Why do we need higher resolution on a 2.5" screen? I think the quality is already great.

God i hope apple wasn't in charge of that commercial, it got the point accress but what i didn't like was the apple logo in the white box...they couldn't just put the apple logo by itself...

Old people (with apologies to those who watched Adam-12 or Knight Rider as new episodes).

I grew up in the 90s, so Knight Rider was one of those USA re-run shows that I watched when and only when absolutely nothing else was on. But, think big picture - if iTunes can be opened to a whole new audience, especially with shows like Adam-12, Hitchcock Presents, etc., from the 1950s and 1960s, then when it comes time for whatever the new video streaming media experience thingy, Apple will be able to truly reach a mass market, like they did with the iPod. One of the points behind iTMS' gajillion songs from the beginning of time until now is to appeal to those who don't really like today's offerings. As my financial advisor mentioned when I bought some AAPL back in mid-October (already a 25% return...wow), there are a lot of people out there that still don't have an iPod, and most of them are over 40. True or not, she had a point.

:D
Wow! Some young punk just called me old!

Clips?

I've got to put my vote in with the folks that think this is becoming a major rip-off. Knight Ridder for $2 a pop? That's a bit much, just to pretend I'm a kid again... At least for KR though, a season costs the same as a DVD.

I got really excited to see some classic TV up there-- Hitchcock in particular, until I checked Amazon and realized I could buy the DVD for half the cost of downloading.

I thought Leno and O'Brien would make perfect additions-- their shows are so topical that they certainly don't carry value much beyond the air date so it makes sense to get some additional revenue from the folks at work who hear they missed a great interview or something. $2 for a 3 minute clip? That's just insulting.

I appreciate that the material is commercial free, but they really need to keep things in perspective. At least compare them to each other and to DVD sales. Repackaging the DVD in lower quality format and without the physical items and images doesn't justify doubling the cost.

What I see is the TV networks doing what the music labels have been trying to do: bask in the iPod glow and reap the riches that come with being hip. I'm fed up with the less for more attitude. There's this great new marketplace opening up-- do something cool!.

This has the burn fast and bright model all over it. 3mil in 2 months? Depending on how much of that was music videos, I'd expect a pretty steep decline once the novelty wears off.

So far the best use I've found for the iPod is carrying around all of the "making of" features from movies. Much better to watch in little bits...

Start with the miniseries. It precedes season 1 and you won't want to miss it.

Thanks for the info chabig and everyone else who answered my question. I just decided to suck it up and buy the miniseries to see what all the fuss was about. Now I understand. I can't say that all of the characters are all that great, but there are some that stood out. The plot is terrific, and the production values are suberb, I was picturing something like a deep space 10 and was very plesantly suprised. I think I'm going to get season 1 now.

:D
I wanna see AirWolf, A-Team, Star Trek: Next Generation, Dif'rent Strokes, and we cannot forget Chips... ah, the good ole days...

Where's the Anime? Robotech, Voltron, Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Thundar the Barbarian?

Hopefully they'll start to bring out better content for the UK. But I hate the way iTunes deals with videos. I think that needs to be fixed first.

I think that the video content will roll out like the iTMS. They'll get the US site all video'd up, and the start negotiating with other countries with a working model as an example. Plus the figures from sales...
Although we may see something sooner over here in Blighty if the Fox negotiations go well we may see some results on the shows that Sky has (Stargate, all the Star Treks, BSG, Simpsons, Scrubs etc) although it may be made tricky by the fact they are further licensed to terrestrial channels (Five, Channel Four, BBC2). Anyone know how that would work?

Like all of them :)

Well, no, definitely not all of them - I was thinking more like Seasons 3-7 or so. Although there have been a few gems in recent years, Simpsons has definitely gone down hill and needs to end - it's nowhere near the level it was at 10 years ago and it's just old and tired now.

There's quite a few more good ones than that too, don't forget... ;)

I know there's plenty more cool Simpsons episodes but those ones are my all time favourite episodes along with the "Frank Grimes" and "The Monkey" episodes.

And while they're at it can Apple add some of those cool'n'axed series like Birds of Prey, Dark Skies, American Gothic, The Outer Limits and Night Vision to name a few  They rock and you can get them on DVD........

