And i don't really reply to users after i started a thread anyway..

Not a fad. But the smartphone is going to be the only ubiquitous computing device. Everything else will only be desired and used by subsets of the population.

I was reading an article the other day that basically said this.

Tablets are luxury products that are bought and used by those in the developed world. Those in the developing world won't see the value in a tablet when there are capable smartphones and laptops that can do just as much and more than a tablet.

Maybe they are a niche product but I find mine very useful and are part of my daily set up.

You should. A discussion is a two way streak and without the OP of a thread being involved most threads end up junked or waste landed as it is impossible to know if the person actually cares. So even if you don't have a huge amount extra to say - a reply every now and again even if its just to say 'thanks for the comments' at least keeps a thread / discussion alive ;)

I don't think that tablets are a fad, however, most people realize they don't need to upgrade every year. They buy a tablet and use it until it doesn't meet their needs any more.

Dual Screen phones have already existed and already attempted to bridge this gap, and they failed miserably.

Remember the Kyocera Echo?

It seems you do not really see what foldable screen means. I did not mean multiple screens

Tablets are here to stay. They have replaced netbooks.

They are met to be secondary devices. Never a laptop/desktop replacement. Never a complete cellular solution for voice.

Where they will excel is the personal consumption side.

1. TV/movie personal viewing
2. Casual internet usage
3. Email
4. Books/education

I have had a 5.5 inch Note 2. Those big phones cannot replace my 9.7 inch ipad. I returned the 7.9 inch iPad mini as well.

I know half a dozen people who have replaced their laptop/desktop with an iPad completely (as in they no longer have another computer) and a lot who have both but utilise the laptop less and less.

If your not working with a computer (as in your work requires a computer/specific software) a tablet can indeed be a replacement.

I thought that a Note 3 would solve my need for a bigger phone than iPhone 5s and remove the need for my iPad rMini. But boy, was I wrong.

My thoughts were like this:

The problem with a phone plus tablet combination is that when you get a message or call on your phone, then you have to lay down your tablet. Also, other notifications show up on both devices, which can be annoying.
The above was reversed in practical use. I found that i would rather not be disturbed when watching something on my tablet. It is actually nice that no one is calling on it and that messages do not pop up. The phone is a better second screen experience than a phablet alone. Also, the battery advantage is huge from having seperate devices.

Instead, I deleted facebook, fb messenger and twitter among other things on my iPhone. I got stressed from all the notifications and want to keep my phone for important things and music listening. I then use ny rMini for those things, but only when I log on and want it.

My tablet is a better device for reading and consuming content. The phablet was a very bad phone and a very bad tablet. It was also a very good in between, but I found that a notification/call hell in between was exactly what I did not want. Especially when the screen is so small compared to even a rMini iPad.

I do the same thing. All of my social media is on my tablet and I have very little on my actual phone.

When i first got the original galaxy note I thought that it would be an all in one device. It's good as a phone but too small to be a tablet. I've tried Smaller phones since then (iPhone 5S, Galaxy S4) but I found them too small. I've now got the note 3, which is great as a phone. I also have an ipad mini, air and Asus Hd7.

I don't care too much for tablets, but it isn't a fad. The market just became saturated for them. It isn't like the portable media player industry which shrunk after smartphones can do pretty much everything they can do. Tablets will stay around even longer than iPods just because it is more complimentary to smartphones and notebooks/laptops. Portable mp3 players were more overkill if you carry a smartphone around. That was more disposable gadgets.

I find it very interesting the new Samsung Tab 4 is cheaper than the Tab 3. Food for thought as far as I am concerned. And it sure seems the 7 inchers will not be around too much longer.

I recently discovered that I don't need a laptop or pc at home. At work I have a company laptop and when ever I need to do anything a tablet can't handle, I just take the company laptop home (very rare occasions).

Sorry but considering the downfall and the massive mistakes they have made, quoting or thinking that the Blackberry's CEO is right about hardware trends is seriously an error in judgment.

Obviously you don't know that BlackBerry has hired an outsider with serious rescue credentials as their new CEO who has nothing to do with the situation the company finds itself in and has been handling the situation pretty well in his first few months on the job.

Yeah .. ok get back to me when they finally have a product that anyone actually cares about and where there market share mangages to climb out of the abyss t currently lurks in ...

And no I don't hate blackberry, I had a Playbook/Bold 9900/Z10....... But for the OP to use them 'quote them' as some beacon of wise business philosophy when their market share has just tanked was utterly misplaced.

Does the writer of the article not understand economics?

Did he expect the sales figures from when everyone was rushing out to buy tablets to continue? Why would people continue the rush for a tablet when they already have one?

Not every single person is going to upgrade to the latest shiny every year.

Cannot we say the same for the latest smartphones? They sell in droves so I guess many people like the latest shiny. :D

I kept the Nexus 10 for 2 years happily, I kept my first iPad for 2 years. I bought nearly every iPhone religiously, when I moved to Android I upgraded on average every 6 months before being happy with my Note 3. Time will tell how long I keep this :D

I agree with Shanghaichica, Smartphones are seen as a necessity nowadays, Tablets are seen strictly as luxury.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
My Nexus 7 was a present, my mum saved up for it bless her. And I intend to keep it for a very long time, and a plus is as it's a Nexus 7 2012 I can pop the back off without too much effort and replace the battery.

I may get a new tablet one day, but I will still keep my Nexus 7. In fact I am very happy with my tablet and my Nexus 5 phone, they are both great and perform very well. Not sure what anything else will bring thats better? More power and higher res screens is about it, if that's what you need which I don't.

But I think tablets are not changed as much because they are presents so have sentimental attachment, and because they mostly do what you want them too, no need to update, they browse the web, email, play videos and stream media, play games.

Totally agree. That's why I think tablets are here to stay. The experience between a 5.5 and 7.9 inch screen is significantly different. I find phablets to be in this tweener area where they don't work well as a phone or as a tablet.

I really hope 8inch tablets still be around for a long time yet.

Did you know the Samsung Galaxy is reportly making a "7 inch" Galaxy Mega smartphone.

I have to say that is too big for a smartphone...

Who would want a 8inch phablet anyway? because it is too big to be a phone and you look stupid when you are on a phone call with it in public.

And i think phablets are fads.

By the way what is a niche product??
