I own an iMac, a 10" netbook, and have a work-provided MBA and iPhone.

At home, my iMac is the most comfortable to use for prolonged periods of time due to its screen size, keyboard and mouse. The MBA, which is my primary machine coupled with a cinema display at the office, is great for its portability around the house, but less comfortable ergonomically sitting on the couch or in a chair without a table (the netbook being even worse comfort-wise). The iPhone is of course excellent for all that it does regardless of where I'm at, however, is not pleasant for long periods of use when there are other options. (I have wrist, hand and eye discomfort using it.)

I think a slate-style tablet would serve as a better around the house portable device where I'm mostly just reading something and have little typing to do. It would be more comfortable to hold, navigate and view compared to an iPhone. It certainly wouldn't replace either my iMac or MBA though.

If I were going back to school and didn't have my MBA, I would opt for a netbook because of the keyboard, although I always wished there was a more friendly way to take down notes such as drawings when I was in class. I think traditional tablet notebooks really failed at combining keyboard input and more free-hand note taking, especially for education and business purposes. I'm anticipating this Apple tablet will bring all of this to a new level, and am excited to see it.

For me it all depends on what Apple actually releases. I have a Tablet PC, and while nice, it is fairly limited. I get way more functionality out of my MBP than I ever did on my Tablet PC. While I'm very interested to see what Apple will release, it is doubtful that I would buy one.

Question: Would I use it?
Answer: Yes

Question: What for?
Answer: 1) movies, tv shows while on exercise bike; 2) movies, games, etc. during air travel; 3) books & magazines; 4) Misc. apps yet to be created; 5) Use while in bed (as opposed to laptop that I'm using now)

Owner of: macbook pro, ipod touch, imac

I would never use it. I can't stand touchscreen. It's awful.

I would agree with you that touchscreens are indeed awful - - in every case but one - - the iPhone. With it's immediate and accurate response and intuitive gestures, it is a true pleasure to interact with. I can't wait for that experience to be scaled up on the tablet.

+1, and yes I would use it.
Personally I think something along the lines of what everyone is speculating it to be would be perfect for digital photography. 10 inch screen with fast and responsive photo viewing would be stellar.

I would also use it daily for school, not so much word processing or photoshoping but just doing emails and surfing the web to kill some time... mostly social networking to tell you the truth.

Im sure apple with throw in some of their personal touchs and really make this thing stand out from every thing else on the market.

if it is everything everyone expects it to be than it will be sitting in my on my desk 6 months after it comes out (not for bugs but because I need to save money :)

This would replace my 2008 mac book if it has at least a dual core processor and can play HD video along with bluetooth and wifi. If this is tied to any carrier, snowballs chance in hell. Would be cool if it could chop up video for editing but transfer to my mac pro for the rest of the work. That and small photo touch ups.

I'm in the market for a 13" MacBook Pro and was planning on buying a new Arrandale when they get announced (perhaps on the 27th?)

I'd use it for work, meaning, I'd probably plug it into a larger screen and bluetooth keyboard/mouse in clamshell mode.

But what if the iSlate was capable of doing that?

I know most people expect that it will be running a spruced-up version of the iphone OS, but what if it's running a tablet-ized version of OS X?

If it had decent performance (e.g. the power to browse the web, edit documents, and perhaps run the statistical software I occasionally use) and the ability to run programs designed for OS X (apart from hardcore games and other especially demanding tasks), along with the ability to interface with a larger screen and a keyboard/mouse, then it would really be ideal for a lot of people. I know I'd rather carry around a 10" tablet than a 13" laptop if they are both capable of doing what I want.

The musings above are probably unrealistic and wildly off-base. I do expect I'll be ordering a new 13" MacBook Pro on the 27th or soon after, not an iSlate. But I've got an open mind and will definitely be watching with interest.

Absolutely. I do a lot of tabletop gaming, and carrying a nice slate PC to read full color PDF's from would be a vast improvement over carrying ~30lbs of books. Table space is at a premium already, and I've found notebooks PCs to be incredibly unweildy and unsuited to the task.

It might fit in a handbag. Laptops don't (depending on the handbag).

No use to me, but it could be a killer feature to half the world's population.

I'm hopefully getting a new toy soon.
Thinking about both the Macbook Air or the Tablet.
So I wait and see what :apple: will release.

Maybe a cool thing they could include into the tablet. The possibilaty to use it as a remote. Ditch your creston and have a "Apple Islate" instade.
Some hifi brands already use the Ipod Touch as a remote, so maybe in the future the "Islate"?

Sorry if I made some mistakes in my post in the English language, I'm a native dutch speaker :D

There's always the man purse...

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it had:
3G, 802.11n, bluetooth, GPS, magnetometer, decent 3D, video playback, stylus for note taking / drawing, web browsing, both front and back facing cameras, microphone, PDF support, and a version of the Kindle app.

Needs to weight < 2 lbs and have an 8 hour battery life.

Not sure if I want 3G built in. This would lock it to a carrier. Instead, have a USB port so you can buy a USB stick from one of the carriers to use as they do with laptops. Locking it to a specific carrier will kill its chances of selling allot of units. This is one of the reasons I don't own a iPhone because its locked to crappy AT&T.

That's a good idea.

After owning several iPads/iPad Pros over the years, the iPad has become my computer of choice. It’s definitely NOT a large iPhone. There are some key differences in iOS on iPads that separate them (the dock, split view, drag and drop, picture in picture.) But yes, the OS is similar enough to make that comparison.

There’s certainly a learning curve to become proficient working on an iPad. But I’ve been able to pick it up and actually prefer it.

Unfortunately, there are some tasks that I simply cannot do nearly as quickly as I can on a traditional PC (spreadsheets, photoshop.)

It’s funny to see what people thought about the iPad back then. :D
Basically same as now.

Because it's not the same with my current workflow, iPad needs to change to adapt to my current workflow, including to accept a USB 3G modem.

Instead, iOS devices moved on its own way to change the industry.
