Thought to post an update on my prior questions/issues on this thread. I finally got to fix my CPU B temp delta which,
as a reminder, was about 10-12 degrees at idle. My CPU A temp delta was ok. Here's what I did:
1- I tried to tighten a bit the CPU B HeatSink. That did not work out unfortunately. I assumed I had done a poor paste job for CPU B when upgrading.
2- I then went about the (yes nerve-racking) process of removing the HeatSink on the 4,1 in order to re-paste (delidded) CPU B.
3- For the prior paste job I had used Artic-MX4 and was about to use it again, but at last minute decided to try instead the
IC Graphite Thermal Pads I had mentioned earlier in this thread.
4- Got worry about a warning on the packaging that states "IC Graphite is electrically conductive! etc etc etc". The pad size is 30mmx30mm and it would have covered all capacitors on top of the delidded CPU. I am no expert, but I assumed that it was too risky and therefore ended up cutting a smaller piece of the pad, only keeping a 2mm excess around the perimeter of the top metal element.
5- Graphite we know is very light, and keeping it place was not easy. I assumed its texture was going to be somewhat sticky, but no, it is quite brittle and dry -- think of a very thin cracker that flies around with minimal air pressure! ?
6- I crossed my fingers and hoped it would stay in place while slowly screwing back the HeatSink.
Happy with the results so far! The Graphite Pad has given consistent CPU B temp delta of 2-4 Celsius at idle. And what I think (but I am not sure) is important -- CPU B is now cooler than CPU A. It was the opposite before. The 2 attached images show iStat Menu temperature history for both CPU B Tdiode and CPU B HeatSInk. I made some image edits to clearly show the changes I made to the fan settings during the testing period. Let me know your thoughts on the resulting CPU temps. Thanks again for your help!
PS: I think that for newbies, the pad offers less variables to worry about, such as not having to worry about the proper amount of paste to apply and such. And it's less messy in general. It is also reusable which is a plus. But it's definitely more expensive than the paste option!
