Thought the thread was about how much you used the iPad per day :) . Buying addiction - not so much 3 and v2 12.9. The longelivity is impressive but Civ VI is actually pushing the hardware.

I’m surprised people still have the 3. That was my bogey device. Horrible performance due to the retina screen and no CPU increase to compensate, and then they did a short cycle to the next device so it was tricky to upgrade so soon

So an odd topic but I’m curious if anyone else here is kind of as crazy as me with buying/owning multiple iPads...
I own/owned at one point...
The iPad 9.7” (2010)
The iPad 2, 9.7” (2011)
The iPad 4, 9.7” (2012)
iPad Air 9.7” (2013)
iPad Mini 2, 7.9” (2013)
iPad Air 2, 9.7” (2014)
iPad Mini 4, 7.9” (2015)
iPad Pro 12.9” (2015)
iPad Pro 1.5, 9.7” (2016)
iPad Pro 2, 12.9”. (2017)
The iPad 5, 9.7” (2017)
iPad Pro 10.5” (2017)
The iPad 6, 9.7” (2018)

I had many of those at once but sold them to pay for newer gens. For about 2 years I stuck with...
The iPad 9.7” (2010)
iPad Mini 4, 7.9” (2015)
iPad Pro 12.9” (2017)
iPad Pro 9.7” (2016)

I didn’t need more than one obviously, but I bought so many because I had a problem... lol.
Plus, I got them on good sales and thought I’d have ones to use on the go while others stayed home. But since most didn’t have the power like the Pro, I never took them anywhere. I couldn’t justify the ones without pencil support, so I sold all and got...

iPad Pro 10.5” (2017) *for home.
The iPad 6, 9.7” (2018) *for on the go.

***Again this is an odd topic, but I’m just curious how everyone else deals with or buys iPads. Lol

Kallum.

Reading your post,I am not questioning anymore...

Why are you downsizing to the non pro 9.7”? Or do you mean you’ll be getting the next pro when it comes out this year?
You were correct with your first thought. I'm planning on downsizing my from 12.9 iPad Pro to the 2018 iPad. I could go into great detail as to the reasons, but in a nutshell, after 2+ years of pushing to use the Pro as my primary mobile device as an alternative to my macbook air (with great success in many areas), I see that Apple isn't interested in moving the iPad beyond where it is for the foreseeable future.

For THAT, I don't need the 12.9 Pro. I can do nearly all of those things with the 2018 iPad and Pencil. (the benefits of full UI in split-window mode has not fully materialized since there are still quite a few apps that I use that don't support split-window)

When I had the 3, I never thought there was any kind of “horrible performance”. In fact, I was so satisfied with it, I didn’t see the need to upgrade until the Air came out (and even then it was more because it was thinner and lighter with reduced bezels).

I never had any issues with the 3 either... however, when I bought it, I was told I was getting an iPad 4, as they had just released them and that's what I asked for. It was my first and only iPad until the iPP 12.9 I bought in November. I didn't know it wasn't an iPad 4 because I am the only person in my circle that Apples at all. The rest are cheap asses and will settle for anything due to price. performance be damned, so My iPad was still smoking all of their tools and it wasn't what I thought it was at all. I think I only found out it was a 3 last year, when I saw a thread about iPads discussing year and models... so I looked it up and found it was the 36 pin 3, where the 4 was a lightning connector. Again I had no idea as I never had any reason to question the purchase. Since the days of my first iPad purchase I have learned much about apple and things to look for and feel like I'm making better decisions related to my needs and all is good.

As an aside... when I first stepped into tablets I bought an Asus Transformer (don't remember the model number) with the keyboard as a separate purchase, all at once I paid about 700 for the set. The coolest feature with that set up, was that the keyboard had a huge battery in it as well, and with the two connected I could run 2 days without connecting the charger. I mean 2 days of constant playing games and letting the grand kids do artwork and games... What I didn't like about the Android was what I still don't like about the androids... Every damn app has a different menu set up and most are half way intuitive while being annoying in the part where they aren't always intuitive. It was pervasive at the time, I traded it for the iPad3 and was never again annoyed by menus and layouts being so intuitively counterintuitive.

It might have changed since a couple of years ago now, but all the people who are dying to customize their phones and tablets so much they are not "share able" is a phenomenon I don't grasp. I can almost understand wanting to make it so personal for security reasons, but the rest of all the reasons are all things that are annoying if you want to show someone something with your phone and they may have to navigate something... and all of a sudden they have to almost learn a new language to understand how your damn phone/tablet is set up... just to get through your crap... The iPad/phone stuff is so much more intuitive and leaves little room for navigation issues like that. Facts is... I don't want to look at anyone else phone or tablet anyway, as I DO have my own everything and if someone wants to share something with me they can, by sending me links and such or even texts and pictures direct if apple...

