I haven't needed AppleCare since my original iPhone developed a bubble under the screen 22 months after purchase. I stopped buying it for iDevices a long time ago. The widespread issues and various "gates" you hear about are always overblown. Even so, they always occur right from launch. As such AppleCare doesn't really gain you anything in those cases.

With Macs I think its a different story, since there are more ways for things to go wrong. There have been several instances of graphics cards and screens going bad once the original warranty expires. Even then, if it's wide-spread enough Apple will offer free repairs for specific issues out of warranty. I once had the GPU replaced for free on my original Intel Core Duo iMac almost 10 years after I bought it due to a known issue that was covered.

You can now buy AppleCare+ for Macs! https://www.apple.com/support/products/mac.html

I'm so happy - accidental damage is also covered now for Macs.

Yup, purchased with iPP. I am not worrying about my iPP or iP7+ and buying AppleCare helps brush that worry under the table.

I had three years of meh to bad products and service with Apple culminating with iPhone clusters last Fall. Then I emailed Tim Cook in December and let him know how much hurt this 20+ year Apple user was going through. Since this year, it's smooth sailing: products that work and great customer service.

I think Apple are learning from last year's constant negative criticisms, the uptick in issues, and most importantly, the hit these things bring to their bottom line.

I always purchased AC except for the one refurb iMac I bought which was a lemon. The few times I have had to use AC, Apple always came through and for the peace of mind it brings, I will continue to buy it.

I've stopped being negative about :apple: and am very happy with my 2017 purchases. When it comes time to replace my current iMac, I will buy AC+ then too.

Read my above post on why you should not get AC and get a personal insurance policy instead. Do people not read through all the replies on threads anymore?
I just called my State Farm agent, in my state and some others Ipads have very recently been dropped from the personal insurance policies, oh well. Still a great deal for other stuff though.
Interesting how it works, State farm doesn't pay for repairs, replacement only. So if I break a screen I give them my Macbook Pro, they reimburse me, either replacement cost to policy limit if I repurchase, or a "to be determined value" if I don't and just pocket cash. Then they repair the old one and resell.

Your advice of putting on a personal valuable insurance policy is not a bad idea at all, but people do need to realize the implications that can have if you have to make one or more claims. Unfortunately, insurance companies will significantly raise your rates after a claim or sometimes even drop that policy all together. This could be problematic if you use that same type of policy to insure other valuables as well.

IMHO, if you are clumsy, if you'll be using the device in drop-prone situations, or if you have kids that use the device, then going with AppleCare+ is probably the better choice since the chances of making a claim are much higher.

All of the info provided here has been great advice. This is just additional food for thought.

This is not accurate. Personal policy rates are not raised when you make a claim. This isn't the same as car insurance. Also, when a claim is filed the only thing that happens is the item is removed from the policy, the entire policy is never completely dropped. You are still able to repurchase the item again and re-add the new one.

I’ve had AppleCare on almost everything. Factory replacement on my iPhone? No need to bring it in, ac+ sends a new one and I can send the old one in after I setup the news iPhone. No 3 hour travel and server all hours wait at the Apple store.
Dropped my iPad Pro 12.9? Same story, just €79 repair cost.
I didn’t buy it on my macmini or thunderbolt screen as they are stationary and reasonable solid devices. But these days with iPad pros and iPhones?
I do mind paying the fee, but as I use them daily for my work, I prefer to have the best service.

Im kinda spooked with the multitude of problems that EVERY release of an apple product brings... And I realize you get 1YR coverage, for the usual problems... Although Im spooked Im leaning toward NOT getting AppleCare. So Are YOU getting it? AND Is there a COMPELLING reason to get it?

BTW - Im a stay at home 60 year old, so not traveling with the iPad or using it for work, etc....
No I did not purchase Apple Care for the IPP10.5 nor any of my Apple products. iPhone automatically came with it, but I trade them in every year for the new one.

Makes perfect sense and an excellent reason there is an AppleCare warranty available.

I have specifically tried to get mobile items added to my Personal article policy at State farm and was told they were specifically not covered. Maybe it varies by state?

I'll get AC+ due to resale value and having every bit of coverage counts when we don't have credit cards that give extra warranty and personal insurance policies that cover equipment damage (the best I heard is for house coverage only)

Then again. my Air 1 is still going strong despite no AC+; I was scared for it initially seeing how I then needed it for field research work daily but it did alright I guess.

I still have an iPhone 4, that was in my pocket when I was hit by a car, and it still works fine; has a few cracks and all lol. I haven't bought AppleCare for my iPad 4, Air 2, iPhone 4, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7 Plus, iPad Pro 10.5, iPad Mini 2. None have needed it.

First off most people don't want to deal with their insurance company, add me to that list and I have State Farm. Having Apple Care might be more expensive but the ease of walking into the Apple Store and having it just taken care of on the spot is worth it to a lot of people.

You literally don't have to deal with anyone when you file the claim. You go online and fill out the claim form and submit it. You are called to verify address where check is sent and you are done. You also fail to leave out the fact that you don't just "walk in". You have to make a reservation which is most time a few days out and at a certain time. Most people also don't have an apple store within a short drive of their home, then theres the hour or more wait for them to diagnose and attempt to repair your device. It turns into a half day event to get service on an iphone or ipad. You also have to pay not only $129 or whatever AC+ costs but another $79 I believe as a deductible. That's a lot to pay in comparison to "not dealing with insurance company".

Every time I needed to get a phone fixed I walked in. If I walk in with a broken device I've never been turned away.
You have had a different experience with your insurance company than many folks here. That's good for you.

I never had AppleCare, but here in Ireland, we get extended warranty under EU laws anyway - I never had problem claiming after 12 months.

On saying that, the only issue I've had has been Touch Disease on my iPhone 6.

I'm very greatful I got Apple Care on my gen 1 12.9 iPad Pro. I had gotten two dents repaired and 3 separate issues with corrosion from the Smart Keyboard removed. Total cost $120 over the year and a half I owned it.

Was able to get $820 for it since it was technically still mint when I sold it.

We're all very happy for you and your preferred insurance strategy. Calm down.

I ordered AppleCare+ together with my iPad Pro 10.5 right away. Spending almost a 1000 bucks on a device, made out of 95% screen. I figured paying an extra 10% of the price wouldn't hurt. I would feel damn ***** if I'd drop it on the floor....

Decided to go without screen protector also this time around, because I think it's screws the experience at least a little. Especially now that I use my Pencil so often. If I screw up the screen for some reason, I'll head to the store and let them replace it.

Writing with a (glass) screen protector on it, is definitely different. It's so smooth and slick my writing is even less readable then it used to be.

I have never gotten AC or SquareTrade, but as a web developer who mainly sits at a desk, travels lightly by car, etc., I think I will be ok. Like I have stated, never gotten it before and never needed it so fingers crossed!
