I believe the answer to both of those questions is a resounding yes. Contact the Apple store you plan to pick up from and see if they can offer a definite answer.

Just stopped by my local Apple Store. While I don't think either of the two workers I spoke with were filled with confidence with their answers, they both agreed that "the point of pre-ordering is so we reserve a unit for you, even if you order it online."

interesting dilemma.
I have a BB gift card with $500 on it.
I intend to pre-order two 16GB iphones.
my total cost when I go to BB on June 24th will be $400 + $32 tax + $36 activation fee for two (this is on a family plan where both are eligible) = $468

Question is, when I go to bestbuy tomorrow, can I use my existing gift card to pre-order or do I have to buy another $50 gift card per phone? if yes, that would be a shame

Question 2: if I go in person, will bestbuy let me pre-order just my line or will they let me place an order for my wife's phone also.
when it's time to go collect the phones, we intend to go as a family on june 24th, if that helps.

The store might want to read the official ATT launch manual. It clearly state one line for all customers. See: Crowd Management.

Now maybe the manager of the store you are going to intends to blow off the official ATT plan, but I suspect if his supervisor does a spot check and sees that it won't be a manager for the whole day. Just saying, I'd go by what the book says over a store clerk.

Thankfully you're not in charge. Otherwise there would be a lot of unhappy people since you seem to ALWAYS be negative.

You won't be paying the activation/upgrade fees in the store (you get that on your bill) and if you are in CA, MA, and RI, your tax is going to be off the full price, not the sale price. Might not apply to ya but I figured it was at least worth mentioning. Also I'm pretty sure you can only pre-order one while you're there...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Will I be able to order online for in stock pickup at AT&T?

I hate this so-called upgrade fee. It's a made up charge by the carriers to get more $$$. For once I can see how the new micro-sim is actually special for the iPhone but it really isn't necessary. They don't do anything hard to allow me to 'upgrade'.

I plan on stopping by Best Buy tomorrow morning and pre-ordering my wife's and my iPhones.

I called my local Best Buy. This is a summary of what they said:
- Can order an iPhone per line with existing AT&T account
- Will be opening early on the 24th

The guy I spoke to said they would have black and white available for pre-order. I'll ask when I go in tomorrow if they'll have the white available on the 24th, but I'll probably go with black just to be safe.

Called 3 Best Buy's. All said that pre-ordering was UNKNOWN at this time and to call back tomorrow.

Between AT&T and their stupid no pre-orders on launch day and Best Buy not having a clue to begin with - I don't know whose worse. Lol.

activation

If you pre-order from Apple and have it delivered, how do you activate it at home? Do you just plug it into itunes? I remember when I bought the 3g they activated it in the store and copied the SIM card. How do you make sure all your info. is copied at home? Thanks!

Just like a standard upgrade. Plug in the new phone to the computer with iTunes up and running. If you have an iPhone now, just do a backup first before you activate the new one. Very simple process. :)
