I suspect it is taking time for the Big Sur download to get populated out to the various content delivery network (CDN) nodes - hence at first we're all hitting a central location and swamping it - once the CDN's are populated the speed will significantly increase because it will be distributed and we'll be getting the large download much more geographically locally

the whole installer is 12.18 so 16 should be fine.

I restarted to try and kick start the download and now I can’t open apps.

guess I’m seeing how good that back up is.

I'm on my 8th try. Stalled out at many points (as many here have referenced). Several flat-out installation failed. Many reboots, clearing NVRAM (why not), etc. If you look at the main page article of release, the comments are up to 650 comments, all of whom are dealing with the same thing.

How/Why is this not an updated article on MR main page?

My installation aborted at 2.xx GB. I noticed the Catalina Supplemental Update was never installed, so I’m doing that now and will try Big Sur later.

Im giving up until Im off work in a couple hours. My Mac keeps failing every time, cant even count how many times Ive tried it in the last 2 hours. Unjoined the beta both in Software update and via terminal, rebooted, etc.. Still nothing. May just shut off Time Machine, go back to Catalina and try again. Cant seem to download it manually either but I dont have any of that setup in Big Sur so has to wait til later..

I miss the days of direct downloads from Apple.com as opposed to the App Store or System Preferences. They’re probably just as reliable, but it feels as though one has less control. If we had a link, we could put it into a download manager and be able to resume if there is a problem.
