Doesn insulting other countries and making vast generalizations about the people that live in those countries make you feel better about yourself? Does being a bigot make up for your lack of maturity and things to do in your life? I mean hey if making bigoted generalizations about other countries which you obviously know nothing about makes you sleep better at night and makes you happy, then keep it up.

So there you go guys, pr5owner, who is probably at home right now trying to find that perfect icon for his uber customizable phone's calculator program, is now at peace with himself because he was able to make up for his lack of a life by using ignorant stereotypes and bigotry directed towards other countries to make the simple point that he doesn't like the iPhone.

Now let me answer the phone because I'm at work since I'm actually a productive member of society ;)

At the risk of ignoring my own advice, let me just comment that there is no finer way to deal with people like this than to completely ignore them.

Seriously, without responses they wither away.

And that will be that on the topic for me, but I think it needed to be said.

Fair enough and I would agree with you but I go to the internet to escape the fact that I live in a very bigoted and hateful place and nothing annoys and disturbs me more than going online to see more of what surrounds me in the real world. Maybe what I wrote was completely unneeded but oh well.

In my book you did fine, just saying...=D

are you guys too blind to see the point of the iphone skin on other devices?

he can make his phone ring like the iphone too and have the same interface, can your iphone look like any other phone?

I can see the point of the iPhone skin on other devices.. that way you can pretend you have an iPhone while you stew in your jealousy of the iPhone.

Can I make my iPhone look like any other phone? What, you mean like make it an inch thicker, give it a small low res screen and 40 ugly little pea sized buttons?.. no I can't do that. :D

pr5owner, I have one thing to say to you about the iPhone...

"It's not what it does, but how it does it"

I think we should leave pr5owner alone now, as he obviously feels he can design software better than Apple...

Folks ...

pr5owner is an endless black hole of iPhone envy/hatred, that will never ever stop talking ... he's been at it forever over on Howard Forums and eventually got himself banned (example message here - http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9458323&postcount=26 - note the "Banned" tag), so obviously feels a continued need to vent elsewhere and is coming over to MacRumors to do so ...

Best to just ignore him, although I doubt he'll actually go away.

lol i was temp banned for circumventing the sware filter in the symbian forum, apparently "ass" is a sware

yeah i am too, how does that change the fact that i disagree with the op's statement, ive provided examples of why his statement is wrong, if you disagree with me, provide proof that it is STUPID to customize your phone.. also i have my phone the way i like it thanks, i can switch my icons to somethign else with a couple taps. it appears you can do it with the iphone now too

actually i dont have the iphone skin running, although i have it somewhere in an archive file. the point of the iphone skin is to show people that you can change the interface on a S60/WM phone to what you LIKE. its not that they are trying to pretend to be an iphone cuz they obviously are NOT. its to illustrate the power of customization.

also my phone's DPI is approx the same as the iphone, the iphone (gross exageration) is double the size as well as double the resolution, if you halve that, you still have the same DPI, which equates to the same clarity

Sure as soon as your provide me with proof that red is a better color than blue.

im sure you put alot of thought into your statement but you have yet to provide any proof on your own

All of which is just a blah-blah lead-in to one of my favorite set of icons so far. (I think the Tardis is cool):

theres no sonic screw driver!

can you make your iphone look like this?

Screen001-1.jpg

No... but why would anyone in their right mind want to? That's beyond ugly.

again if you bothered to read anything, its the fact that i CAN customize my phone (and most S60 and WM phones can do this out of the box), i can move buttons around, i can change the way things look. its not the fact that i have a specific theme (bluOrb) i dont even have that running anymore after i flashed to WM6, its just an example.

apparently now you can hack the iphone to change the icons and background which is great, but apple should of included that ability from the start. (i can almost guarentee that flashing the phone with non approved files will end your warranty, ending your warranty on a first gen device usually isnt a good idea)

Sadly the majority of iPod and iPhone users are people who know nothing about computers :( Of course they would think the fake iPhone is cool.

The Blackjack is okay, and it doesn't cost a bomb.

yeah its $75 in the US or its free over seas. (the N95, HTC TyTN, X7500, basically all pda phones are FREE on an 18mo contract in the UK)

anyways @Daiden

my pda looks like this after i upgraded to wm6, havent really customized it except the background for the slider

Once the delivery method has been proven stable I'll customize the look of my home screen. Heck, I keep Panther on my transparent iBook because I was able to customize the System Pref icons, and I like the way I have it set up. I'm just going to let everyone else risk bricking their phones until its proven stable.

it is stable,

its not *too* much work, but its somewhat anoying compared to other phones

As much fun as it is to argue back and forth on the customization topic, I think the answer as to why Apple keeps the system closed is really a simple one, especially if you know some history of Apple. Read up on some really good stories of the early apple (and Steve Jobs) at folklore.org.

