I've just done the Monterey Update and the popping is still there in my situation too. I'm using bluetooth headphones (AKG k371-BT) and listening on spotify.

Hello,

Could you please test with this setting?

Open Firefox --> Go to about:config in URL --> Search media.webspeech.synth.enabled (true --> false) --> Restart Firefox

Edit: This doesn't work for me. I play a YouTube video and I open this website on a 2nd tab (scroll up and down quickly) and audio cracking appears. Could you try?

Link : https://www.elektron.se/products/digitone/

I try now with media.autoplay.block-webaudio (false --> true). It's better now, no ???

I tried setting media.autoplay.bock-webaudio from false to true, and the popping sound is slightly better, but it is still occurring for me.

This issue just popped up (haha) for the first time on my 2019 16-inch MBP. I was playing music from Spotify in macOS12.0.1, when all of a sudden both speakers popped/made a crackling noise. Strange!

Edit: just a few minutes later again!

Installed macOS Monterey and it is better now. No popping in Safari/iTunes/Spotify anymore. Still got popping with Firefox though. But I don't use Firefox that much for YouTube/sound. So I'm kinda happy. Lol.

Popping sounds still occurring in Firefox. Also, noticed it occasionally happening in Chrome as well. Safari (for me) still has not exhibited any popping sounds.

I have bought New MBP 64 gig of ram M1 max chip 2 TB 16 inch - been delivered 18th November
Comes standard with the new OS Montery - i am a music producer from Scotland

Example - The Minute I open reason (propellerhead)and play Apple TV the crackling an popping are horrendous on both

I can replicate this issues at anytime

If I open just reason the crackling and popping are terrible especially on the big file songs that use native and output sample and any recorded vocal (I use a shuresm7b)

I Contacted apple today 19th November put through to after sales and the are re building me a new machine (from China by the way) and sending it out as I let them hear the Terrible sounds.

I have re installed montery just incase but when I open reason same issue
If I close reason and open Apple TV I don’t get a pop or crackle from Apple TV
Sound is even worse when 2 applications are using the audio the crackling and popping are horrendous

This cost me £4700

I have tried this through my id44 Audient interface to bypass the audio on the MCP
STiLL THE SAME ISSUE

So much for this m1 max is for professionals - well its NOT for audio professionals
I bought this for m1 max speeds using audio
I will wait on the new one coming if this fails they can keep it -

I have a specked out iMac £6000 and a Mac book pr 2015 model - both have never ever poped or crackled EVER

Has anyone tried to sent his device in? If they can't fix it, they will take it back normally.

Has anyone a reliable way to reproduce the error on demand? A special file, a special way?
On my device the popping occures while jumping around in movie-files or while streaming on netflix or youtube.
yip me

I've found a fix for my issue. I bought a new USB-C to 3.5mm cable. I'm wondering why I didn't think to do that a long time ago now!

Audio popping/crackling-problems started with the T2-chip in Intel machines (2016).
Obviously still a problem on M1 Macs (wether on Big Sur or Monterey).
Since this problem still is here 5 years on makes me believe that this is a hardware issue (T2/M1).

If you want problem free audio on Mac: stick to 2015 (or older) Intel Macs.

Actually T2-chip Intel machines didn't come out until 2018. 2016-2017 Mac's used the T1 chip.

I know that this audio popping / crackling-problem is a software issue. I think it started after el capitan. High sierra was popping and crackling on my older mac but after going back to older mac os it was gone. Windows on bootcamp was working fine too. I now have new 16 inch macbook pro and it is still popping / crackling when its connected to my DAC.

Quicktime fix helps sometimes and also restarting computer after sleep.

On macOS 12.1 RC, popping sound is still present in Firefox (95.0), and also I can hear it sometimes in Opera (latest version). Safari has zero popping sounds (for me). Chrome (96.0) so far has not had any popping sounds either.

I updated to Monterey 12.0.1 and the popping sound is better on Safari and Chrome. It only pop sometimes in the beginning of a video. The static popping noice is still very much present in Firefox when just pausing or scrolling through a video. The QuickTime fix is the only thing that helps for me.

I've pretty much learnt to live with it now - which is a shame considering how much I paid for this machine.

I have a Macbook Air M1, bought a week ago. Whenever there's a video file with audio, whether I play it with sound or not, I hear the popping / crackle. Only solution is to have something running that makes it so that the sound card doesn't deactivate or whatever it is that it does.

I'm considering heading to an iStore and ask about this matter. However, I've absolutely 0 hopes of coming back with a worthwhile response.

Although it seems a software issue, you are still able to return and replace the system if it was only purchased a week ago......

Yes, however considering the amount of people that I have seen returning their mac and coming back with the exact problem doesn't really entice me to do so. But oh well. I'll give an update on what I'm told. I'll be having a support call tomorrow, beforehand.

Haven't come across that yet. What steps, video, volume level, etc. to replicate?

Honestly, no "steps" required, per say. I'm always using headphones, so volume really isn't that much of a factor. Of course, if the volume is louder, the crackle is more noticeable. Other than that, common usage of the mac is enough to trigger this issue.

Edit: for example, if I visit Instagram, and there's a video that autoplays on mute, I'll hear the crackle. It doesn't matter if I unmute it, I'll hear the crackle as long as the video autoplays. On Youtube, if I click on a video, I'll hear it right before it starts.
