Help me please

Hi,

I have just got my Dell 2311H and its good. I have the cast issue....Even if its A01...

However its fine there not much bleeding and when in front of it there's no prob.

If people want I could post photos of it, (my pantone huey pro is in the post...)

However when I try to adjust the brightness on the on screen menu, the brightness never actually goes dark, it get darker, but not really dark even at 0, I could actually use it (like now) on zero brightness.

Is this normal or is it defective in some way?

Thanks

yeah will be curious what they say ?

Just got a reply:

"Thank you for your interest in NEC Displays.

The new PA301W is not due out until late this year I believe but will eventually replace the LCD3090WUXi. *The PA271W is now available, I have attached the specifications for your records, pricing is £1,179 ex VAT. *I do not have any indications of PA301W pricing yet.

Unfortunately I am not aware of any retail shops carrying the PA series, however our reseller partner Colour Confidence may be able to assist you with somewhere you can view the products, they are on 0121 684 1234."

I'd have to say that it's normal since I have two and it's usable at 0 brightness (I use them at 30)

Thanks alot :D Put my mind to rest.

Btw the Dell 2311h is a very nice monitor for the price, the resolution is higher than my high-res mbp 15" screen, but less crisp as there are less pixels per inch...

But I still cannot believe this only cost me £258. When I get it calibrated I think it will be amazing.

Also Height wise it works well with the rain design mstand as it is very adjustable. and they are smooth to move, unlike other reviews.

Thanks

was looking on hardforum.com will hollingsworth from NEC said fall ? who knows :) hehehe all the fun of not knowing when exactly but knowing its coming

I use the older Apple Cinema Display 23" with my Mac Pro. It has a native resolution of 1920x1200 (same as the 24"), and it's very bright and the colors are very rich and vivid. I love the display, everything is very crisp and sharp and the color is just go good on it, and it's very bright. I don't believe it's an LED display though, but it is plenty bright. Apple has discontinued the 23" Cinema Display. It is a matte display like the 30". I've had my 23" Cinema display since 2006 and it has been running strong every single day for 4 years with no decrease in image quality or brightness, it's a very reliable display. You can find them on eBay now for around $300 - $400. Good luck with your search.

I bought a Dell U2410 to go with my new MP. First one had green/magenta cast, so I had them replace it. Second one had a cast as well, though not as bad, but the power supply hummed quite loud.

I now have to decide on a different monitor. I'm leaning towards the NEC PA241W. I've also been thinking about either the 24" or new 27" Apple display. Two things I'm curious of though:

1) The 27" iMac has had issues with yellow tinting - I wonder if the 27" stand-alone display will be similar? I remember some speculation a while back where some people thought the yellowing had to do with the hot components inside the iMac.

2) Have any paid photographers actually used a glossy display in controlled lighting situations (i.e. to avoid the reflections) and found them suitable? I have tended towards anti-glare displays; however, I was never found of the "crystallized" effect that my 20" iMac had. The new coating on the Dell U2311H that I am writing on is no better in that regard. I've been wondering if I wouldn't appreciate the "clarity" of a glossy screen more. I remember reading tidbits on Apple sites when they first starting releasing the glossy monitors about how it improved the picture quality - and theoretically it makes sense since you're removing a piece of plastic whose sole purpose is to disperse light!

their are a few ? I would not do it ? does not mean you cant but its not optimum :) trust me if glossy was cool and better then NEC and Eizo would be doing it ;)

hoods help a lot ? you can make one maybe get some gator board or something and cut it out use velcro ? for the inside use some non shiny black velvet or something ? that will be the hard part the inside non shiny material ? you could try flat paint ? not best but better than nothing
gloss is not good ? but if its all you have then you have to work with it and thats OK :) control the light create a hood :)

as a professional photographer, I lean towards IPS panels....so I'm quite excited about the 27"...any day now.... getting two and going side by side...

Well, my Dell 23'' Ultrasharp arrived today. It's night now, so I darkened the room and everything...

massive tinting in the lower left corner. If I look at an angle from the left, there is a tiny bit of tinting in the lower right corner.

