No way to delete the post so I erased the info since it didn't fix the issue, MacPaw CleanMYMacX has a way to reset safari (a little convoluted but chat talked me through it) and so far Safari is back to the way it was before!
A lot easier than doing a clean install, plus you can root through and delete un needed crap.
Well worth the $35 for the app, IMO

CleanMyMacX
It's possible that the option to restore Safari is in the free version so you can try it first, they will give you an option to upgrade if it doesn't.
Follow these instructions to reset safari after doing the scan.

CleanMyMac -> go to CleanMyMac X Preferences -> Ignore list -> Uninstaller -> Disable "Ignore system apps" -> go to the Uninstaller module and locate Safari for a reset.

When you are in the Uninstaller module, please hold Control button on your keyboard and click on Safari, then click on Select "Safari" for Reset

Hi Steve,

So glad you are persevering and getting it sorted! :)

Many thanks for the encyclopaedic detail!
Thanks, I wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone else, this was a real pain in the yoktibay.
All Apple has to do it bring back the Reset Safari option, why did they take it away in the first place is the question.
The second question is why Apple Customer Service didn't think of it.

There is still a delay at times after clicking on Bookmarks, but no spinning beachball and Safari itself is faster than it was before doing the reset.

This worked! I had way too many bookmarks. I was getting that beachball every time I went to my bookmarks. I backed my bookmarks up to my desktop and deleted most of them. It worked! No more beachball. Good luck! Try going to Bookmarks, edit bookmarks and clean them up. Then reboot your computer.

I've noticed similar and other quirks leading to issues with Safari. The beachball does happen once in awhile but my latest annoyance is dealing with F-book. Sometimes I am in a section reading and a bar near the top will come up saying what I am looking at is taking significant memory then kick me out of that page. It is beyond annoying.

I tried that before the reset and it didn't work for me.
There is still a delay after clicking on the bookmark menu, and I've cleaned up my OS using CleanMyMac so this is clearly a Big Sur issue that Apple is ignoring

Sorry, that sucks.

Any chance you tried looking in the console to see if there are interesting messages when you experience a delay? It can be a daunting task, unless you're lucky. Certainly type "Safari" in the top search field while monitoring.

I'd recommend making a specific support request with Apple Care. Get someone on the phone to work with you. It really isn't enough to put the problem into a support forum and hope it gets some priority. I've generally found tier 1 support to be very bad. But, if you press for an answer, it might get to tier 2.

On the other hand, they'll invariably start by asking you to restore the operating system (which is quick and doesn't overwrite your stuff), but it's annoying when you know it's not going to help.

I'll try calling, but you would think that in the forum it would be easier to see that multiple people are replying that they have the same issue and that the Apple Rep would be required to tell Apple about it.
Instead the Apple Rep came onto the forum, suggested some nonsense and then we never saw him again.
Maybe I'll call them tomorrow and see what happens

It seems to be getting worse the longer I use safari. Some pages are also choppy when scrolling. I restart and clear the cache every so often now, but it's getting more and more frustrating

I tried the CleanMyMac Safari reset. It did fix it, for a time. It returned. macOS 11.3 and Safari Version 14.1 (16611.1.21.161.3). It doesn't seem directly related to the number of bookmarks, because I had the same number.

So there is something going on that's mucking up Safari over time. I'll try trimming my bookmarks.

It came back for me too. I'm going to create folders and separate my bookmarks that way but I don't think it will help. There is a real issue here and Apple ignoring it is really pissing me off

Has anyone with this problem diagnosed or fixed successfully - where the issue didn't come back (such as after using Reset and CleanMyMac X)?
Safari Version 14.1.1 (16611.2.7.1.4)
System Version: macOS 11.4 (20F71)
Kernel Version: Darwin 20.5.0

I tried both and it helped a little.
However, in the last 2 days the Bookmark Menu has been working with no issues, I have no idea why

It's still the same for me. I regularly clear the cache and restart, but nearly every other time I access the bookmarks menu I'm hit with the beach ball

I always get the spinning beach ball when browsing the History menu. It has been like this since Big Sur. In Catalina it doesn't happen. So annoying.
