's functionality is kind of like hitching a trailer to a Honda Civic and saying it's better than a dump truck.

Well no, I can't make my iPhone look like that, but then I also don't need to use opera. Hell I had LauncherX on my 700p, which I loved because it took the "It Came from the 80's" look into the early 90's.

And being able to activate my phone at home was a big plus. At least I could relax rather than be distracted by all the bobbles in the store as I stood waiting for activation.

Oh no, becuase none of the wireless operators in the US have forced the phone makers to turn off features built into the phone in favor of their own subscription services.

I have used TCPMP, and it is great for the Palm. Which is all I need to say about it.

You really don't get it do you?

When you go out to a fine restaurant do you tell the chef what ingredients to use? How to combine them? How long to cook them and how to arrange the final creations on the plate?

Maybe you would.

There are those of us who actually like it just the way it is. It's not a sign of mass delusion of manipulation or naivety to love the interface and layout and features just the way they are.

I personally think it's on par with a work of art. And I'm sure others feel the same way.

If that's not good enough for you fine, but one day you may learn to understand that sitting back and enjoying a nice meal prepared by an artist is preferable to acting on every last id-generated drive your mind can express.

lol you guys are trying to defend the lack of Customization in the iPhone?

Sure if you want to be the same as every other iPhone owner, no self identity, no distinctiveness.

That’s like saying, everyone should be driving the exact same car, have the same stereo, have the exact same floor plan and furniture in their house, have the same everything, as everyone else. Eat the same food everyday, wear the same clothes. At the same time losing a substantial amount of money doing it.

Sorry if I don’t think the same as everyone else, I think different, and I have personal tastes.

LMAO its so good it doesn’t need Customization? That is possible the funniest thing I’ve heard all week, Customization isn’t all about usability, it’s about personal preference. Changing the WM and Symbian devices to the iPhone skin actually decreases the functionality of the phone because WM phones have way more applications than the iPhone and the icons cant all fit on the screen, you need to tap the screen more times to open up what you want. WM phones have more functions out of the box, and are more useful as they support more markets than the iPhone. (EX: the iPhone is a horrible business phone and does not target the business market, yet the WM does as well as the same market the iPhone targets)

Oh no, because none of the wireless operators in the US have forced the phone makers to turn off features built into the phone in favor of their own subscription services.

Again, the SMART people don’t buy into contracts, they don’t buy locked phones, they buy direct from manufacture for CHEAPER. and they have month to month fees

You say that as though Windows Mobile is substantially different. Mobile Device Center is Vista-only, and ActiveSync 4.5 is a buggy piece of trash, just like every previous iteration.

Mobile Device Center? never used it, I assume its some software to sync with your PDA, PMP, phone etc. ? don’t know what it is, don’t use it because I have a choice in my sync'ing software.

im using a beta version of active sync and it hasnt been a buggy like safari or the ipod function on the iPhone. (dont think your iPhone is buggy? just look at all the complaints on THIS forum about the software crashing)

also if you dont like active sync, dont use it, there are so many alternatives out there, its only provided with a WM phone becuase MS doesnt include anyone elses software on the disc. (Alternatives? chapaura, intelisync, etc, etc) Sync software >> YOU choose what you want to use, intellisync works well actually since BB’s use it.

The form factor of a phone doesn't change the underlying OS substantially.

No but changing the OS changes the OS, ive installed 3-4 different operating systems on my phone, and I choose the one I like. Now it runs more stable than the ****** official dopod rom I had on, yeah it was actually buggy, but this is true for most official OS's, the hacked versions run much more stable and provide alot more functionality. the WM6 version I have is BlackMajik, it has yet to crash and has WAY more Cooked in apps than any official Rom that has and will ever come out. (Apple forbid I flashed my phone with Custom OS)

I guess that’s why the rest of the mobile phone world calls iPhone users sheep.

My BlackBerry Pearl is an iPhone wannabe. It uses the Marimba ringtone and has the OS X Clownfish wallpaper :p I'm waiting for iPhone v2. To each his own I say...

Or maybe some of us prefer to express our individuality in different ways than hacking our cell phone.

I don't define my distinctiveness by the modifications I make to the tech I own.

If you do, fantastic. Grats to you. Just realize that your standard is neither universally applicable nor universally accepted.

exacaly, you have the option to Customize your phone to your own liking. and when you get bored of your theme you change it to something else.

having the same theme for 2 years will get old real fast

well i guess your perfect for mac products then, no need to Customize your MBP or imac/minimac, no need to Customize your ipod (cant change start screen), no need to change the theme/look/behavior on OSX, no need to pay anything but the highest prices either.

You make some valid points but I think the above quote is missing the others' arguments a bit. They're saying (I think) that everyone should (and does) use the same sort of wheel on their car because the wheel is ... well, the wheel and does what it does better than say, the square wheel. The "iPhone as art" argument fits more with the basic design being "perfect." Like the wheel. When you get to the level of cars or stereos or whatever, you're at a higher level of complexity and, as such, different designs will provide basically the same functions. But on a basic level, there's really no beating the wheel for basic transportation (or whatever other basic machine/buliding block you chose to insert).

I think that's the gist of their argument as far as "customization" goes. I do see the validity of some of your arguments and perhaps many if not most will be addressed by SW updtaes (seems entirely plausible/possible).

...(or whatever other basic machine/buliding block you chose to insert)...

heh. just found the "insert" part funny after re-reading...:D

Actually, I do what smart people do:

I outsource those choices to companies whose products reflect what I know I like.

I make my choice when evaluating the product. That allows me to focus my energies on other things like actually using the iPhone.

This is like sticking a Chevy engine in a Ferrari, looks okay but can't perform the same functions.

Then you should make sure you don't buy a Ferrari with a Chevy engine in it.

Seriously, people who have issues with the iPhone aren't smarter they just want different things.

Live with it and get on with your life.