If I look at roughly the same angle from the right, there is tinting in the lower left corner that extends more than halfway across the bottom of the screen and about 1/3 of the way up the left side.

I have to tilt the monitor upward in order to get rid of the tinting in the lower left altogether, and no matter how I try aiming the screen and positioning the screen, there is tinting in at least one of the corners.

Gross.

I'm not entirely sure how bad it is in comparison to how bad it could be. I guess it isnt THAT noticeable unless the screen is totally black. Still. Since I do have another screen in the meantime it might be worth returning it to Dell until they can give me something better.

Been using my 2 HP2229h monitors for a few months now and i'm very pleased. Consistent colours. Bright. Much better than any of the iMac screens. Not seen i single one as good as these HP's. They are both 22" 16:10 and can be rotated to a portrait position. I paid £320 for the pair including DVI leads. Apple told me it wouldn't work with the mini display port adaptor but it does perfectly.

Just wanted to post some pics of tinting on my new Dell 23'' ultrasharp. The pics are very low quality, but they get the point across.

Is it worth returning? I have tinting real bad in that lower left corner, but there is no backlight bleed as far as I can tell, and the tinting, while bad, is only in that corner. I want to send it back, but I might be fighting a losing battle. Anyone else have one of these?

Send it back... The point of getting an IPS monitor is for "accurate" colour representation. Which is defeated if you settle for a monitor with tinting like that.

I second that. You paid for the monitor, you should get the most out of it.

Right now I am trying to decide between adding 8GB RAM for my Mac Pro or buying another Dell U2311H :/

Gahh.. it's still not out yet. They better hurry up, so I can make a decision :D
I have decided to shell out around 1500 pounds for the monitor (I mean it should last me for a while..so spending 300-400 pounds more than planned doesn't make thaaat much of a difference) The question is: should I get a cherry picked european "SpectraView" PA271w or a normal non-cherry picked Multisync PA301w whenever it comes out

Quality wise the cherry picked model seems to be a no brainer, but I am concerned about the smaller size, as my intention from the beginning was to get a 30" model.

you cant get the SV software ? is that correct ?

I might say go for the regular and get the software if you can get it separate ?
and then pick up a Gretag eye V2 one puck to profile with

the 27 went up here some ? not much but should have grabbed it when it was cheaper :) hehehehe

but if I get the SV I know I have the US version of the software I might be selling ?

but yeah if its not that much more the 30 would be nice the downside is to get the most out of them you want SV !!!!

non glossy screen with minimal 'grain'

At the last minute I decided against the 27" ACD, the glossy screen in that size isn't for me.

I've decided to buy a 24-30" matte / anti glare display. So far I've tried the new 24" Samsung someone mentioned a few pages back, it's not bad.

What I'm looking to avoid is the grain or 'stretched pantyhose effect' you see with some anti glare or matte displays.

An example of what I think is an excellent AG display is like you can get on the 15 and 17" MacBook Pro's, that's a great screen!

Does anyone know of something as good in an external display?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro's have TN panels, they are not exactly the best technology out there.

Just setup my 24" ACD. It has one dead pixel over on the far side and the backlight bleed is fairly minimal.

Is that typical for these ACD's?

Thats weird. Mine doesn't have any. Could you take it to have them look at it and maybe fix it?

I'm thinking it's probably not worth the hassle as long as it's off to the side. The pixel might be partially dead as it's sort of faintly dark. Sort of like in The Princess Bride:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GrYNaaYSjs

Besides, Apple has a "don't come bothering me with no dead pixel complaints policy": :D
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1721?viewlocale=en_US

I'm not to hard-over about the dead pixel as I have to actually go looking for it to find it. Also, it's hard to beat on Apple today ....................... as aapl just set a new ATH. :D

thanks for the suggestion though........... may still go that route if the faint dark spot turns ugly.

I finally went for the 27" Dell Ultrasharp over the 27" ACD.

It just has more features.

I.e. multiple inputs (really easy to switch between mac and PC) adjustable height, pivots left and right.

No ugly reflections either.

I was in a real quandary about which screen to go for.

If you want a bright glossy screen and an Apple logo get the ACD.

If you want matte and more inputs, get the Dell.
