Uh, "there can be only one", at least on iOS. All browsers on iOS are the same, it's just skins that differ.
Well, right now this is only speculative. If a bug does exist in WebKit, then you are right. However, a bug could still exist in safari that does not directly tie into the WebKit api, then using a different browser may make a difference.

This is purely speculation but my money is on something in WebKit causing the drain, since for a lot of people, myself included, battery drain started with 14.5.1 which was the emergency release for the active WebKit exploit. I’m guessing changes that were made to fix the vulnerability introduced this issue.

1 hour of light screen on use (reddit, email, messages) and 1 hour of background music. Used roughly 40% battery on iPhone 11 Pro.

After 14.6 I'm loosing about 50% charge overnight with both Airplane Mode ON and Low Power Mode ON

This is ridiculous

I ended up restoring my phone and not applying a backup since most things are on iCloud and I get it all back by logging in. I've only downloaded a few of the apps I had and haven't set up all my settings, but it's been almost 7 hours off charger with some minimal use (less than 1 hour) and I'm at 98%. Seems to be spectacular battery life so far. I'll see what happens after downloading more of the apps I had and changing settings.

Before 14.6 my iPhone 8 would rarely hit 20% but now with 14.6 I'm at 5% in the evening, so I need to charge before going to bed already. :(

It seems that with iOS 14.6 the battery life and energy usage has got worse for me on iPhone 11 Pro.

After 14.5 the battery was recalibrated automatically, and jumped ‘magically’ from 85 to 90%, then after some cycles it is now on 94% of the original capacity.

However, with 14.5 and 14.5.1 there were no usage issues.

After updating the phone to 14.6 it now suddenly gets really warm at some very random points where, for example, browsing network as before. I cannot predict at which points. Sometimes everything is fine. It might be subjective but I think it has not been so before.

Battery has got a bit unpredictable as well - it says 25% and in the next moment drops by 5 or 10%. Drop was steady and consistent in previous iOS versions.

Anyone experiencing something similar?
Mine got back to 100% 😆😆

So 24h later doing the same as usual (browsing / some game, etc.), I was on 20% battery still. That definitely seem better than before with 14.6. where I had to charge in the morning and evening.

After some weeks with iOS 14.6, I can tell that the battery is finally back in its good performance levels.

Seriously the iPhone 12 mini is the most amazing phone i got in my entire life i really love it

i do not use the phone a lot while working, it can last me two days !

XR here - nothing special use, certainly no different (or added 3rd Party apps) than earlier OSs, and I'm finding that I'm down to the 20% warning before the afternoon is over. And Settings > Battery suggests once it starts to go, its a precipitous drop. Pretty terrible. Taken to stuffing an external battery pack and cable into my bag if I'm out for any length of time.

Thank you for doing this. I've been considering the same on my iPhone X which still has dismal battery life (with a new battery) but have hesitated because of the work involved.

Just so I understand, did you do a factory reset of the phone and then log in to iCloud?

And what has your experience been when installing apps and applying settings? Have you perhaps identified one or several apps as the battery thief/-ves?

Thank you very much in advance,
Philip

Yes, factory reset so that you're starting on a fresh install. Don't restore from backup. Of course you'll want to be sure everything is in iCloud so when you log in, everything comes back.

I still don't have all my old apps installed since I didn't end up using them, so I can't speak to whether it was one bad actor. My battery life is definitely still better than post iOS 14.6 install.

For settings, don't think anything is different. I did decide to leave background app refresh on (used to be off) and it doesn't seem to be causing issues for me.

Thank you very much for explaining. I will try this later in the week. I have in the meantime updated to 14.7.1 but see no improvement at all. The phone hits red in the early afternoon having only been on wifi and barely been used.

I'll also try leaving background app refresh on after I've reset the phone. It was one of the first settings I turned off to save battery but perhaps it doesn't actually use that much.

Best
Philip
