Lmao legally? There are no legal ramifications here. I did not sign a contact when I told her I'd watch it.

Uh oh if you are from CA oral contracts hold in that state (at least according to Court TV)....so the other poster is probably correct about the "legally" thing : /

How far it would get is another story.

You have to be a pretty big tool to make up your own story and STILL come off looking so shabby!

The OP's story may be BS but I've learned a lot reading from others' posts. Kudos to helpful MacRumors members!

Yes, buy her a new one using the cash from the iPad you just returned that you used to want to marry...

But I have to wonder if maybe you stole it when she left, and this thread is just a guilty conscience at work trying to justify your actions.

Maybe you really miss your iPad and saw an opportunity to get another one by stealing. Look at your sig... That's just weird, man.

That was the first thing I thought when I saw WHO started this thread.

In any case, this dude's got ISSUES.

I assumed now that high school was back in session we'd be free from these knuckleheaded posts - wrong again.

I'm not going to call BS on this story...yet.
I doubt I would leave my iPad with another person while I went somewhere.
And if someone left it with me, I would have taken it with me if I did go somewhere. And return it.

If this story is true, you do owe her a new iPad.
It was stupid of her to leave it with someone she barely knew. (Assuming that you guys barely knew each other)
But, it was even stupider of you to leave it there after you made a verbal agreement that you would watch the iPad so it didn't get stolen. But you didn't watch it.
And it did get stolen.

Your fault.

Every thread this guy starts is less believable than the last one. It's getting pretty obnoxious.

Oh, come on... They are fun to read. Give the OP a break.

Let it run it's course.

* Sold iPad
* iPad Stolen
* Girl's iPad Stolen
* Wil Wheaton took my iPad
* Bigfoot stepped on my iPad
* Aliens probed my iPad
.
.
.
* Blah blah, done.

It will blow over in a couple months.

Girl gets up and leaves iPad in full view,
You get up and walk out leaving iPad in full view.

Then someone else gets up and walks out with it?

I would be damn sure that there would be several people in the room that would have also noticed the chick with the iPad and quite clearly who took it.

If it was you, then I'd say that the game is up.

EDIT: Cartaphilus seemed to beat me to the punch.

Actually, there could be. Depending on the exact language you used, it could be construed that the iPad was in your legal control, and by losing it you effectively committed a tort called conversion.

Someone is taking contracts. Are you a 1L? If you're bored I would grab a property hornbook and look up bailment.

At most you could owe her the replacement cost of the iPad (with possible interest).

:eek::eek::eek::eek: Interest? Get out of here. If she went with trover i fail to see how she'd be able to recover interest.

That probably would not apply here since there wasn't really a contract. The OP didn't get anything out of this which means its hard to delineate what offer he agreed to when he said he'd look after the iPad.

Or it could have been a bailment and would not require consideration. There is more to law than contracts.

* This is no legal advice

EDIT: Cartaphilus seemed to beat me to the punch.

Unfortunately, she learned a valuable lesson. Probably, never again will she leave something that expensive in the care of a stranger. Obviously, she should have taken it with her. But, we all make mistakes.

That said, you told her you would watch it. To me it's pretty clear, you should replace it.

I am not so sure of the validity of this story. Your signature is odd, as well as your lol response. Also, you make no mention of either telling your prof or informing security.

Wow... I was reading through this and could not believe that you were the FIRST to address the stupidity of the girl. I get that it sucks to bring everything with you all the time, but WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD. She learned a valuable lesson while in college, and unfortunately it cost her ALMOST as much as a day of classes.

lol So a girl entrusted you, a complete stranger, to "keep an eye on her iPad?" Did flags not go off in anyone else's head of how stupid this sounds? I do not let my iPad, laptop, phone, keys or wallet out of my site. EVER. iPad is clearly a hot item right now and she left in in a room full of immature, questionably moral, BROKE students? But NEVER FEAR..... She left it in the hands of the OP who sounds like a completely honest, trust-worthy, stand up guy!!!! Cough Cough DOUCHE BAG! Cough Cough I don't even know the OP but just based off of this story, his signature, and his other posts, I would not trust him to watch a pickle, much less my iPad!

OP - This story sounds all too convenient for you after your post about parting with your iPad. If the story is in fact true, then leaving it out of your site was a real douche bag move, but unlike the other posters, I really do not blame you, or think you owe her anything. She trusted an expensive piece of technology to someone she didn't know, and that alone puts the blame on her. She should have thrown it in her bag and carried it with her to the bathroom.

Having said that, I personally think this whole story is BS, and that the OP just writes random posts hoping to get a reaction from people, but that's just my opinion. However, if the OP is not making this up, I think the girl would be smart to try to catch the OP in the act, because it sounds to me like he took it. haha Maybe that is the ipad that he sold and was okay with it! hahahaha Also, if you had an iPad, you know all of the possible ways to track it and would not need to ask.

Sorry for the long post, but must add one more thought. Offering a reward when you KNOW it was stolen from somewhere is USELESS. Like the thief is going to put them in a position where other people would know he stole it. The thief is already long gone with it, and has either kept or sold it. My guess is the offered reward would not be near as much as the actual iPad. (otherwise it would be more simple to just go buy a new one)

Last thought for Rhinosrcool - INDEED! Go Vikings and Twins! Sadly I think Vikings had their chance last year and blew it but I am still pumped for the season. This is however the year for the Twins, and I do not think they will blow it. I see another World Series coming to the great state of Minnesota!

It's funny how I originally read the post as "Ethic Literature class" instead of Ethnic.

Either way, someone in that room clearly stole it, she was stupid to leave it there in the first place. I would never trust my iPad to be guarded by anyone. If I was her I would have just waited until class was over to go or throw my iPad in my bag and take it with me.

You might be right about the Vikes, but I'm still going give them the benefit of the doubt. As for the Twins, I wish Morneau was back, but we have had a lot of guys step up like Thome, Valencia, and Cuddy. We'll see....

go unto her tommorrow and be like "bitch get in the kitchen and make me something with meat in!!!" then get her to satisfy your meat after she has brought you your meat based products.

It's not yours so you are good. She will cry and never talk to u again but that's why man made Kleenex and god made billions of other people for you to talk to. The most u could do is make an effort to look for it. But if you or your parents are rich, just get her another one.

After checking the op's previous threads/posts, probably didn't happen at all.
Wow, he almost had me this time. Gotta remember to check the usernames on new threads.

Let's see... ah there it is! Upper left is "User CP" > second from bottom options is "Buddy / Ignore Lists".

Whoops, almost typed into the wrong box. But my MacRumors forums are now thankfully 85% less inane. Yay! :D
