I have a Fujitsu 55' Plasma (TV Room)
42" Pioneer Elite Plasma (Bedroom)
and just purchased a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD for my office which I'm very happy with. I can see the difference between the Plasma's up converted to 1080i vs Sharp's 1080p. I'm looking forward to my new Sony Blue Ray player to come this month to see the REAL difference of 1080p.

Depends how much you want to spend.

Samsung and Sony make the best LCDs.
Sony use Samsung display elements, but everything else is handled by Sony.
Sony is more expensive than Samsung, but the picture is better.

Pioneer and Panasonic make the best Plasmas.

It depends how much you want to spend however, and what size you want. If you're looking to spend £300 on a 26", then I would say go Samsung. If you're wanting to spend £8000 on a 40", then go B&O.

I am surprised not a lot of people have recommended sharp aquos, i think they are soooooooooo nice and okay priced. Samsungs look great too.I have never been much of a Sony fan (except for Playstation iguess) so that's probably why ijust walk by thru them without even glancing at their TV i ll chekc them out next time...

I have a 32" 720p Samsung LCD, and I'm a little biased in that I think Samsungs are better than Sonys.

I heard Vizios are ok, but require a little bit of tweaking in the colors to achieve a decent output. If you are in the market for a tv, I'd wait for Black Friday or Christmas, LCD TVs are expected to drop a couple hundred bucks during the holiday season.

If you are ballin, get the Pioneer Elite plasma, that thing is incredible, but EXTREMLY costly.

If you want a LCD with good black levels look for the Samsung 78x or 950 series. They use LED backlight with different "zones" - very nice. Sony's X4500 seem to be good too using RGB LED backlight, but i couldn't convince the rational part of my brain to shell out the money for it.

But as im very statisfied with my Samsung 789 "Mr. Rational" was right. :D

TV brand

AFter much research, I bought a Westinghouse 42" for $1000 two years ago. It has been incredible, I love it. NOw, mac mall has the same TV refurbished for $570. If anything happened to my TV, I would get the same one.
Sonys may be great, but my wife and and I love this tv and for $570?? Why not, if you hate it return it.

never buy plasma its an old technology
(well so is LCD)

Sony's XBR8 and new XBR9 that comes out in the spring are LED backlit and i expect them to release a bigger OLED next year

Agreed. I paid $1300 for a new one about 3 years ago. Amazing to see them below $600.

I also recently picked up a 52" Westy for under $1000. They're amazing for the price.

Also, "Best" is a subjective term. Use what makes you happy.

funny, because all of the top tv's are always plasmas. plasmas keep getting better and better, and the older issues that plagued plasmas (burn in) are pretty much nonexistent.

deeper blacks, better colors, no motion blur (not having to deal with this 120z headache).

I myself have a sony kdl52xbr4. Yes it is lcd, but i bought it because i was going to use my macbook on it, as a monitor. if it was strictly limited to television viewing, i would've gone with a pioneer kuro.

Plasma is fine, but my displays are mostly in rooms with daylight. LCD is vastly superior in this usage scenario.

I have a friend with a pair of the new Kuro Plasmas and they are indeed awesome, but so is the price tag! :D :D :D

I don't know about OLED. They've got to make bigger screens...11" isn't going to cut it.

now the XBR9 is 240hz

We bought a 52" Samsung LCD last summer, I love it. After reading reviews and researching forever, I had it narrowed down to a Panasonic 50" plasma, or the Samsung LN52A650. I would have gone Pioneer Kuro, but the budget wasn't there.

I did the side by side (as well as I could) and finally decided on the Samsung. I was mildly worried about their Touch of Color (ToC) making it look funny in our living room, but considering the red seems to match the reds we use in the room it looks pretty good, and it's dark enough that you rarely notice that the TV is not Black.

I love it. After spending a good amount of time tweaking the settings I finally got it where it looks good to me. Of course I probably need to re-do a lot of it since it's got some hours in on it now. We don't even have HD yet (did a preview week on our cable provider and can't justify $10 a month for it at this point).

I really need to update our receiver to handle HDMI and component switching but there are plenty of connections on the back of the TV to handle our needs for now.

Here is another thumbs up for the Samsung LN52A650. I got mine last Friday and the picture is incredible. I thought HD looked great on my old DLP (that died) but it is awesome on the Samsung. I highly recommend it and would definitely buy it again.

I got it from Onecall and was very impressed with their shipping. It was strapped to a pallet and had a shockwatch on it so I would know if the shipping company did anything to it. They did not and it was in terrific shape.

As my birthday is coming up, I plan to purchase a 40 or 46 incher LCD for myself. I used to have a dedicated screen (DELL UltraSharp 2407WFP) for Apple TV, Wii, PS3, and Local HD programs via eyeTV.

After I have an 24-inch iMac, I sold the DELL display.

A month ago, I decided on the LG 42LG60 120Hz LCD and it was about $1199 on hsn.com. However, they no longer offered that model anymore. I found a couple episodes of DL.TV and opted for the Samsung Series 7 or 8.

Now, I'm thinking the Samsung LN46A850. I believe that the Series 8 is just slimmer and offers an extra USB port, right? I wish I can shop locally, but my Camry can barely fit a 42-inch Philips LCD TV, let alone a 46-incher.

I had one bad experience shopping online for HDTV as the Plasma TV arrived with broken glass. Anyone shopped at Sears.com before?
