Subject: At long last - my MP7,1 has moved from "Processing" to "Preparing to Ship"

I had ordered the MP7,1 Dec 12th as configured below... and the estimated delivery was Jan 30-Feb 7
Hardware:
  • 3.3GHz 12‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • 4TB SSD storage
  • Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory
  • Apple Afterburner card
  • Stainless steel frame with wheels
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English
  • Accessory Kit
And on Dec 21st I decided to change the order to... and the estimated delivery was moved to Feb 7-13
Hardware:
  • 3.2GHz 16‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • Radeon Pro Vega II with 32GB of HBM2 memory
  • Apple Afterburner card
  • Stainless steel frame with wheels
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English
  • Accessory Kit

Today the status changed from "Processing" to "Preparing to Ship" ?

How long in general does it take for the 'status' to change from "Preparing to Ship" to "Shipped" ?

So will it be shipping from Austin TX, or China ? I guess once I receive the shipping tracking info I will be able to determine if it's coming from Austin or China, right ?

Given the various 'horror' stories I've read here of the delivery person mishandling the 80 pound box, should I be prepared to stand outside my house on the roadside to help the delivery person carry/move the box into my house ? Would this be a sensible thing for me to do ?

Our UPS driver regularly uses a hand truck for heavy/bulky items, and our door isn't even very far from the street. Not sure if that's the case for you, but regardless the way these things are boxed is impressive itself (the packaging practically doubles the weight of the Mac Pro--80 lbs total), so I wouldn't worry about any sort of normal (mis)handling of the box getting it to your door.

If you're generally happy with your delivery guy anyway, it can't hurt to slip him a tip before your Mac Pro is due to arrive while mentioning you've got some heavy equipment arriving. Ours is happy to help bring heavy things through the front door when we catch him walking up during the delivery.

That all sounds comforting. My house is one-level with double entrance French doors, and my driveway is circular gravel leading to two shallow steps up to a long level concrete pathway to the house entrance doors. So if a hand truck is used it should not be a problem hopefully.

Considering the price paid, I would...

Looking on the UK Apple store, even the base model isn’t available till 28th Feb..... ?
So they obviously don’t have any base config’s stockpiled up.

Well, now my MP7,1 order status has changed to "Shipped" and the MP7,1 is on its way to my doorstep via UPS to be delivered Feb 4th. :) ?

Have tried the UPS tracking web site but so far it's not showing up, so cannot determine if it's shipping from Austin TX or China.

According to some people posting in this forum, the MP7,1 is shipped from Austin TX if the delivery is to a USA address, otherwise the MP7,1 ships from China. I guess I'll find out over the next 24 hrs where my MP7,1 ships from. :)

I ordered mine on the 18th Dec. Never made any changes. Estimated delivery date is 8-14 Feb from the beginning and haven't changed from processing.

Here's my order:

Hardware:
  • 2.5GHz 28‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • 4TB SSD storage
  • Two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo with 2x32GB of HBM2 memory each
  • Apple Afterburner card
  • Stainless steel frame with wheels
  • Magic Mouse 2 + Magic Trackpad 2
  • Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English
  • Accessory Kit

My CC was pre-authorized twice. My XDR shipped a few days after the 2nd pre-authorized charge (with the actual amount posted to my statement after I received the display). It's been a few days since that 2nd charge and the status hasn't move to "prepare to ship" yet.

The Mac would definitely come out of China (I'm in Bangkok but having it shipped to Hong Kong). I'm wondering whether the delay is because of the wheels or the Virus pandemic going on over there!!???

I considered two Vega II duos but went with one. I'm glad - when working with FCPX, the GPU barely registers activity - as the Afterburner Card seems to be carrying the load.

I've never used FCPX and don't do any Video processing... so I don't know why I ordered the Afterburner?!?! Probably would end up putting it up for sale...

Why did you get the Vega II duo?

Twice the gpu power with a left over MPX module slot. Future proofing what ever changes come to film editing in the future. This machine is expected to last 6 to 8 years with daily - heavy use.

Hmmm, UPS is messing with me..... The delivery date has now been moved back to the original delivery date of Feb 4th 1:15 PM - 5:15 PM. Currently it's at DFW Airport TX, USA. So I assume it will now travel by air to my local airport over the weekend. It left Round Rock, TX on Jan 31st.

Given UPS is apt to change delivery date/time again, I'll need to keep a watchful eye on the MP7,1's shipping tracking info. I wouldn't be surprised to see UPS change the delivery date/time again as I'm sure the MP7,1 box would be at my local airport today sometime.

Well my MP7,1 is doing a 'milk run' around the USA. Not sure if it's taking short flights or traveling by land ? With the various transition locations I hope it isn't being shuffled around too much. At this time it is heading east and in the wrong direction. ;) If it's indeed a 'milk run' then maybe the truck/plane is dropping off multiple MP7,1 to customers around the USA. I'm hoping that later today it will start heading west toward my location just north of Seattle. No matter, my MP7,1 is clocking up some serious 'frequent flying/driving miles'.:):p

This delay is just ridiculous. It shouldn't take over a month for Apple to build a customized Mac Pro.

I'm guess my MP7,1 is being transported by truck.
The distance between Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (DFW), TX and Louisville, KY is some 855 miles. Assuming a truck can average 55 mph over this distance then the travel time will be around 15.5 hrs. The UPS states departure from DFW was 9:44 PM on Feb and arrived Louisville, KY at 12:56 PM Feb 2. This is an elapsed time of approximately 15 hrs. Given it's Super Ball Sunday in USA, many transportation folk will be preoccupied and unable to drive/fly safely.... and my MP7,1 will b e left in some wayward warehouse corner for a day. So I conclude my MP7,1 is being moved by truck/lorry at this time. Maybe it will fly 1st Class from Louisville to Seattle (SeaTac). :p

I'm guess my MP7,1 is being transported by truck.
The big express carriers operate a hub-and-spoke system. Air freight flies from wherever to an airport hub in the central US, then from the hub to the destinations. Hub-and-spoke scales far better than a mesh of direct flights.

UPS has a big hub in Louisville (https://www.ups.com/aircargo/), so it's perfectly logical for a Texas -> Louisville ->SeaTac path.

so I imagine that this is because it is shiped by boat and not by plane.
I guess they will have a boat living china by the end of the week for europe with a first high volume shipping. The computer might be 90 built and the wait until last minute to ship as much custom order as possible, and will fill the rest of the boat with what ever configuration looks popular plus a couple of each possible configuration. the rest : ram /gpu/ acessories will be customised in europe that is why we have to wait. I wouldnt be surprised if people with just annafterburner upgrade or a ram upgrade actually recieve them in a separate box. It is actualy very smart from them because all preorder will give apple a hint on what is likely to sale once here.

Mine came from there and I have a cold today. Hmmmm:oops:
then put yourself in a plastic bag and call emergency...?????
honestly the guy who would get contamined by coronavirus thru the buy of a MP7.1 do not need to work a single day for the rest of his life....
Imagine the amount of cash you would get suing apple for that!??‍♂️

So, I'll get it in a weeks time?

BTW, I'm still looking for stock 8GGB DIMMs in anyone is willing to sell them to me I'd be most appreciative.
