Being able to use data and voice at the same time is actually a bigger deal to me than I once thought. Try running Slacker Radio on a Verizon phone while still being able to take calls.

I'm not an AT&T fanboy but I sure would miss that feature if I had to go back to Verizon for some reason.

What about the fact that Verizon locks down their phones with their lame GUI and won't allow apps being purchased unless its from them.

As already mentioned, neither of these bogus "facts" are true about their smartphones. Never has been.

You still get the calls. You're thinking of ATT's EDGE data, which shunts incoming calls to voice mail. Verizon's data setup gives voice calls priority.

Makes sense since the 1st Gen doesn't have 3G...

Love the condescending attitude. Thanks for that. Arn really needs to get rid of that smilie...

Where in the post that I quoted does he say he doesn't get 3G? Pretty sure the first line is him commenting on how poor his 3G speeds are.

You said "As long as you have 3G coverage you can do simultaneous voice and data." It's redundant to say "unless you're using a first generation iPhone" because the 1st Gen doesn't have 3G anyway.

Ahhh.... I see where you're coming from.

Still don't see the need for the .

Are you more worried about this or dropped calls?

Dropped calls is a daily embarrassment that AT&T users experience. When you run a business, and your phone calls drop in an important conference call because you are on an iPhone (AT&T network) - you'll want to do something about it. It happens again, and you'll definitely do something about it.

Ever hear of this innovation called a landline? If your conference call is so important that you cannot afford a dropped call, should you not be using a landline? I mean really, every carrier drops calls from time to time. That is why when I am at work, I use a landline to talk to my vendors and suppliers. Same reason my landline is listed first on my business card.

I got this right off www.att.com

Pretty interesting.

Unfortunately, the "Best Coverage Worldwide" is pretty useless to almost everyone 99% of the time. While it can be the "Spottiest Coverage Locally" most of the time for A LOT of people.

Marketing is lame.

I'm not sure where all of you live but everywhere I go in Chicago I get great 3G coverage. I've always had great at&t coverage.

AT&T is claiming to have the fastest network only because they have selected markets with 7.2Mbps HSDPA. In other areas (meaning 98% of their coverage footprint), it's on par with Verizons EVDO.

Well, as of 2 weeks ago, I am getting the fastest 3g speeds ever at home. In a town of 1200 people. Granted it is 40 miles outside of Houston. 3 weeks ago I was on EDGE at home. Now it is 3g, and faster according to Speedtest than anywhere else I have been in Houston. I may be the only iPhone/smartphone user on the cell tower, but it is really nice. 10 miles up the road in Cleveland it is EDGE, so ATT must be rolling it out up the freeway. Hopefully in a couple of weeks or so it will be active there too, then I will be totally happy.

Side data point, Criket (which uses Verizon's network I believe) barely works at my house...

I'm always on the go Chef...

I didn't know what dropped calls were till I got an iPhone a couple years ago. I was on Verizon before, and am now on Verizon after the switch back. I need something reliable, and my company decided that as well...

Pwn'ed. Now they need to whip out the CDMA vs. GSM Maps. " there's a map for that". Still AT&T needs to step up there reliability if they want to get into a pissing match with verizon or else it's gonna get ugly fast for AT&T.

certainly you don't mean verizon should reply with such a map... unless you have never looked at a global map of CDMA vs GSM...

Point taken and understood. I guess I was just trying to make a point too. Cellphones are not the end all and be all of 3 nines of uptime. After Hurricane Ike hit here, my cell was spotty, in and out as the tower's backup generator would run out of gas, but the landline and DSL actually never went down, or at least not that I could tell.

I have had cell service from Cingular then ATT since 2002, and never had a problem. Yea sure, dropped calls from time to time, really though my iPhone is better than the ATT 8525 it replaced, and that I had for almost 3 years before I got the 3GS. Some of my best friends are on Verizon though, and they swear by it, so I can see both sides of the coin.

To each his own I guess. I would not trade my iPhone and ATT for anything else right now.

Come to Arizona specifically the Phoenix Metro area. After having Verizon for who knows how long and using their version of 3G (EVDO) It was slow as heck. I found ATT does indeed have a faster 3G network, as opposed to Verizon.

i loved Phoenix but the wife won't move :(

I could go for an ice cold Kilt Lifter.....yummy

I think you took our exchange out of context.
it was a feature I never used and Lost cleared it up for me.

my 3G speeds seem slower than they should be. but then again the tower I can finally pull 3G from, a 30 second walk from my front door, is brand new as are the 3 main towers I use regularly.
Faster than edge, absolutely
faster than verizon, doesn't seem to be.

Quite useful for those who tether and TALK at the same time.

I do this only occasionally but works well with my 17" iPod (MBP)

My post wasn't about that, I was just correcting something lostprophet894 said.

I was in Anaheim a couple of months ago, with an NZ SIM (that could use both AT&T and T-Mobile). I found that AT&T's service was appalling; it kept dropping from HSDPA to EDGE and sometimes it'd drop off AT&T completely and move to T-Mobile. AT&T was the "priority" in the phone so after a while it'd see AT&T again and re-connect, only to drop back to T-Mobile later. For the record, the phone was a Sony Ericsson W705a.

I didn't take my CDMA phone so I wasn't able to see how Sprint and Verizon stacked up (phone roams on both).

I have no problems at all here in LA with At&t and don't know many other people that do either. I hear complaints from some people that live in the hills, but I've never heard of any company having perfect service there. When I lived in Michigan my service through At&t was better since they had more coverage where I lived. My iPhone worked in my basement and everywhere else in my house, which is more than I can say for the enV my brother had.

I understand that many people have issues with At&t, but I don't get why they keep the At&t phone and complain. They had 30 days to try the service and leave if it wasn't working for them. I happen to be a happy customer and love that I average over 1 Mbps on 3G :)

I would also like to point out how much I love the seamless transition with my iPhone when I went to the Bahamas and all over Canada having service was no problem. Others in my family weren't so lucky.

AT&T will get stronger over time. If the iPhone launched on Verizon, i bet Verizon would have had a messed up network too. AT&T is getting better :)

I agree, (don't acutally use at&t because I live in aus) but I also don't like how At&T took it on probably knowing that it was going own there network. But maybe I didn't think that the iphone was going to sell like it did. With all the money they are getting from the iPhone, you just need to give them time to build there network up to support all the data usage. It was going to happen sooner or later with all these 3g data plans for you laptop.

As already mentioned, neither of these bogus "facts" are true about their smartphones. Never has been.

I second that. Those "facts" have been overused for years. There are other, more relevant reasons why a Verizon - Apple partnership would not work.

Ok, I couldn't remember exactly how that worked (I used to be a Verizon customer before I jumped ship for the iPhone). In any case, I still want to be able to use data while I'm in a call. I often look stuff up while speaking to someone, or as another person mentioned, tether while talking. But I guess these aren't huge deal-breakers for people who want to be on Verizon for other reasons.

This actually works:

Call AT&T
Tell them you want to cancel your contract
They'll ask why
Tell them you're not using enough minutes or too expensive
They'll ask you if you want to switch to 300 minutes for $30/mo.

This is what they did when I went to cancel.

some dood replied "great deal...not"

??

actually that is a good deal, saves 10 bucks on something ud be throwin away anyways (especially with voip calling)
