Just comparing the Sound m4 13, m4 11 and M1 Pro 2021.
Best: m4 13, best volume, Most Natural, Best Bass and Mids.

The M1 Sems to be Clearer, more hights but less Bass,

The M4-11 Sounds Similar to the the 13 but with a Little Bit less volume and Bass.

But for me more Natural than the M1. May be for Techno the better Choice.
For Movies i would Go for the m4.

I would Never Go with the older Modell because of the Sound.
But i would also Not Upgrade for soundreasons, too, an iPad will Never be a hifi device.

But I Like the Body and Display of the 2024 Models much more.

So you do know how bad they are then.
I have Sonos speakers don’t want a bt speaker for a iPad, don’t need it with my M1 11” will be sticking with it, Apple saved me a bucket load lol.
If you don't think your 11" could benefit from a BT speaker, you probably don't need that Sonos setup either.

Indeed. But apparently that person read all the posts mentioning speakers AND headphones and missed that word each time.
Use my iPad daily with and without headphones (which fit in my pocket). I can't see a scenario where I'd be carrying a speaker with it...

I’m not pairing my iPad to my Bose speaker every time I want to use it. I’m also never using headphones or my AirPods Pro 2 with it unless I’m on a plane or traveling. I like to be aware of my surroundings while at home.

Well why would you do that? The suggestion of a speaker was more static use.

Then that’s your choice.

Something seems to be lost in translation in this thread. Whether the speakers are worse than past versions is beside the point - if any user finds them unacceptable then they have 3 options:

- swap it for an older model
- suck it up
- bypass the speakers by using an external one and/or headphones

I’m not telling anyone what they should do. But there are options and anyone who chooses to use the internal speakers despite finding them inferior is, ultimately, choosing to do so.

Doing just that. Got the M2 Pro from Best Buy today for $599 and will be returning the M4 to Costco. I’ll see what Apple does either next generation or the one after.

You only have to pair it once; after that it will automatically connect whenever you turn the speaker on. At least thats how my old UE Boom and now JBL Flip work.

I have had my M4 23” for a couple of weeks now and think the sound is slightly worse than my M1 12.9” was. To my ears, neither are great but good enough for casual listening for something like a YouTube video. I have a pair of 8” studio monitors hooked up to an audio interface that I use at my desk at home when sound is important to me.

Just replaced my IPP 11” 2018 with an 11” M4, I wouldn't say the sound is terrible, but it does seem to lack a certain depth to it. Won’t affect me much, the few games I do play sound okay and for Teams meetings I don’t hear much difference.

I do love my M4, but my M1's speakers sounded better if I chose to watch a movie. The M1 IMHO had a richer sound. To be fair, as I've already commented I'd rather use headphones with the iPad M4 anyway. And I did pick up some AirPods Pro 2 for travel. For trips via airlines I do lug along my Master & Dynamic MW75 over the ear headphones.
