Just in case others are wondering, Battlefield 3 runs really well on a slightly overclocked 2011 MBP (750/900) with HD 6750M. Got an invite to the alpha trial and played it on my MBP in bootcamp as well as a gaming rig. The MBP ran it at 45-55fps. :D

can you elaborate on your fps performance in battle? (like with at least 16+ players on your screen battling it out). it would be easy to achieve a steady fps you've stated, when there are tiny skirmishes and what not. I'd be interested to know what the performance is like during a big battle with the works (land/air/infrantry).

i'm running a 2010 mac pro 2.8, 5870 and 6gb ram. i know i'll be able to run it fairly, but i'd like to run it smooth even when it gets "real busy" on the screen. so im considering maxing out my ram to 32gb IF necessary (that's the only thing i can really do with my setup and financial situation).

Most modern games will only use 2GB of ram max so upgrading to 32GB is overkill unless you are doing something ram intensive in the background. I think 4 is currently enough, 6 is OK and 8 is ideal, any more is unnecessary.

i've got my eye on this game too, being a big fan of the BF series (still prefer WW2 to modern though) i'd love to be able to play this on a mac.

I'm looking to buy the top spec 21.5" (upgraded cpu) and wonder how this will play BF3.

Any ideas peeps?

It will probably run OK however I think the 512 MB VRAM is a minimum requirement. You will probably need 1 GB of VRAM to play it well.

guess that means going for the 27" imac ? But then with having the extra real estate on screen and a higher res to deal with wouldn't that be the same as running it on the 21.5" with 500mb?

my head hurts!! ;)

It doesn't quite work that way. Yes the lower the resolution the less VRAM you need however the size of the display is not relevant. That said there are other factors other them resolution that govern the amount of VRAM needed. At the end of the day the more VRAM the better as it cannot be upgraded.

Today's games typically require 512 MB but often recommend 1 GB. It's always better to have the recommended then the required although if you have the required you can turn down certain settings to make the game work at a decent frame rate but by compromising some of the graphical effects/detail.

My Mini only has 256 MB of VRAM and I'm thinking of either upgrading my Windows PC or building a new one. My PC is about 3 years old and the the graphics card in that is an Nvidia with 256 MB which doesn't really cut it anymore for the top PC games and even 512 can be pushing it.

I will.

One problem I have is that I just bought the new deus ex game and am running it through bootcamp and it runs terribly. I had to put everything off just so i could move and actually aim my weapon. I have gadgets running and they say that I am not using much of my CPU or GPU so I have no idea why the game runs so poorly. Anyone have any ideas?

maybe you are in a power saving mode. Make you you have better performance (or whatever it says) clicked.
I had that a couple times, I was really annoyed my games are at like under 20fps. Reason for that was that I was on power saving mode.
Power saving throttles the load on the computer, thats why CPU and GPU are hardly used.

You could always run it windowed rather than full resolution and full screen. I did that on my old computer that couldn't pump out the pixels at at 1920x1200.

so running windowed on a 21.5" imac, say at 1280x1024 or summat should allow the game to run reasonably well? there's hope yet!! :D

I may just wait until the game comes out, get Chrimbo out the way and sit it out until the new spec imac is released in the new year - just maybe the 21.5" may come with 1Gb gfx ;)

Exclude apple from anything that has to do with high end gaming please!

Good night!

The ugliest piece of computer hardware I have seen in a while. I could marvel at nice game graphics when I happened to play but the rest of the time my eyes would bleed at the sight of the machine itself. I'll stick with MBP and lower the game settings a bit rather than use that monster, thank you very much.

^^ the 3000 is slightly faster then the GT320 so it may just be payable at very low settings. But, a lot of gaming houses don't support Intel Graphics so you may be out of luck. TBH if it does run , it aint going to be pretty.

unhelpful....

and there may be few apple computers that can capably handle todays most demanding games but they do exist, you may aswel exclude ps3 and 360 from high end gaming (based on performance) if you are to exclude all of apples computers

A few questions.

How will (indeed, will it at all) this play on the mac mini with discrete gfx?
How will it play on the base 21.5" imac?

I'm assuming that seeing as the minimum memory is 512Mb gfx that it ain't got a hope in playing well enough on a mac mini to be enjoyable. The base imac does have 512Mb and seems to meet the min requirements so i'm guessing (hoping) there is hope yet!

I would be surprised if it played on a Mac Mini at all. I suspect the game won't run in the first place as it will detect there isn't enough VRAM. Even if it did it would be unplayable I expect. On a base iMac it probably will run but most likely at the lowest settings. It probably would be playable but I'm not sure if it would be a good experience.

2010 15" MBP w/ Win 7 x64

Hey guys,

I have a 2010 MBP 15" running Windows 7 x64 with a NVidia GT 330M graphics card and when I first tried to play the beta, it told me I needed the 285.27 drivers. When I did the search for the drivers, I found there was a 285.38 driver available so I downloaded that one instead of the 285.27, only to find it made the gameplay super jumpy and laggy for me to where it is unplayable now. Any advice on what to do? Thanks!

(Almost) Same system as me and it's running great. Very smooth so far, but I haven't tried messing with the settings so it's all set to low and 1280x800 for now. Looks great still. From what I can tell I should be able to play at probably near medium.

MacBook Pro 17" (mid 2010) Windows 7 32-bit
Core i5 2.53Ghz
GT 330M 512MB VRAM 285.38 beta drivers
4GB RAM (2.2 free for the game)

Oh wow, well that's good news for me then, I've just gotta figure out what is making mine act the way it is. I'm not a huge computer guru but I'll try to explain what I've found about my system. Ive got 4GB of RAM on my MBP and my "approx. total memory" for my graphics card is 2.2 GB as well and my current display mode is 1680x1050 (32bit). Also, what is Page File memory? Mine is 1.8 GB but I have 6GB available. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Here's my system specs

27" iMac
8gb Ram
6970m 1gb ram

My question is if anyone here is using a computer with the same or very similar specs and has tried the BF3 open beta, and if so how is that running for you?

IF your specs beat the recommended specs then the game will run fine.

I have
27"imac, i7, 6970 1gb, and 12gb of ram.
Game runs flawlessly at native resolution, and everything on high (except AA which is on medium)
