I'm planning on buying the 1.6 GHz, 120 SATA, $1799, base model on Black Friday. Do you guys think Apple brick & mortar stores will have them in stock by then?
I'm starting to doubt it.
You sure you didn't buy it from a Specialist? I've never seen a Genius have time to leave the Genius Bar to come out on the sales floor and sell something. They're always repairing stuff. However, running into a Specialist (those are the less-technical people on the sales floor, usually with those EasyPay PDA checkout things to ring you up) that was unaware of the SSD size wouldn't surprise me.

Any genius will tell you they have to authorization to sell anything. They may help out with your decision, but they cannot accept payments.

Hard to believe. I don't think anyone has gotten one yet.

Hi everyone, I'm from Hong Kong. I've already received my MBA 1.6GHz version with FREE UPGRADED 128GB SSD this morning!

Its hard to believe, but its really true!
That's the best thanks giving gift from Apple ever had!

I was actually thinking of placing an order myself, however, since they have quoted times of 2-3 weeks on their site I doubt I'd get an upgrade.

I think its too late to be honest, i think it was the people who ordered the first day, if wrong you still could send it back!

It's finally arrived with the SSD and everything. It does miss the 4-finger swipe but that's nothing i'm to worried about. It does have some faint lines on the LED but nothing that's gonna bother either. Way better than some of the pictures i saw in that thread.

Anybody in North America offered the SSD upgrade for free? If so that would be a smoking deal too hot to resist and I'd have to get one.

Nope I ordered at the start of november and the shipping date is still dec10th. I have talked to apple store support and customer relations which could only put a "priority" (most likely bull) on my order but no free upgrade to SSD.

nope. no one is offering a $700 upgrade for free (unless you have a time machine to order the HDD model in October and have Apple upgrade it for the delay)

^^ Agreed. I also believe this is going to happen outside the US due to some rather strict laws about the delays and such. I don't know the law but someone made reference to it.

I can say that I call 5 Apple stores a day and ask the same question. The first answer is always a resounding "yes" then I have to slow down and ensure we're both on the same page with things. After explaining that I am referring to a computer that is $1799 with a 1.6ghz processor and a 120gb hdd, the answer is always "no". A new answer today though "we no longer have that model". Interesting at best!

So lemme see, Europe gets free SSD upgrades but no 4 finger swipe and horizontal stripes. North America gets no free SSD upgrades but gets working 4 finger swipe and less chance of horizontal stripes on the screen. Overall I don't know who comes out worse.

Ugh talking to Apple store employees can be downright silly, I definitely feel your pain. After the keynote by Steve-O introducing the new Macbooks, I went to my apple store and the conversation went like so:

Me: Hi there. I just saw the keynote address and Steve mentioned the books would be shipping and in stores possibly by tomorrow. Are any shipments coming tomorrow?

Employee: We have no idea if they will come tommorow.

Me: Ah, any estimate of when the new Macbooks will come in? Like are we talking days, weeks, or months?

Employee: No idea, Apple hasn't told us anything.

Me: ...

Me: Oh yeah, right. I must have walked into the wrong store. The huge Apple sign on the front threw me off.

For those who ordered on Oct14, thats the least Apple could do since the delay in the 120HHD part was the fault of their contracted supplier. So they would have some financial compensation for lost sales, put this into the SSDs and it becomes a nice solution for Apple and the customers.

It is nice to get a great FREE upgrade, especially if one has been waiting for weeks having paid for the product!. Sometimes it pays to hang in there :)

Me: I got the new MBP and the Gen1 Air. Will get the new Air sometime next year when the SSD density hits 256GB! :D {Or till Gen3 model ?}

Actually...

I'm in Brooklyn NY, and I got mine on wednesday with the free SSD upgrade. Talk about thanksgiving!! :D

I'm not sure if it's something they'll continue to do though.. and to be honest, I don't understand the business logic behind such an upgrade. But I'm not exactly going to cry about it. Be assured Apple won't talk about it if you ask them.

Yes on the 4 finger scroll.
No to the horizontal stripes.

Everything's working as expected, so maybe I'm one of the lucky ones.

Let us know what ship date they give you. Mine is Dec 10th. Don't get your hopes up about getting an upgrade, I've tried everything from speaking to customer relations to sending a friendly email to sjobs@apple.com but never received a response.
