I actually ended up with motion sickness and a headache due to the frame rate - it's terrible...

Ironic as they say macs are useless for gaming and to get a console...

This time they're WRONG !!!

I bet it runs like a dream on my Dad's tricked out iMac ( me=jealous ) :D

You play it in 1080p? I might be a little too picky, but I think Heroes of the Storm in 1440p is a little too pixelated (I normally play HotS in 4k). How'd you think it'll play on 1440p medium-high settings? As I stated earlier, I only want the frames to keep above 30fps. I prefer higher quality textures with 30fps, than 60fps but with low quality textures.

EDIT: What about the heat generated from the computer when playing? I haven't played any demanding games on my Mac (mostly WoW and HotS), but does Fallout 4 make the fans kick in repeatedly? Can this somehow be dangerous for the computer itself?
Just played on 1440 for 4 hours straight on low setting. Frame rate stayed 50-60 fps the whole time and dipped down to 40 a couple times due to the game having issues not so much the computer. But no failures or freezes. Just tons of good looking fun.

has anyone tried this on a machine thats below minimum spec? wondering if its worth trying on my imac but its a 1gb card...

I'm trying to get my 2010 iMac sold so I can get a newer one and thus play F4. Do you guys think the 27" with R9 M380 would suffice? Resolution and graphic settings aren't as important as FPS to me, I may add.

I had a m380 and I didn't feel it was enough for webgl. I returned it and got my self a m395x. I strongly recommend a m395. The 5k resolution is very demanding.

The two requests are the age old trade offs in gaming. Framerate vs resolution. The higher your resolution, the lower framerates go. To make it as simple as possible, you're going to want the 395x if you want to play fallout 4 and not be unhappy, it's as simple as that. the 395 (not the x) is going to be about 5-10 percent worse with framerates so honestly since you're spending 2500 dollars anyway, an extra 250 isn't that big of a deal. You can opt for the regular 395 though and be fine, just making my suggestion (that's what I did too as you can see haha)

It's going to be about 5-10 percent better framerate than the 295x, so instead of running at 40fps, you may get like 43. Won't be much change.

Personally I'm waiting a couple months. Mods helped a LOT with fallout 3 to really flesh it out, no doubt it will be the same here.

Good news though that this poster (and most of us) will get better performance than the console guys. The xbone and ps4 versions are capped at 30fps. Yep. That's it. And there's been a LOT of users especially on the ps4 side complaining of epic frame drops, likely that'll be fixed in a couple of weeks/months. Fallout 4 is a solid "wait for it" kinda game. I've waited like 7 years, I can wait a few more months lol.

About the console versions (PS4 in particular): If we were to compare them to the PC version, what graphic (texture) options would the console versions resemble?

yeah I wouldn't be surprised if ps4 and xbone are somewhat better looking than me at 1440 on low settings, but in fallout FPS is what matters to me the most not how pretty it looks. From what I've heard is that on counsels they are limited to 30fps and dip to the teens quiet often. At least with pc I'm sitting at 60 fps 85% of the time and dip below 50 maybe 1% due to the game being dumb. I cant wait for a mod to smooth out the fps and everything, it'll be the first mod I download for it for sure.

It's for exactly these reasons that I'm waiting to get fallout 4. One of my favorite ones from fallout 3 and new vegas was "lush" or something like that which added a lot more greens and colors to the landscape. So it didn't look so monocolored and... dead. I know that's a big part of the theme of the game but after playing a game like skyrim where everything is so vibrant and ALIVE, fallout just becomes drab.

But yeah I'm sure they will smooth out framerates with future patches both for consoles and pcs. Enjoy the game man! ;)

I'm probably not going to play it in 5k. Rather just do 1080p or even less and be satisfied (I'm used to playing with a subpar resolution lol).

As a uni student; yeah, those $250 matters. I would've preferably gone with a 21.5" but Apple went and gave them **** GPUs, so I'm already spending way more getting a 27" than I initially hoped.

So now that you've had more time with it, have you done any more tests at different resolutions and qualities? If you set it to 1080 and high settings, what kinda framerates are you getting? And if you are on 1440, how high can you have the settings before you start dropping below 30fps? I'm still really on the edge on if I want to get this for ps4 or for pc, sitting on the couch would be more convenient but if I can get a better looking game on here, I'll do it. Thanks for being a tester! :D

I actually just bought it for ps4 as well so I can take it on the go instead of hauling my imac around. But I havnt got a chance to play on the imac since this 1440. I really like how it plays on the ps4 too. I would still say my low res 1440 and 1080 look better than ps4.

Ok that's good to know then. My friend has it for the xbone and it looks pretty good on there. So obviously it would look better on the ps4, it's just a question on the imac. If you have any future feedback please let us know, how fallout 4 works will be indicative of other games too so thanks again!

Alright I got on my iMac fallout and set it at 1080p at high preset. After 1 hour of play the lowest fps i saw was 39 and I would say average of 49 over the hour. Which is just awesome. Next I'll try ultra at 1080 and see how she runs. But I love the results of high on 1080.

1080 high settings lowest fps in 4 hours of constant play...36 fps, average of 48 fps. It looks so pretty.

Man that UI is clearly made for consoles and people sitting 6 feet away from the screen lol. Oh well, mods will take care of that soon enough. Glad to hear your ultra specs do so well at that resolution! :D :D

For those of you on the M295X, what settings would you recommend if chosing 1440p as resolution? Tried 1440p with medium settings (turned "Godrays" off) and I got about 40fps at the start of the game. Although the game feels very slow. I'm normally used to console gaming (30fps), but this seems slower than 30fps.

Has any performance fixing mods been released yet?

Those of you with the new RiMac (M395X), how's it for you? Are there any real performance differences between the M295X and the M395X?

Thinking of connecting my old 1080p monitor to reduce the bluriness that occurs because of the scaling on the 5k screen. The problem is the lack of space on my desk...

I think Fallout 4 is one of the main reasons I've decided to build a PC instead of getting an iMac haha

Indeed. High settings at 1080p and only getting 30-40 fps. Not terrible, but the iMac is not going to be future proof at all.

Looks like a double whammy for the iMacs, according to this article. Definitely seems like an nvidia optimized game. Even AMD cards that are proven to be faster than their nvidia counterparts are losing by quite a bit. (The r9 390 vs the GTX 970 is particularly troubling)

By the way, does the desktop resolution matter in any way? I mean, does it matter if the desktop resolution is in 4k, while the game plays at 1440p?

Also, don't forget about the drivers. The Boot Camp drivers barely get any updates...

Yeah the iMac isn't a great gaming platform, but I am surprised how well it's going great so far. It feels and looks 100% better than my ps4 version. I want to see how battlefront plays in a couple weeks.

Ok just to let you know. I played fallout 4 on my imac with the m395x at 2560 x 1440 at ultra. I get around 30fps. It's definitely playable. The gpu was running at ~75C. I was surprised how easy it was to plug my xbox one remote without doing anything I played like on a xbox. I was running the game on an external usb3 5400rpm hard drive

That's great news huffy, for a game like Fallout, there's no need for 60fps. More of a big deal on a shooter, honestly having a framerate closer to 24fps can give it a more "film like" feel. I know with The Last of Us on ps4 I had the option to keep it locked at 30 fps and I liked that. Made it feel like a movie rather than give everything that soap opera effect. To each his own of course, I would be totally fine with 30fps on fallout.

On Battlefront though... that's a different story. ;)
