So back and forth I go.....
I tell myself over and over that the :apple:Watch isn't a good watch, unlike the pebble, which IMO is much better as a watch, and is what I'm getting for Christmas.
Common sense will likely prevail and I'll just get the iPad Air 2 (or mini 3) instead of the :apple:watch.

So as hard as not getting it may be, what do you guys think the best argument is for NOT buying the :apple:Watch? The biggest thing I can think of is waiting for the second generation.
What do you guys think?

My argument is pure and simple, at least for me.
Its more money that I'm willing to spend on a smart watch that lacks GPS, and is not water resistant. Basically for my lifestyle, I have no need for it.

Fitbit Surge, which is due out in early 2015, on the other hand, is much better meeting my needs.

As for convincing you, I don't think I can, only you know what's best for you.

The water resistance is a huge deal for me too; I really want to be able to use my smartwatch to control music in the shower, or when washing dishes. I also want to see the time wherever I am, at the beach, in the pool, wherever. The Pebble does a great job of this.

...and is not water resistant....

Just a slight correction, it is water resistant. We just don't know (and may never) the exact IP rating yet. Maybe you meant 'waterproof' as is in ATM 5 which it won't be.

Hopefully it will be IPx6 rated.

Yes that is what I meant; waterproof.

The two biggest turn-offs for me are:
1. All of the designs look similar and like sport watches to me. Not that I think the Apple watch looks bad, I think it looks quite nice, but I wouldn't wear it as a "fine watch".
2. Battery life lasting only a day (or less).

I guess the biggest question I have now is, should I wait for the second gen Watch? Will it be a lot better, and will it be worth the wait, enough to skip the excitement of owning a first gen product?

Cause I'll be honest, my iPad mini 1 is showing its age, and that Air 2 would be really nice.....

No one can answer for you but for me the answer is no. I'll probably sell my 1st gen Sport for about $150 and then buy the 2ed gen. If one year that's about 60¢ per day to not miss out.

I think they will offer an upgrade path which will encourage users on the fence to adopt the first generation watch. As Julien mentioned, Apple products retain their value, so even resale and upgrading will be reasonable.

Apple has said that you can wash dishes with it. While they have said you can't shower with it, they have said it is fine for the rain. You could reasonably put the watch on a shelf in the shower that doesn't get direct spray and likely it will be fine. As they have cleared it for dish washing and rain, they will replace it if it becomes water damaged as long as it's warrantied and you tell them it happened during those covered uses. If you have to use it in the pool or ocean, then it may not be the watch for you.

As your still deciding, you should probably at least wait until the Apple is released to see it's capability before picking up the Pebble. If the first few weeks sales are strong, you know it will encourage developers to support it, but I think developer aps will be strong even upon release. I think there will be a lot more capabilities once the aWatch is out; we've only heard a teaser pre-promotion of the device. You may decide you would rather have the Apple even though you won't have access underwater.

If history repeats, the second gen will be a MUCH better product. All you have to do is look at the MacBook Pro CoreDuo to Core2Duo, the aluminum Apple TV to the Hockey Puck, iPhone to iPhone 3G, iPad to iPad 2, MacBook Air to MacBook Air Gen 2, and I am sure others I am missing. All of these were products with promise in their first gen, but also major flaws. All of them became great products in their second iteration, and made huge leaps over their original counterparts.

Unless you are like Julien above, and are will to take a bath on the original just to replace it a year later, I would wait for gen 2. Not only will the product be better, but you will get an idea of the support it will receive from dev and Apple, and if the market is even interested in smart watches enough to make them something companies are willing to put resources into making.

regardless if it cured cancer $400 is too much for a watch for someone who hasn't used one and hasn't had a need for it in 12+ years. I outgrew my Batman Fossil watch in 8th grade and haven't looked back since.

It also looks like it doesn't do anything without the iPhone.
Too expensive $400 for the cheapest one
1st generation is going to have a crappy battery life and ton of glitches

I am willing to get one in the 3rd+ generation that becomes water resistant, better battery and much cheaper.

Do you have to pay extra for the 4g to use it?

i guess my biggest reason for NOT getting the iwatch would have to be it doesn't do anything like text, email, phone calls without the iphone near it. and the screen is just too small for reading text and email. and since i already have the gear solo that can do pretty much everything my phone can do like text, email and phone calls without my phone being near me or even on. with my gear solo i feel like a true life dick tracy. now if i get the iwatch i will just fill like a dick without the tracy which has me thinking why the HELL would i want to go backwards?:p

Pretty sure if it cured cancer anyone with a functioning brain would get it for whatever amount of money they had haha.

Anyway, it is water resistant, what we don't know is how water resistant. It starts at $349 by the way, and it's not going to get a lot cheaper even if they did decide to drop the price at some point (of the new iterations that is).

How ever you want to call it. I want to be able to use the watch, while running even in a driving rain storm, also be able to shower with it on. I want a sturdy product that doesn't break with the simplest uses.

Let me rephrase that I don't want to waste money on a gadget that I have no use for. The iPhone is a gadget, yet its been incredibly useful (at least for me).

Agreed and I expect it (which is assume:D) will come in at least IPx5. This will cover you. And if IPx6 it will be safe for all except submersion (swimming). IPx6 is 30 minutes at 1 meter.

According to reports the weak spot is the speaker/mic.

However if you don't want to carry your iPhone for GPS then it's a no go. I expect (assume again) GPS in gen 2, so hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

So obviously the second gen will be better. And really the only reason I can think of getting the first gen is simply for the cool geeky factor of owning a first gen product, and showing it to people. It just seems so cool! To think of walking into an Apple Store a few weeks after the Watch comes out, and seeing the watch and using it hands on: but choosing instead to get the ipad, seems really hard; I just know it is something I'll want.
So is it worth it to get the first gen for these reasons alone???

I think there are a few factors to consider here.

Does it do what you want it to do? If not, don't get it.

I've bought the iPad, the iPhone, all on launch day. I don't regret it one bit. The time I spent with those devices were awesome. Especially the iPhone.

That being said, I do plan on getting a watch, because I just am thinking about it as "a watch". People spend $1,000's on watches. I can afford to spend $500 on the SS Milanese Loop one. And as long as in my brain, it's a watch, I can wrap my head around that. LOL.

I actually bought the pebble thinking it would hold me over until the 2nd gen apple watch. I took it back a week later. You can't reply to texts or emails. You can't use the pedometer apps because if you close it you lose your data. Even though it's waterproof I always take my watch off in the shower. All it does is display your texts. I always ended up pulling my phone out and responding to the text anyway. Not worth the 100 bucks in my opinion.
