I realize this has probably been asked many times but what is the consensus for good ad blockers on Safari? Something not too resources heavy. Thanks.

A great free one is Adblock one. Doesn't seem to drain the battery or system resources. Im currently testing out 1blocker since it has a lot more features than Adblock one. Both are great options.

There is no consensus. Since most people are loyal to their favourite, you will get the same discordant answers as in previous threads.

My preference is Adguard for Mac which works with all browsers and related apps. (e.g. mail and news readers). Just try some and see what you like.

Just got an email from Setapp that they were dropping AdGuard. "This app communicates with the servers based in Russia, and in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we exclude it from the list of our apps."

Please, no political statements. I'm just passing along what I received.

I can well understand that, Setapp is based in Ukraine (as is AdGuard's main support team). I have mixed feelings.

According to Adguard's web site and twitter feed, many of its developers are in Moscow, but most support (including filter updates) is from Ukraine. The company is registered in Cyprus and so subject to EU rules and regulations.

I would be interested in the evidence for the AdGuard app connecting to Russia. As far as I can tell the app communicates with servers in America to get filter lists, etc. The adguard.com web site is delivered from America. Though both may just be Cloudflare. Public code is on GitHub. I will explore further.

[How do I just give a reddit link without displaying the content here?]

Code:

Adguard app doesn't, but easy to see why Setapp organisation thinks it does. See https://kb.adguard.com/en/general/local-adguard

As part of its clever tricks, Adguard app inserts a script which is loaded from local.adguard.org. Now this address translates (via DNS) into 176.103.133.77 which is a 'magic' address. When the browser makes a connection to this IP address, Adguard app intercepts it and processes it locally. So there is no real connection to 176.103.133.77. But right now this is an 'unfortunate' choice for address as a whois lookup tells you it is in Moscow!

So with a simple scanning of network traffic (between browser and Adguard app) there appears to be a connection to Moscow, but a more detailed analysis should (I have not tested it) show that this never leaves your computer.

I hope the two teams are able to sort this out, but I suspect they have more important things to worry about.

Im using from long time ADB+, 1blocker and AdGuard. All in the same time.
And that's because i couldnt decide which is better. 😂
Now seeing this thread, a question came into my mind: is there a problem/interference in using more than one ad blocker?

Might be something to take up with Setapp. I know they are pushing apps from developers in Ukraine, so don't know why they are making an exception here. Maybe they are unaware (which doesn't seem likely) or maybe it's just the connection with Russia. I would think that would be something users would want to be "guarded" from. No clue!

I use 1Blocker, which is very customizable and has worked well. It does have an annual subscription of about $15/year
1Blocker base in Russia Fed. Server as well 1blocker.com - nothing loads for me since my network block everything from Russia.

Also a Russian developer ( S a l a v a t K h a n o v ) for 1Blocker.

Hi guys, I thought I'd try posting here rather than starting a new thread straight away.

1Blocker isn't blocking YouTube adverts successfully any more on an M1 Mac- which adblockers (if any) are able to block YouTube ads still?

Some mentioned before me to be using wipr + vinegar. I didn't know vinegar till I read that comment. I decided to give vinegar a try and thanks to this person I now watch Youtube without ads. So now I'm currently using wipr + vinegar. Give vinegar a try. I'm not able to say if it's compatible with your adblocker, but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't. You can search more info about vinegar and its compatibilities and incompatibilities on the Internet if you need. BTW Vinegar is available for download in Apple Store.
Hope this can help.
