Last but not least, a complete desktop make-over for August - in pastel green.

If I only I could figure out an easy way to change those finder and trash can icons!

I've tried to go get my dock smaller, but I use all those apps on a regular basis. I find opening up a finder window, browsing to applications, finding the app and double clicking it a bit of a pain in the arse, if I can just get to it quickly via the dock.

I'd love some suggestions on easier ways to access all my favorite apps without clogging up my doc?
FruitMenu, etc. are pretty cool, but you still end up having a thing with a bunch of icons on it taking up screen space. Quicksilver is nice because it works sort of like searchlight will in Tiger. I'd just keep using the dock, it's probably the easiest. And I wasn't criticizing or anything, just impressed to see someone make that many dock icons useful :) :D

:)

MacFan26,
No criticism taken, I'm sorry if I came across like that. I've been very frustrated myself trying to find a more streamlined cleaner way of accessing my apps, without a ton of icons in my dock.

I downloaded both Fruit Menu and Quicksilver, and I got FruitMenu figured out pretty easily. But I can't figure out Quicksilver.

Thank you for the suggestions!! :) :)

Where did you get that icon set? Also how did you change your apple menu up top to be green?

Yeah, Quicksilver's kind of weird. If you open the program, and then click on the dock icon, the search window should come up. It's pretty handy, but took me a while to figure that out too

I use LaunchBar and I think it's great. It also acts like spotlight will and appears in the top right hand corner of the screen only when you click on it in the dock. But even better you can set it to hotkeys so you don't even have to click on it. Mine is command and spacebar but there are others you can choose from.

My desktop isn't usually this messy!

Of the 45 applications you have on your dock.. you have 5 running. :)

I'd forget about the desktop and work on cleaning out the dock!

I find Quicksilver works best if you hide the dock icon (I mean that's one of the reasons you got it in the first place) and just use the hot keys to activate the search box. I think the default hot keys is ctrl-space but you can change it to whatever you want, I like command-space, and then you just type the beginning letters of the app you want to open. Play round in preferences to get it how you want, hope this helps!

.....so why doesn't Panther allow you to customise your desktop appearance to this degree?

i don't bother customizing the one i work mostly with. as i have to swipe it sometimes even 5 times a day. .. and the other mac i work with has too messy desktop to take pics of. and the home mac has the same problem ..

Panther does ALLOW us to do it.. you can see proof of it in almost every post of this thread.

There's a huge third party to this stuff, I like it... some great software, icons, desktops... all very cool. Don't complain because apple doesn't gift wrap it for you.

:)

how do you mean?

All I see are people asking the question "How do I get my icons or desktop to look like that........ and links to commercial software that you have to pay for to do it.

The commercial software people are referring to perform a function and are not there just to decorate your screen ;)
