So you think if I move the nano sim to the AT&T Unite Pro I could be good? I really need this to work, I have no internet options in my rural area except LTE. Do you think I would be good with the Unite?

You should be fine. The unite pro takes a micro sim I believe though. So you'd need a new sim for the plan to transfer to

Although I don't have one of the very few unlimited ATT unlimited iPad plans, I've been very interested and done a lot of research on your concern. I've determined that they will not pull your plan regardless of how you use it because there are only 35 of those plans available and will not hurt their quest of providing quality bandwidth to the masses.
I have no need for one but would like to have one and have started discussions on the matter and picked people's minds to get a full understanding of every aspect of the plan. I almost bought one because all of my fears had been quelled, but I couldn't justify coughing up the cash.
I think you would be ok.
My 2 cents.:)

always felt the unlimited on the iPad would have more long term value than the same on the iPhone. especially since the iPhone was locked down from hot spot capability whence on unlimited plan. so I jettisoned the iPhone unlimited plan in favor of the ability to share via hot spot to a Mac... but the iPad with unlimited has been the real gem, and something I will never give up as long as carriers are charging the way they currently do. I can devour many gigs on the iPad, but the most I ever did on an iPhone was around 6Gb.

Exactly. Using an iPad uses more data naturally due to more consumption. Sites load desktop versions, etc. and also having my rmini jb with tetherme I use even more when using it as a hotspot.

Just watched xmen days of future past on movie box and Noah. Few gigs right there already. Movies, tv shows all streamed with no throttling. No worries about a cap. It's a great feeling for 29.99 a month

U'r just Rubin' it in lol

So you use your sim in a Unite Pro? How much data have you run through there in a month?

The most i have done on the plan with the Unite Pro was about a little over 20gbs in a month

I am worried that they will pull the plan if they know its not in an iPad, and I really need to use an actual hotspot for my home internet, since I am moving to the sticks. Do you think Ill get cut off or it will still be unlimited and unthrottled?

Any info would help greatly.

Honestly ATT is not going to bother you at all, you can put the sim card in any device and it would not be a problem. You wont have to worry about your account being cancelled for a reason like that, alot of people including myself have tested the limits months after months of testing it out and our plans and account have remained the same. ATT does not bother us at all.

How do you know for a fact that there is only 35 people avaialble with this plan?

The iPhone Data Unlimited plan is monitored like crazy by ATT vs the iPad Data unlimited plan, this is the reason.

As we all know, Apple and ATT had a exclusivity deal for 5 fives years, so the iPhone was only being released on the ATT's network. That means for 5 years ATT has been adding iPhone users with Unlimited Data , i cant even count how many users are on there network with unlimited smartphone data. Thats millions of users, and keep in mind ATT had alot of network issues because of the users with the unlimited data plan with the iPhone, thats why the 2GB throttle was in place and if your caught tethering they was so quick to cut you off because for 5 years straight, that gave millions of customers the ability get unlimited data, and it caused alot of issues for ATT, aside from the customers tethering and using lots of data.

VS

The iPad 3G was released on April 30th, ATT has stop offering Data unlimited on June 7th. Thats 38 days a iPad 3G user was given the ability to buy the unlimited data plan and get grandfathered in.

Now lets do that math here.

5 years worth of iPhone sales with Unlimited ATT Data VS 38 days worth of iPad 3G ATT iPad Data unlimited plans.

There is a limited, very limited amount of people who hve this plan, even smaller amount of people that want to sell it.

So i would say if you want the plan jump at the oppurtunity to get it because the window is getting smaller and smaller of the people that is willing to sell it.

Exactly.

I understand people think it's sticker shock paying 1000+ for this plan but trust us it's worth it's weight in gold. Peace of mind and being able to use your devices unlimited is a great feeling. 29.99 a month.

I have an iPad Unlimited data plan too

I am also one of the few who have the iPad Unlimited Data Plan since 2010! I was gonna sell it to my sister, but after reading these posts I might as well put it in an At&t Unite Pro Hotspot and use it as my main wifi source at home. Im the only one using it so I wont be worrying using it too much. Goodbye at&t home wifi! If I were to sell it, which I probably wont, I wont go lower than $1k.

Reason why I havent used the ipad data plan sim in a hotspot is because back in 2012 I tried to use the ipad data sim on my iphone 5,it worked after configuring it with the broadband apn, but on my renewal day, at&t emailed me that there was a problem renewing my account. My credit card was fine. So I kinda panicked and since then Ive always used the data plan in an ipad. Pre-LTE Ive used the sim in an iPhone 4 for 2 years and I didnt have a single problem. But since Im reading these posts that confirm that it can be used in a hotspot with no problem, I might do it as well.

Now regarding the At&t Unite Pro Hotspot, can i just insert the nano sim from the ipad mini into the hotspot and will it work out of the box? Do I need to configure anything on the hotspot device? Does it use a nano sim or do I need an adapter?

Just pop the SIM card in, and your ready to go.

...I have no internet options in my rural area except LTE.
You do have a couple of option, although not cheap or good.

I went through this when I moved in where I am now.

Hughesnet offers two-way satellite service. Download rates are awesome, service is $70+ a month. The downside is that they have a two year contract (with $$$ ETF), and a data cap of 20 GB (which is applied DAILY).

The funny (sad) thing is you have a 30 day grace period to get out of your contract, and in that 30 days , they don't throttle you for exceeding your DAILY data cap.

