I would probably still buy it, but a fresh, new design is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most on the new iPhone.

I really do want to see a metal back, an oled screen of higher resolution. I think hardware improvements are important even though the software is the main focus.

Software is the most important. Than the internal components. Appearance is third. It's not that I don't care - really ugly phones like the droid are immediately less appealing. But if apple nails os 4, I'll be happy. If they also upgrade the hardware, they can keep the same design and I'd be fine with it.

If it does change, I'd lime to see a bit thinner and maybe less black space above and below the screen. Perfectly happy with it otherwise.

Btw: I'm calling it now: after os 4 brings multitasking and other goodies, the screen/resolution will be the new point of attack for haters and trolls, just like multitasking took over when os 3 brought mms, cc&p, stereo BT, etc. It will suddenly become the most important issue in the world and will prove why the iPhone is "stale," "lagging behind," and generally not as good as the android flavor of the month.

don't really care about cosmetic changes. but i do want 64GB, so i may be disappointed. :( i wouldn't place my odds any higher than 50/50.

the one thing you can definitely count on is the storage capacity doubling, so you will not be disappointed.

Haters and trolls? I actually used select, cut and delete while typing this on my iPhone.

It's a hardware complaint, not a troll rallying call. I consider it "resolution envy" after looking at how crisp the screen looks after handling the Droid and the HD2 in person. Web browsing, picture viewing and video watching is absolutely gorgeous.

It's almost like the jump from sdtv to HDTV. But I digress, people out there still do say that standard definition is "good enough" still...

If it weren't for these "haters and trolls" complaining to Apple they'd assume you were more than happy with web based applications, EDGE only (no 3G), no MMS, no copy and paste, and no stereo BT. I guess you were more than happy with the iPhone 1.0?

Don't forget videorecording on the 3Gs - only the most basic feature that even dumbphones with cameras always had.

None of those "dumb phones" generate footage that is useful for anything. The 3GS appears to be the first phone to generate usable footage. And it's certainly the first phone to contain enough internal storage to be able to store said footage. I would hardy call this a "basic feature".

Maybe I will be, and maybe not. No one knows what will be out come June. I know what I wanna see in the new iPhone. If it has what I want, then I'll deffinatly pick it up, if not, well I'll see what android has at that point. Android phones seem to be getting better and better, lol. I was looking at a customer of mines droid, and that things screen is amazing. I really hope they up the screen res.

I had a LG dare (dumbphone) that looked just as good as a 3gs and even had a flash to shoot at night. Used microsd, so storage wasn't an issue. Heck, my motorola E815 shot video to microsd and it was usable for the time.
I am eligible for upgrade from my 3g this may so, I'm waiting till the new iphone comes out before I decide to jump to an android phone. I really hope the physical appearance is updated because I don't want to look at the same phone for FOUR years! As far as accessories go, you bought them for a particular device. "My gen 1 ipod case doesn't fit my gen 5 ipod" I'll gladly buy a new 10 dollar case for a new phone. The dock connector won't ever change so most docks and other things should work but we've seen how some things don't work even when they fit. I don't understand how a higher resolution will work either with the ipad in the mix.

I've been the past three releases so I don't expect this one to really be any diiferent. The only hope that I have is android has made a prerry big splash. Windows mobile 7 might also be worth a look.

However Apple is Apple and they don't really give two ***** about whatever anybody else is doing and that's what's frustrating to me!

No. The point of the iPhone is 2 things:

Touchscreen
Software

The point of the hardware is to go as unnoticed as possible. I already just think of the hardware as 'black edges around my screen.' I'm not sure how to make it much more minimal than that. Can you? I could stand the phone to be slightly thinner (but not as thin as the iPod Touch) but that depends on the technology available. I don't think they can do much about that right now. So I really have no suggestions for what they should change.

Unless, of course, you're talking about going the other way and making the hardware MORE visable and MORE obvious.

In which case I'd say, no, that's a very bad idea.

I am suprised you said this. What you are partly referring to is cosmetics. There are three things a user interacts with, the UI, the look and feel of the device and the internal hardware, which is seamless if all works according to plan. A hardware spec bump is usually a good thing.