Unless Apple just falls completely off the consumer experience wagon, I'll pretty easily say a loyal Apple guy until I can't afford it any longer... which I assume could happen to anyone at any time as well.

I’ve been through 5 upgrades since 2012 and generally just keep the current one. Still happy with gen1 Pro now.

To the OP, I recommend helping non-techie family or colleagues with upgrading. It helps fill the time while we wait for the next revision. I mean, one new iPad release a year is hardly enough to satisfy an addict. ;-)

iPad (2010)
iPad 2 (2011)
iPad 3 (2012)
iPad Mini (2013)
iPad Mini 2 x2 (2014, 2015)
iPad Air 2 (2016)

Contemplating a 2018 for wife but the Air 2 will do me for several years. We gave the older models away to family.

I have had them all from Gen 1.
Currently have a 2017 12.9. Wife has 10.5 pro.
About to try a new 9.7, all wifi and cellular.

I just bought a 2nd gen 12.9 almost on a whim because they’re £200 cheaper here on holiday than back at home in the UK. Still have my 10.5... figure if I do t get on with the 12.9 I can pass it on at cost

Not much for me!

iPad 1
iPad 2
iPad Air 2
iPad Pro 12.9

iPad 2 lasted forever! Got it when it came out and it lasted until iPad Air 2 came out. The latest iOS made it so slow I upgraded out of frustration.

I’ve always loved my iPad, my most used appple device.

iPad 2
iPad 4
iPad Air 1
iPad Air 2
iPad Pro 9.7
iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd Gen)

First of all, yes I think you have a problem.

Secondly, I don't understand why you need the 10.5 pro for home and 9.7 (2018) for on the go? They are virtually identical in physical dimensions so it's not like you're saving much in travel space. I would think it would be much easier to simply use the same device. Is it a charging concern (i.e. always keep your "on the go" iPad charged up and at the ready while home)?

For the record here is my (metaphorical) iPad drawer

iPad 2
iPad 3 (given by the MBA program I entered, otherwise I never would have gotten it)
iPad mini 2
iPad Pro 9.7

The iPad 2, 3 were gifted to my gf and mom (who still use them) and I sold my mini 2 when I was buying the Pro 9.7

Let’s keep the topic off targeting and saying negative things about people, the goal of this thread was not to call people out and label them weirdos or that they have a problem... it was meant as a soft-hearted topic to see if anyone was as big an iPad fan as I am. I know plenty of people who buy hundreds of high end watches, toys, toy cars, dozens of real cars, Jewelry, shot-glasses, etc... and it’s just what they like, it’s only a problem if it impacts your life negatively, but that’s not your’s or anyone’s business but that person. ;)
But the reasoning I have for owning them is that I use the 10.5” as a home computer as it was not as cheap as the 9.7” and I use the 9.7” for out in the world since it was hundreds of dollars less.

You know, I think I could go to the 2018 pad myself if I wouldn’t lose my ASK. I’ve been thinking a lot about it because I had already considered going to the 10.5, but dang - lots cheaper to just go with the 2018, and so much portability.

I hear ya on that. Over the last few days I've been using my old Air 2 w/Belkin QODE ultra-thin keyboard case. Wow, that is cramped in comparison to the 12.9 ASK. But I forgot how good that keyboard was overall. Dedicated iPad-specific keys, 2 angle positions, instant/automatic-on, and strong magnets that keep it securely closed. It's funny. For 6 months (before getting the 12.9 Pro) I used that keyboard daily and didn't have any problems. I'm hoping that after a short amount of time, I'll get re-acclimated to it.

I have thought about just having a stand and a keyboard and then a much more portable device. I just don’t know if I could love another keyboard as much as the ASK.

You probably can't. The ASK is still my all-time favorite keyboard. I'm also testing the Air 2 with only a smart cover and using the Logitech K380 keyboard. That allows me to keep that keyboard at my office desk at work and just transport the iPad.

Not really. Only upgrade when I think it’s necessary.

iPad 2 (64 GB) paid $700 - Traded in for money towards the Air.
iPad Air (32 GB) paid $600 - Traded in for money towards the Pro
iPad Pro 10.5 (64 GB) paid $650 - still have it of course!

I put what I paid because I think for the value the iPad Pro has the others beat in terms of overall features which is cool.

Have had quite a few!

iPad
"New" iPad Retina (3)
iPad Mini
iPad Mini 2 Retina
iPad Air
iPad Air 2

I keep selling them because I prefer using the MBP for most things, though I admit I am tempted by the 2018 iPad.

Quite shocking to sit and think of how money we've shelled out to apple the last few years lol

I purchased every iphone since launch except the standard 8 and the iPhone x

Ipad
Ipad 2
Ipad 4
Ipad mini 1 and 2
Ipad air 1 and 2
Ipad pro 12.9 2017
Ipad 2017
