I am using File Explorer. I first discovered it for my iPad and iPhone when trying to work out a way to copy files from my NAS to the devices whilst connected to the home network over wifi.

Then when I got the Macbook Air last year and the Mini last week, I installed it onto those devices and paid for the Pro version for each instance.

I like it because when doing a search it will search sub-directories. If Finder can do that I cannot work out how to do it.

With Windows Explorer it's always been a basic function of the search feature, hence my disappointment with Finder in that respect.

Yep agreed I've trialled SetApp and there are nearly enough apps for it to be viable. Hmm I'd not thought about the internet connectivity part of the system. Good point.
I looked at SetApp as well. And like you, I found there wasn't enough apps of my liking, to merit a subscription. If someone only had need of an app for a month or two, it can be of benefit that way.

I just wanted to give Marta a try. I could not start Marta under Big Sur (11.1) as standard user (has closed directly again). Strange.

There are other alternatives, such as Marta or Commander One.
Does anyone know them?

Which file manager besides pathfinder can calculate file checksums?
I knew about them both - also this https://sourceforge.net/projects/doublecmd/files/

Oof, it's good, but not good.

https://fman.io/ <- looks decent enough.

Midnight Commander and muCommander was great too, in 2004. Not so great now. Edit -- it would appear that muCommander is at version 0.9.6 and I have just taken it for a spin. Conclusion; Finder in combination with ForkLift does the job quite well.

I've tried all of the above apps to see what they can all do performance wise. Of all the apps I've tried none of them match PathFinger and Forklift (IMHO of course).

Qspace looks really promising, £/$5 in the app store. Has anyone here tried it and got an opinion on it?

After my quoted post, I contacted the dev who said they're working on a trial version. In the meantime, I got bored of waiting and bought it anyway.

First impressions are very very promising. I've tried other file managers and found them frustrating for various reasons, usually because they've reinvented the wheel or ported the user experience, interface and keyboard shortcuts from the windows or Linux versions. QSpace very much feels like the native Finder but with more features.

After I've used it during a proper project, I'll report back.

Interesting, for sure... it says "in-app purchases" ... but doesn't specify ... can you tell yet what the in-app purchases add? And is the in-app stuff one-time or subscription based?

Yep I'd be interested to know about those as well, plus of course how much the extras cost....

Here is what the iAP refers to

If you have any experience with A Better Finder Rename, I would appreciate your thoughts on QSpace possibly replacing ABFR... thanks.

QSpace looks interesting. You can even calculate and verify the checksums of files.

Unfortunately there seems to be no possibility to compare folder contents?

These IAPs are:

https://qspace.awehunt.com/en-us/tutorial.html#enhanced-archiver (currently free)

The last 3 are 99c/99p, one time purchase.

Renaming is literally just simple renaming, and the Advanced Batch Rename IAP looks more powerful than Finder's.

The help docs and FAQs are here – plenty of customisation available:

I haven't tried ABFR, but this will give you an idea of the batch rename extension (which I haven't bought yet) to QSpace can do:

Just looking at their webpage, it looks like it has possibilities. I'm just curious if it's going to be kneecapped in certain functionality by being on the App Store verses purchasing direct. I ran into one other program where the App Store version was limited in functionality because of requirements by the App Store policies.

Wow, I have to say, I'm impressed so far with QSpace.. I find it even better than Forklift in areas.

My only complaint is it isn't very well documented, and thus far, the support group on Telegram seems to be 99% Chinese conversations. Oh, I guess I'd rather have it as full featured from the start, without the couple purchasable 'extra' features.

does qspace offer dual pane?

One of the reviews mentioned that it didn’t run under Big Sur... true or not?