I think the screen should be an optional glossy or matt finish like the MBPros and that they should bring back the aluminum casing. They black iphones crack at the dock connector and the white shows all the stress fractures. Its annoying and a terrible design.

The move from aluminum to plastic solved two problems:
1. Cost - Apple saved lots of money by making the transition from metal to plastic, since apparently the metal casing was big part of the premium pricing of the original iPhones. In turn, we saw reduced prices as the plastic models rolled out.
2. Antenna reception - phone signals penetrate better behind plastic in comparison to metal.

However, aluminum backed premium phones these days seem to be getting around connection issues, probably due to clever antenna placement. I hope they either find a more durable plastic solution (soft touch plastic would be nice), or go back to aluminum with some clever engineering.

I understand cost and antenna are some of the reasons for the change to plastic casing however the aluminum was so pretty and it goes so much more with the new Apple look. For example the aluminum imacs, the aluminum macbook pros. But of course that is why each have own opinion to these things. I mean, I'm a girlie girl and would have LOVED pink iphone, sadly I'd get bored of it (therefore I buy lots of cases). OH how neat would it be for apple to have a "design your own..." section to the online store realistically it would not happen, but I can dream right? And there should be an option to get rid of the "stock" apps that I don't ever use. I currently drag them to the VERY last page... but the page is still there.

I can go on about pointless stuff...

Titanium works just fine for this guy, seems not to have any antenna problems either.

Yeah, I'll probably be disappointed. The iPhone is a piece of mainstream crap now.

As far as looks go I am unsure whether or not we'll get an aluminum back again.
For:
  • iPad is alu.
  • Look at the HTC Legend, I think it looks really good.
Against:
  • They had to drop it for reception issues
I would love to see an iMac design, with the glass on the front going all the way to the edge, with an alu back.

Hardware, I really think we'll see an OLED display, because of the iPod Touch side. Both Sony and the Zune HD have OLED displays and the reviews say that the display is easily better than the iPod Touch's.
Better camera I think is a given. Flash I hope we get, but it I think apple will only put it in if they think they can integrate it well with the design of the back.
Again faster processor and more memory is a given.
Capacity I am unsure of, I think if the Touch gets any bigger it will be pushing into the iPod Classic's market, so I think for this year at least the capacity will still be 32gb.
I really hope we also see an improved battery. I know the iPad is bigger in physical size but it can get one month on standby/lock, even with the iPhone obviously having a constant network connect etc. I think that could translate to improve battery life.

Software, I am still unsure about multitasking. Other than music apps, I don't personally see much benefit in it. If we do get this though I don't think we will see that feature on the 3G and maybe not on the 3GS, due to the lack of power and battery.
I would love to see expose, HTC Legend has it controlled by a pinch to zoom out and looks great.
An absolute must for me is an lockinfo style lock screen. When I was jailbroke it was so useful being able to see my calender on my lock screen.
Based on the iPad we will defiantly see home-screen backgrounds. Although I wanted this at first, after see the iPad, I think apple had the right idea at first with only giving us a black background. I think it looks rubbish on the iPad.

That's just my thoughts.

i honestly would not mind at all if they made the iphone slightly bigger to accomodate a 4 inch screen...but it isnt necessary.

I dont really care about cosmetic changes...except for the screen.

Its somewhat necessary that apple upgrades the screen to something of higher resolution. anyone that says the screen is fine either has horrible eyesight, or they have never used any phones with a nicer display, so they dont even know what they are missing..
I got a nexus one a few months ago...and although the iphone has a MUCH nicer touchscreen digitizer...the screen itself doesnt even come close to that of the nexus one. I dont know what apple will do to support higher resolution (since it wont be doubled..like the ipad)...but they need to do SOMETHING to compete with all the other smartphones out there. The pixel density on the iphone is bottom of the barrel these days...hopefully they will up it to 480x800 and possibly even OLED with this next phone.
the phone can get thicker, wider, heavier...thats all perfectly acceptable...but the screen is WAY behind the competition.

