Yes. This thing could change the face of consumer tech completely. It'll be huge.

Apple has a habit of making products you never knew you wanted.

like market dud ATV?

seriously, why apple models islate in the iPhone route instead of Mac-OSX route is beyond me. It will be another microscopic market product, financially okay, maybe even good, while makes no ripples in the computer market after first month.

a Giant iPhone? or giant iPT?

Things works well on a smartphone is quite different from things work well on an expected computer.

don't get the whole tablet thing

Sorry Apple, I really have no idea who is really going to buy your tablet thing for >800$?! Another posh, useless gimmick?!
To me it's even more bogus than getting a MacBook Air! :D

A netbook variation of the MacBook for maybe 600$ would sell like crazy and would make more sense.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

I don't think there is much of a market for it. I know that netbooks are popular right now but I kind of think they are going to fade out very quickly as PDA's and smart devices become more powerful. The tablet just seems like an oversized Iphone or Ipod touch. I doubt I will ever use one.

Rising prices and better alternatives may mean curtains for netbooks.

And in other news:

Apple tablet computer rumour sends shares up

Apple shares have jumped another 1% as speculation grows that it will launch a new touch-screen computer.

So, who knows? ;)

I doubt it.

I've got an iMac.
I've got an iPhone.
I've got an iPod Shuffle.
I've got a netbook.
I've got another powerful PC desktop.
I've got a Nintendo DS Lite with an R4 card for games.

Either I need to get with the program or I just don't see the niche for this device.

Some may say as an eReader, but the Kindle 2/DX is top dog by far in that market (as small as it is right now), and they are half/a fourth the price of what this tablet is rumored to be.

Again, if the measuring stick is "a computer" then one could be missing the point of this prospective consumer device.

Given recent history, it's likely that a more powerful mobile processor, more memory, wireless connectivity and touch screen consumer applications will do the heavy lifting marketing for the device. I don't think it's aimed to replace keyboard based laptops.

I am looking at it differently...

For a while I was thinking who would be the real target market for a tablet. Not that easy to type on etc, basically not that versatile. Then I thought Apple could revolutionize the tablet by making it a netbook. What I mean by that is the form factor of a netbook not the computing power. What if this tablet is basically a removable touch screen that snaps in to a keyboard base giving it the appearance of a Macbook air. If you look at the bezel of any mac laptop it is basically a screen snapped into a hinging connector. I think this form factor could incorporate all of the "pros" of a tablet while limiting its "cons".

But who the hell knows this is Apple we are talking about.

What you are talking about is a different configuration of a dockable computer. Apple has done computer docks since 1916. It knows how to do dockable computers. The "iSlate" will not be a dockable computer.

1916...did Apple computer's even exist then? I'd love to know what the 1916 iPod looked like.

Ask and ye shall receive. Attached are pictures of the 1916 Mac Mini and iPod :)

Sorry... couldn't resist.

You need to get with the program. Soon enough we'll be able to read the books/magazines on it, watch TV programming, and use another 100k applications that will be significantly more feature rich than what is available for iPhone. :)

This has a potential to have the same impact on visual media as iPod had on the way we consume audio. Among other things.

And how do you know all this?

We only have rumours at present, the real thing may not do everything you list or may do even more.

You forget that in the lead up to the announcement of the first iPod, the rumours were suggesting an updated Newton. There might not even be a tablet, so let's wait and see what's coming before we get too excited.

Kindle DX (which is the 10 inch kindle) is $489, I havent seen many (anyone?) guess that the Tablet is going for $988 to $1976, and the Kindle is sold at a fairly good profit (as for that matter is the Ipod Touch from Apple). I expect the Tablet will be in the cost neighborhood of the DX and sell really well, and I'll probably buy one for reading books, watching video, etc.

Based on the reviews (without actually seeing one), I think it *has* to have a "killer" application to make people buy it just for that unique functionality.

I know it is coming but if what you say is true (the read books/magazines and watch TV, the apps don't lure me yet) then I will buy it but not after I have re-kitted my home new Mac's and Time Capsule :)

It'll help if it's a bit ruggedized.

A slate for use at the breakfast table and around the home, needs to survive spilled drinks and accidental kid encounters.

While that would be revolutionary for Apple's design folks, I wouldn't hold out such hopes. While Microsoft has no qualms about letting little Kylie hunt & peck on the internet unsupervised . . . Apple desgins are decidedly "grown up" to the point of being form over substance. Are there many Apple products that don't seem to suffer from chronic thermal mishaps? ;)

We could start a betting pool over how many liquid sensors an Apple slate tablet would have.

And let's not forget their recent patent application about using all the electronic sensors to record if you abuse (e.g. drop or overheat) a device, in order to automatically void the warranty.

The better bet would be the amount of time from the retail release . . . to the date of the first lawsuit filing that the device is too easily scratched. :D

Apple owners do seem to be more concerned about their devices being "objects d' art" than tools to be used in the normal course. However, that's not uncommon behavior among consumers of higher end consumer products such as cameras, firearms, automobiles, particularly when the concept of "collectable" is raised.

I own a MacBook
I own an iMac
I own an iPhone
I own an iPod

From what I have seen, I would love one if it were a tablet Mac, but if its just a giant iPhone, I wouldn't bother with one. Where would a giant iPhone fit in my plethora of iDevices? I do not see how an Apple tablet would fit the needs of my lifestyle, and it seems very gimmicky to me.

A tablet Mac would however, be very nice, especially for Adobe Illustrator work.

I own a MBP, iMac, 3GS and iPod Classic. And I WANT the Tablet as long as it has some ground-breaking features.

I'd use it if it came with decent storage space (32gb+) and the ability for apps to access it. A plus would also be easy bluetooth sharing with others devices.