Anyway, Apple keeps systems like this closed because they spend a lot of time and money on UI design - working towards making a piece of software as functional as possible. Sometimes they fail, but more often than not, they nail it. In the case of something as specific as the iPhone, the phone would fail if they didn't nail multitouch. How do you make sure it doesn't fail? That's easy - you limit the UI to predetermined standards. You don't let users put on their own wallpaper (maintain a nice strong contrast between the buttons and the background), you don't let them move buttons around (so they always know where to find something), and you keep things in (what you hope is) the most logical place.

Opening up the UI before the phone is proven would kill any chance the iPhone had at widespread success - because a lot of people would change their setup to something that really isn't as user-friendly (though certainly more personalized). And that's not what Apple needs right now. But as we've seen with the AppleTV, the tools will become available for people who want these things (and will have enough common sense to make the changes appropriately), and the system will slowly become open.

But never by default.

And for some fun reading:

We all gathered around as Chris showed the calculator to Steve and then held his breath, waiting for Steve's reaction. "Well, it's a start", Steve said, "but basically, it stinks. The background color is too dark, some lines are the wrong thickness, and the buttons are too big." Chris told Steve he'll keep changing it, until Steve thought he got it right.

Alright....you win. Your phone is SO great. I really really wish my phone could do that! If only I could have bought a phone for the price of the iPhone, that does all that your phone does

People with WM phones

I find it funny how people are bragging about their Windows Mobile phone here. Now tell me how easy is it to sync that phone with a Mac ? ;)

I'm certainly not trying to pick a fight here, but I think these show exactly why the iPhone UI is closed from Apple. Who needs to know what MHZ their phone is operating at, or the temperature of their battery (I'm assuming based on your location that a) the temp is in celcius, and b) it's not that hot outside - I could be wrong), or the current being drawn from the battery, or what's going on with their ram usage?

Add into the mix that all of the important information about signal strength, battery life, etc. are also at the top of the screen...

Anyway, what I'm driving towards here is that this reminds me of early MP3 players - they showed all sorts of information that the (normal, not really nerdy or geeky) end user didn't care about. You couldn't see the title of a song, but you could see the bitrate of it (seriously). Navigation sucked, as did the UI, but people put up with it until something better came along. And when it did, it took the market by storm, because it's what people had been waiting for - a UI that made sense.

Liking that particular UI or system doesn't make people sheep, it means that they actually like it. It's possible, after all, for people to like something that you don't, in much the same way that you prefer your WM6 phone to the iPhone. You're not a sheep for 'taking what they give you' (or whatever it is you do with your phone), nor are the people who appreciate the UI design and system integration of the iPhone.

Different strokes, for different folks...

thanks, that what i was waiting for, the "REAL" reason why apple is so stingy on their products, i knew someone in a mac forum would have an answer instead of rediculous comments

Honestly, I can't say I'm that bothered by the current lack of customization on the iPhone (although I'm certainly hoping that eventually it does become more like OS X, with more third party stuff, maybe ShapeShifter like themes, etc.).

Frankly, I'd easily give up all the customization and third party app functionality I have on my Treo 650 right now to get what the iPhone offers.

Yes, it's great I can install all sorts of funky apps on my Treo, or use a custom launcher program..... but frankly, once the novelty of that wore off, I barely use those other functions. The main things I use my Treo 650 for are calling, e-mail and web browsing..... and frankly, my Treo is really inferior in those regards - especially the web browsing side.

And it's not like I could get something much better by upgrading to a new device; I've tried web browsing with Pocket IE on a Treo 750w, for example; yes, it's great the Treo 750w has 3G, but what's the point if it still renders web pages in big long lists that are a pain to navigate through.

So yeah, it's cool to be able to customize and add custom themes and so forth, but the iPhone UI as I've played around with it is already really nice -it's not like the Treo where the default app launcher is so hideous you want a custom launcher/themes/etc.

Very easy

I find it funny how people are bragging about their Windows Mobile phone here. Now tell me how easy is it to sync that phone with a Mac ? ;)

I had to buy third-party software to do it, but it was well worth it. Apple was definitely NOT trying to make it any easier to make the two work together--probably because they had their own ideas (viz. iPhone).

This thread is weird, but can be solved by two statements:

1. People who expect/require unlimited mobile phone software customizability shouldn't consider an iPhone.

2. People who want a phone that's pretty and easy to use with fun features should consider an iPhone.