Unfortunately, since i am reading all of these replies, apparently the general public doesnt find any need for an upgrade in resolution...hopefully jobs feels differently about it!
If they just took a 3gs and upgraded the screen on it, I would buy it! I have been perfectly happy with the 3gs as far as speed and capability...but after using a nexus one for a while, when you go back to the iphone, its a bit of a disappointment.
Im hoping for:
3.7-4 inch screen at resolution of 480x800 (maybe even more if possible)..
OLED would be nice
a underclocked version of their A4 chip (unless they have something based off the cortex a9 by then...that would kick ass!)
more RAM, 512mb..
hopefully a nice LED flash and camera like on the N1...camera on this thing is incredible!
various OS improvements, multitasking, etc.

As far as a higher resolution screen...apple has talked of resolution independence in the past, so maybe higher res is a potential after all...we can only hope!

However Apple is Apple and they don't really give two ***** about whatever anybody else is doing

One of the few truths I've read in this thread.

Alu back. Since the reception issues only plagued the older iPhone, seeing that the iPad sports Alu now and reception issues resolved, this will be a possibility for the iPhone 4. Personally I don't care. I just want a lighter iPhone. If Apple decides to go plastic again, just make it sturdier and less crack-prone.

Bigger Screen. Nope, don't hold your breath. The SDK for App devs are specifically for 3.5 inches only. Having a bigger screened new iPhone will stretch the hundreds of thousands of Apps that we are using now. Android does that but that's very un-Apple:p, We will see the same 3.5 inch size but there's a possibility the 320 x 480 pixels will be upgraded to 480 x 800 pixels (similar to the Nokia N900 and the Samsung OmniPro screens). AMOLED? Although I'd love this, I'm skeptical Apple may want that outdoor visibility limitation. Now if Apple could utilize Samsung's newest screen technology they're coining Super AMOLED (used by the Samsung Wave); superior indoor and outdoor visibility, now that's the utmost in screen tech right now. But yep, knowing Apple, I'd see them sticking to LED but upgrading the pixels.

Better camera I think is a given. Flash I hope we get, but it I think apple will only put it in if they think they can integrate it well with the design of the back.
Plus one.
Again faster processor and more memory is a given.

I believe we will see the new A4 Apple low-power system-on-a-chip processor found in the iPad. Although I'm not too sure we'll get the 1GHz flavor yet since the current processor now is quite smooth and fast on the 3GS's current OS (yes, smoother than the Nexus One's 1GHz). I'm thinking Apple is more concerned in solving this battery life issue we are suffering at the moment. But yep, who wouldn't want a faster processor as long as the power consumption issue is kept at bay. Perhaps this new chip is gonna do wonders.

Capacity I am unsure of, I think if the Touch gets any bigger it will be pushing into the iPod Classic's market, so I think for this year at least the capacity will still be 32gb.

Plus one. Although I'm praying for a 64gb bump. It will all depend on the flash pricing. But your assessment is nearer reality.

Software, I am still unsure about multitasking. Other than music apps, I don't personally see much benefit in it. If we do get this though I don't think we will see that feature on the 3G and maybe not on the 3GS, due to the lack of power and battery.

I had been waiting for this even to come to the 3GS. But after seeing the iPad specs (a device that will really benefit from multitasking), I'm skeptical we'll see it in the iPhone 4. Perhaps some sort of partial-multitasking feature on selected Apps. If this won't hamper power consumption, I'm hoping Apple will give this. But yeah, I'm getting skeptical about this.

Oh well, better battery life wouldn't be so terrible.

I would probably still buy it, but a fresh, new design is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most on the new iPhone.

Oh yes, but I think the current form factor is pretty nice. Can't see how they can potentially give the design a facelift.

I really do want to see a metal back, an oled screen of higher resolution. I think hardware improvements are important even though the software is the main focus.

A metal back would be awesome, but there again, reception is an issue that Apple does not want to compromise.

Alu back. Since the reception issues only plagued the older iPhone, seeing that the iPad sports Alu now and reception issues resolved, this will be a possibility for the iPhone 4.

What? How is the 3G iPad any different from the original iPhone? There's still an ugly plastic strip for the signal to get through. So really, they didn't solve anything... they're using the same design as the original iPhone. They "solved" the issue by making the iPhone 3G plastic.