They want to wait until they lock you in before making you unhappy! And the bad news is buried on their website, lots luck finding it.

Fortunately for me, DSL came to my house. Download rates suck (2.5 MB/sec), but cheaper with no cap.

Looking at Hughesnet now, looks like their prices have dropped and caps have gone up (10, 20, 30, 40 GB for $50, 60, 80, 130).

Another option is VIASat. Apparently they are rolling out a new "unlimited" service (with a 150 GB cap) for $70. You might want to check it out:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/08/12/viasat-unlimited-plan/

Neither of those things works for the way my family uses the internet. I recommend you use the function of your router that tracks data usage if you go that route to see if either is viable.

Also, call a round and verify DSL isn't available. When I moved in here, all my neighbors said hughes was the only choice. A few phone calls later, and I found out the century link now had (crappy) DSL available in my neighborhood.

Back OT: be careful about putting all your eggs in this basket.

iPad with LTE is great if you want to watch movies, etc on the iPad. But there are reports that ATT is starting to throttle grandfathered unlimited plans... exceed 5GB and get throttled to 768kb/sec.... no more movies for you at that rate!

ATT also monitors accounts for unauthorized tethering. And if you move the mini sim to another device, they monitor for use of invalid IMEI/MEID, and will tell you to stop what you are doing or lose your unlimited plan.

They throttle smartphone plans not iPad plans for now

I've been searching for a while if I can use my unlimited Data plan from my iPhone to my new iPad air with cellular. Any one have succeed doing it? I tried to put my sim, I will get a good signal for a while but every time I use the internet signal will be gone and ask me to activate a new cellular plan.. Thanks in advance ..

I tried a couple of years ago. Even went to AT&T to have them swap everything. My iPad's number went over to the phone and phone's number to the iPad. It didn't work so they swapped everything back.

The data plan resides on the SIM card - not the device. Therefore you can use the SIM card interchangeably between a phone and iPad for example.

IF you put one of these sim cards in a new iPhone, would the phone still work? I thought phone sim cards were tied to a telephone number.

Also, I think the newer iPads use the micro sim while I'm guessing the original iPad unlimited deal uses the old sim card. Does ATT replace one of these unlimited sim cards with a micro sim card if I wanted to transfer this deal to the newer iPads?

This actually sounds like it would be against the rules of this unlimited data deal>

U get a number assigned for the iPad plans as well. But no cellular phone access.

The newer iPads use a nano SIM card. You can just get a free sim from an att store then transfer it.

In conclusion I cannot use my sim card from iPhone to iPad? :(

Not true.

You can use an iPhone SIM in an iPad, though you need to install an APN profile. Go to this website on your iPad and follow the instructions (you need to be connected to WiFi). Keep in mind that you will not be able to receive phone calls or text messages, just data. Also, some people have received emails and/or text messages (when SIM is put back into phone) from AT&T regarding SIM swapping between cell phones and tablets, so do this at your own risk. I have yet to get one of these messages, though I did bite the bullet and purchased an unlimited iPad data plan off eBay.

An iPad SIM can be used in an iPhone without any workarounds.

So I bought this iPad data plan and I see that AT&T throttles you during 8am-8pm time. You also have low priority over post paid mobile broadband users.

I get 6KBps to 40KBps in day time and 300KBps-450KBps at night time. So in day-time it is just useless and at night time these are 3G speeds and not LTE speeds. So far I have tested it in unite hotspot and also in my Galaxy S5 and I never get LTE. The iPad this was activated on was an LTE iPad. I even tried changing the SIM card to make sure I have LTE capable SIM.

I do believe other users here that this plan has worked fine for them throughout last few years but I think AT&T is throttling it now. I have tried calling them and tried device reset/network reset etc etc. but no luck. This is in FL. I will be traveling to Midwest in next couple weeks so I hope that things are different there let's see.

oh and I have used 1.5GB of data so far so this is really terrible if they throttle you upon reaching 1GB.

I'm not sure what the issue is with yours. Mines not throttled. I'm over 40 gigs for the month with about 10 days to go.

ATT throttles iPhones not iPads, there is a speciality team that deals with customers that do that and that only applies to iPhone users with unlimited data, not iPad users with unlimited data.

There are millions and millions of customers with the iPhone with the unlimited data plan, there are under a 100,000 customers with the ATT iPad data unlimited plan. It was only offered from April 30th to June 7, that's 38 days, most people just bought the wifi version, not a lot of people bought the 3G version of the iPad, like i said before ATT is not worried about anyone that has the iPad data unlimited plans, there such a small amout that has them now.

Yeah can put the SIM card in any phone for data only. When you put the SIM card in a iPhone you will get 4G HSPA+ but not LTE, you put it in any other phone you will get LTE. You would need to go to unlocknz to download the profile in order to get it to work.

I tried swapping plans from my iPad to iPhone. Even went to an AT&T store to get their help with the process. Didn't work.

There not gonna do it for you, because it against the policy to do that, so of course there not going to help you, you would need to do that on your own.

But I think I know what your issue is.

When you look at your iPad on the top left corner do you see 4G or do you see LTE on the screen.

Also go to ATT.COM/ipadlanding and login to your account and scroll down and does your plans say.

Unlimited MB 30 Days

Or

Unlimited MB 30 Days - LTE

Let me know so I can see what the issue is.

I think the only way you can get these types of speeds is if you are on 4G not LTE.