"You dont just download music from iTunes, you strap yourself in and feel the G's".

The Office

The top 10 downloaded TV shows today has 5 episodes of "Lost," two episodes of "Desperate Housewives" and three episodes of "The Office."

I'm happy to see "The Office" take off. Shows that have a small audience but that people might be resistant to start watching without catching up on some of the older episodes could benefit substantially from TV downloads.

I read somewhere that the TV ratings of "Housewives" and "Lost" have not suffered from the iTunes downloads. With all the downloading (iTunes) and time-shifting (DVRs), the TV business model may be headed for a serious overhall. I'll be curious to see more research on how the downloads change viewing patterns.

EDIT:

A story mentioning the ratings bump for "Lost" and "Housewives":

CNET figured it out...apparently, the shows that are in the iTunes Music Store are PRODUCED and DISTRIBUTED by the same company. West Wing, however, is produced by Warner and distributed by NBC, and because these two companies apparently haven't worked out a deal on how to split profits, West Wing cannot be put in the Music Store.

Warner has a pretty big roster and catalog. "Nip Tuck," "ER," "Veronica Mars," "Everwood," "Ellen Degeneres Show," "Gilmore Girls," "Two and a Half Men," "Friends," "Smallville," "Cold Case," "George Lopez." That will be a big haul for iTunes when it happens.

Fox produces and distributes "American Idol" and "24," which both have their season premieres the week after Macworld. I think that will be the one of the big announcements at Macworld, which is starting to look huge.

The John Lennon reference in the Macworld press release made me wonder if the Beatles catalog may be on its way. The CNET story (http://news.com.com/2100-1027-5228914.html) a while back made it sound like EMI and the Beatles' people want to get the catalog online. A guy can dream.

EDIT:

NBC Universal's Jeff Zucker says, ""You are going to see a series of announcements in the coming weeks."

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117934071?categoryid=1009&cs=1&s=h&p=0

I got one word for Macworld: Ginormous.

We could be getting our first Mactel, a DVR-ish Mac mini, AirPort Express AV, Fox TV content, more NBC TV content, maybe movies, maybe The Beatles, iLife '06. Holy crap!

Welcome aboard :) Galactica's post-miniseries seasons do not disappoint. They pick up again just days after the miniseries ending.

I agree that some of the characters, while well-acted, aren't entirely "likable"--but still have good stories. The characters I DO like are mainly Adama, Roslin, Baltar, and Boomer (no spoilers, but she has an interesting season 1 storyline, to say the least). And for some reason Chief Tyrol and the chain-smoking medical doctor :D A lot of minor characters get roles that keep growing. By season 2, there a LOT of well fleshed-out characters to work with.

But to "stray on topic"... I wish iTunes sold them in widescreen, but here we have a living example of how iTunes could potentially help a show's rating. Someone checks out a show on iTunes because it's easy, and then might continue watching it on TV when new seasons appear. (The same can happen with rentals of course--if you can FIND the TV show you want at the video store.)

I would have chosen to buy a black iPod video instead of a Nano, if either the original OuterLimits or Twilight Zone were offered, especially if it had been bundled with a limited edition iPod.

Even though I don't like smoking, for some reason I just loved the "chain smoking doctor" character when I first saw him light up around a patient.:D

I also like Boomer, Baltar, Number Six, Adama, and even Col. Tigh.

When does Canada get TV shows??
NBC has to add Seinfeld, they need the complete series for a low price like $150. They should also sell Olympic content, imagin every event from future games like Beijing Vancouver and London.

You can't display that resolution on a screen that small.

yeah, but maybe bigger screens are coming ( flipping 180 degrees ), or...

...wait a minute; looks like today's reports of best gadget for christmas see digital cameras on top of the iPod sales; what about...

...a camPod ?

i mean 480x360 is not much harder to DL, and resolution would scale better to TV screens, and that would give a 1.728Mpix camera capable iPod for making your own video podcasts and taking pictures !

i can see the commercial use of such an upgrade, and since Steevo is looking for money first ( no problem with me ); why not ?
