Hello all,

Lately I noticed that my iPhone XS has a big problem with the battery overnight. Every night I go to sleep and then wake up the next morning, my battery is 15-20% down (after 7-8 hrs).

When I go sleep I have wifi, bluetooth turned off (through settings, not the control panel), I enable "Do not disturb", background app refresh is off for almost all apps (including all social media). Yesterday I also enabled flight mode just to see if the signal was the issue.

Today I woke up and my battery went from 53% to 39%. This is a lot in idle mode and with all those settings I setup right?

Only thing I noticed which might cause the issue is how long the facebook messenger app stays on in background (although in background app refresh it is disabled? )
Please see the screenshot, it says 1h48m in background and battery usage: 2h26m

Maybe I'm wrong, that is why I am posting here. What could be the issue? Can someone please help?

Thank you

These are excellent results, 15-20% after 8 hours is completely normal and Is in fact probably the Best I’ve ever seen a phone do!

I think you've misread his post; his battery is draining 15-20% OVERNIGHT whilst it is NOT in use!

My XS drops around 2-5% at most; one night when fully charged (and not charging) it didn't drop anything!

Looks like Messenger is the culprit. Do you force kill that app at night? If yes and it continues to run in the background I’d delete the app and reinstall it to see if it goes away..

^^^Pretty much this. Kill the app before going to bed.

Messenger is probably checking for messages excessively, causing the phone to wake up and the battery to drain.

Hello,

I don’t want to put the phone on charge overnight. I am not sure if this will be good for the battery health.

I uninstalled fb messenger and re-installed it. Turned off background app refresh again etc. Again on airplane mode, wifi BT off.

And battery went 15% down.

I’m kinda running out of options. Any other suggestions? Maybe messenger app is not the issue here?

If let’s say hypothetically there’s an app causing the battery drain. It should have been displayed in battery stats right? (In screenshot I posted) showing that it drains significant amount of battery. Or is there a possibility for an app to drain battery (either because of faulty settings or not very well optimized) but not appear in the battery usage stats?

Thank you

Do the math....take the battery standby time estimates from Apple and portion it for 8 hours worth. But this time instead of having it mixed in with you’re usage. Charge to 100 then go to sleep off the charger and see what it is in the morning

Why not charge it overnight? It doesn’t harm the battery

And all social media apps need to be closed as they still run in the background even if you have background app refresh turned off.

Why don't you just get rid of that POS and go with an iPhone 8 plus? You'll save so much $$$ and gain so much more.

Nothing can happen to your battery when you charge your iPhone over night. Don’t worry. I’m charging every night with the 5W charger, slowly and safe. And after it reached 100% it doesn’t charge more. It’s using the power from the charger.

There’s another ocd standby drain thread on here somewhere where I posted and I’m losing 7% battery overnight (7-9hrs) on my 7 with a brand new battery on 12.1.

But I agree. Just plug overnight. I’ve been doing it for years and my battery health is fine. Just use it and don’t worry.

Why don’t you put your phone on the charger while you sleep?

Wrong.
You really believe that? 15-20% overnight with everything turned off is not excessive?

Everybody in this thread is wrong.

Anything more than 3-5% is too high. For a brand new XS even 3% is quite a bit.

Try DFU. Start afresh. If nothing helps it is defective.

Did you just update to iOS 12.1? It usually take 2 or 3 days to have everything fully ran in the background.

Sorry but I have a place that I sleep at, way out in the country and my MAX just barely gets a signal and my battery will loose 15% overnight just trying to maintain my cell connection.

Not Wrong. Why so judgmental?

That’s it I’m done. Screw the XS I made another thread if I should give it another shot. It looks like I’ll end up in the same boat

It’s impossible.

Even with a one bar signal it would mean there’s something wrong.

With 2-3 bars I’d expect 1-3% max.

It’s possible. When I lose signal at my work I have lost 4-5% in one hour easy where the phone is looking for signal.

Thanks for the replies.

I might try to charge the phone overnight but to be completely honest this is not a proper solution.

@ksec I updated it weeks ago so I don't think it is related with the new version.
@Newtons Apple @imagineadam The big difference with mine is that I even turned on the airplane mode (meaning no signals etc). As I said, WiFi was off, BT off, Airplane mode on, silent mode on, background app refresh completely off. Location off (except a couple of apps which turn location on while in use). And the battery still went down 15-20%.

Today I reset all settings (General - Reset - Reset all settings) for now and will test it tonight. Maybe this will fix it (??).
If not, I guess I will try to reset the whole phone.

I used a lot of phones, please don't try to make it look like 15-20% drain overnight (with everything off) is a normal thing. Especially for a new phone. It is not.

That's because the drop from 100 to 99 on pretty much every Apple device is the equivalent of about 4 percentage points. Not sure why they keep doing this, but they do.

It will not harm your battery if you charge over night.

You are not out of options. 15% over night is not excessive anyway.

15 percent is definitely excessive for a new device.

I totally agree with this. I am going to get the battery replaced in my phone to see if that helps but 15-20% drainage over that time period is unacceptable IMO.

I typically don't use my phone throughout the day so when I haven't used it much in the last 5 hours to see that the battery dropped by 10% is rather annoying.
