I have a MM and LG 27UK650
Without eGPU, do this combination enable HDR? Or it just doesn't?

I look at the OSD menu and I think I am not running on HDR mode...

I personally chose the LG24UD58-B for my Mac mini since its good price value.
For around 280€ you get an IPS panel that is rare in this price range.
I went for the smaller 24" version. For me PPI was more important than screen size, plus I didn't want non-integer scaling because of the iGPU. As a student I work very text-based so working with HiDPI is a breeze. I am happy for stepping into the retina world coming from an 1080p Dell monitor (S2440L) I used for about 5 years.
For the future I am planning to get a second one since I like working with a dual monitor setup.

I am certainly no expert, but in general, there are several types of flat screen monitors. TN (twisted nematic) was the first LCD technology. They tend to be cheap and can have good refresh rates (good for gaming), but suffer from poor viewing angles, uneven backlighting, and color reproduction. IPS (in plane switching) monitors have better viewing angles and color reproduction, generally at the expense of a higher cost and lower refresh rates. PLS (Plane to Line switching) is a Samsung technology which is said to improve upon IPS. VA (Vertical alignment) falls generally between TN and IPS and is kind of a compromise between the two.

Ultimately, it depends on what you use the monitor for. I use IPS monitors as I don't game much on my Mac and I like the better viewing angles and color that IPS provides.

Well, I ended up buying the LG UHD 4K 27UD59P. Great monitor at a great price on Boxing Day $349.99 Can. Beautiful display. Have split screen capabilities, Dark room mode, gamer mode, also is able to be turned vertically. I would definitely recommend this monitor.

there's some users that said Ultrafine 4K works laggy on the new Mini... can anyone confirm?
No lag for me. LG UHD 4K IPS 27UD59P

I use a 4K monitor with my mini, and I don't see any perceptible lag within the macOS UI itself (although I disable most animations because I don't like them). However, complex animations on some websites in Safari or even fade-in/fade-out in old DOS games I run via DOSbox are very laggy. I wonder if an eGPU is going to improve the UI performance.

Thanks. My Ultrafine 4K is waiting in germany at my uncle's. :) Can't wait.

I have the same monitor. I don't think Mac OS supports HDR.... Happy to be corrected. At least High Sierra didn't.

Just wanted to check - is 16GB needed for the 4K Dell P2415Q or just the Ultrafine 4K?

As I mentioned above I use a 4K LG monitor at the moment. My mini runs almost everything smooth at 2x-scaling with its 8GB RAM. Only Launchpad and the Downloads stack in the Dock seem laggy sometimes. These issues get more noticeable if resolution is changed to other scalings than native or 2x.

how is the BenQ PD2710QC rated around here? i have a 2014 MBP and 2017 MBP so i was thinking this might be a good choice?

If I want to use my screen of my current 2012 iMac with my Mac mini arriving next week until I can find a suitable monitor, would I need to buy any external cables to make that work? I think I need DisplayPort but not sure about anything I need to purchase on my own...

It seems you would need a Thunderbolt 3 to mini-DP cable. I don't know if such cables actually exist. The combination of a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and then a mini-DP to mini-DP cable could also work, but it would be a rather expensive experiment, I think.

Apple's documentation regarding the Target Display Mode: https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT204592

Edit: I googled it and it seems there are several Thunderbolt 3 to mini-DisplayPort adapters available. SO you'd need one of those adapters and a mini-DP to mini-DP cable.

From memory, Apple claim the TB3 to TB2 adapter does not support Mini DisplayPort out.

Yep, found it on https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter:
Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

But also, reading the Apple page on TDM, for a 2012 iMac, you actually need a Thunderbolt cable anyway, not a Mini DisplayPort cable.

So yes, the TB3 to TB2 (and 1) adapter (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter), along with a TB1/TB2 cable (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD861LL/A/apple-thunderbolt-cable-20-m) is what you need.

Following this one. Not sure what to get. Looking for either a 2 screen setup ~27" or a curved 34"

  • Mac Mini will work mostly with any monitor, like Phillips for example. much cheaper, though there some things such as facetime will not work. Because one of the mikes and a camera are actually in the Apple monitor. It's kind of weird but the main things do work and then later when there is more money in your pocket you could buy a regular Apple monitor and havve two monitors for some things that are cool to have double monitors. Just a thought for those who are financially iimpaired like me who is living on a retirement check. Any mouse or keyboard that you might have lying around the house will work just fine with mac mini too. That saves a lot also.

Perhaps a dumb q, but I'll ask anyway: would a 32" 1440 monitor with the same PPI as a 24" 1080 monitor nevertheless look "sharper" (text especially)?

Or would they essentially look the same?

32" is a very large area to spread pixels out across, and for my money, I'd opt for no less than 4K at that size. I'm using the 5K 27" iMac as a benchmark here -- it's razor sharp and to me hits a sweet spot of size and resolution.

Looks fantastic. Can you tell us about what specs mini you have the monitor hooked too. I see it shows 100 hz, I thought the mini was only capable of 60hz, noob question maybe, but curious.

Post Modified,ENJOY~

That sounds rather expensive-what would that cost be? Is it worth doing short term?

Those links are to the apple store so it has US prices.

Whether it’s worth it short term will depend on you. If you have any other thunderbolt 1/2 accessories the adapter would allow you to use them with a new
Mac (eg the Mac mini) or even to use thunderbolt3 accessories (except bandwidth sensitive things like an eGPU) with your iMacs thunderbolt 2 port.

Hi - are you using the 27UD59P with a 2018 mac mini?

I have just bought the mac mini. Already had an acer H277HK but the mac won't boot with it - it seems to be a common issue.

So I need to buy a new monitor, just want to check it will work with the 2018 mac mini!

Cheers

If you're using a USB-C to Displayport cable and the monitor isn't showing anything until you log in (which is difficult because you can't see the login screen), then it's a very common issue. The only workaround is to use an HDMI cable, or don't turn your mini off very often. I got my mini replaced but it's the exactly same. There are several posts on here about it.

I was considering selling my 2015 27" iMac and getting a monitor just to use as a dock station for my MBP, maybe later get a mini. But in the end the price I would sell the iMac for just covers the monitor and cables so that did not make much sense. So many decisions and so many monitors, not sure what the best setup would be. These below where some of the monitors I looked at and considered. On the 24" I was looking at dual monitors. Many of these came from users posting in this thread for there setup...
