Ok just to let you know. I played fallout 4 on my imac with the m395x at 2560 x 1440 at ultra. I get around 30fps. It's definitely playable. The gpu was running at ~75C. I was surprised how easy it was to plug my xbox one remote without doing anything I played like on a xbox. I was running the game on an external usb3 5400rpm hard drive

Your GPU reaches ~75°C only? Mine reaches around 102°C when playing Heroes of the Storm. Sometimes it reaches ~70°C when watching YouTube videos...

Is the performance level of the M395X much higher than the M295X, or is the difference only a couple of fps? Well, and the temperature, of course.

Having played the game on my ps4 I now realise why there were so many embargoes on reviews
The game is utter garbage. It's basically fallout 3 at 1080p at 20ish fps , the graphics are mediocre , .

Get a proper gaming PC if you want great graphics and 60+ FPS. The ps4 is so slow it can't properly run the game even at LOW settings at a playable/smooth FPS.

Yes it was not that hot. I reached 97 with Unigine Heaven. I think the m395x is faster but I don't know how fast.

That's great news huffy, for a game like Fallout, there's no need for 60fps. More of a big deal on a shooter, honestly having a framerate closer to 24fps can give it a more "film like" feel. I know with The Last of Us on ps4 I had the option to keep it locked at 30 fps and I liked that. Made it feel like a movie rather than give everything that soap opera effect. To each his own of course, I would be totally fine with 30fps on fallout.

On Battlefront though... that's a different story. ;)
I'll do another video on battlefront next week.

The temperature difference is massive. I just finished a game of HoTS and reached 103°C!

EDIT: I might've found a temporary solution (maybe not exactly a "solution", but it helps): I downloaded "Macs Fan Control" and turned the fans up to maximum (about 2700 rpm), while playing half an hour of Fallout 4 (Boot Camp). I used "HWiNFO64" to measure the heat; the GPU was mostly jumping around 80-90°C, with the maximum being 103°C (the average - according to the program - was 93°C). Having the fan on maximum (while playing) seems much better than having the computer controlling them.

Although, is this "bad" for the fans in any way? Having them on max while playing for a couple of hours, that is. Maybe it's still better than having the GPU going over 100°C?

Also, the CPU: It reached a maximum of 99°C, according to the program, the numbers are also marked red. Avarage was about 90°C, i think. Didn't check the CPU temperatures until now, and the average number's lower now compared to when i just quit the game. Is this something to be more worried than the GPU?

Haha wow I disagree with everything you said completely. They've fixed every little thing I hated about the game and made it perfection. The graphics look a million times better than fallout 3 and better than skyrim. Is it top of the line.. no but I'm playing it on low at 60fps and it one of the best looking games I've played in the recent years.

Agreed on the disagreement. F4 is a great game that has addressed a whole slew of issues from the prior engine. I also like to main and secondary story lines so far. There is a ton to do in this game.

I am playing on a PS4.

Just for the record here: I am playing on the 2015 iMac with the m395x and the i7 CPU. I play mostly on high settings (very few on medium, textures on Ultra) and get >40 fps inside buildings and between 20 and 30 outside during the day (night is better). Sometimes in VATS, the framerate drops below 10 fps for some reason, but that only happens every few hours or so. I am soooo looking forward to eGPUs!

Might I ask what resolution you're playing on?

1920x 1080 (or 1200 can't remember now). I honestly have no clue why people want to play at 5k ;)
So they can feel special. Numerous studies have shown that most people can't tell the difference between uncompressed 1080p and 4k video when there's motion. That's why those tvs at bestbuy that are displaying 4k screens are showing nearly static videos of a cityscape or something.

Personally its nearly unnoticable going beyond 1440p for most gaming. I have the remastered Homeworld collection and alternating between full 5k resolution and 1440, unless I'm leaning my head to be 9 inches from the screen you can barely tell a difference. There's a point of diminishing returns and beyond 1440p (or 2k, whatever you wana call it), it's meh. On static images like photography it's helpful, I'm a photographer and this 5k screen is nice so I can know exactly how an image will look when printed and exactly how sharp or soft it will be. But for gaming? It's purely a "nice to have".

Off topic I know but man I would love to see triple A games on OS X utilizing Metal.

Has anyone here updated to the latest AMD (M295X) drivers? I did and it seems like Fallout 4 is crashing on start up...

EDIT: Nevermind. Seems like I made a mistake in the ".ini" file while downloading a mod, which made the game crash. Solved it now.

Modding already fried potato? I haven't had time to follow it closely but I wouldn't expect there to be many mods this quickly. What have you been using?

Surprised? A Bethesda game isn't really a "Bethesda game" if it doesn't have several dozen mods available right after its launch. ;)

I just downloaded a few "game improving mods"; they don't contain any new content, but it improves what there already is. I ain't in Boot Camp right now, so I can't see the exact mods i downloaded, but it was a weapon sound mod, eye texture mod and so on...

Although, I do remember my "favorite" one: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1235/?
It makes you see the complete dialouges, instead of (mostly missleading) phrases. :)

You can check out the mods yourself here: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/?

Also, is it only me, or is the game running smother with the new AMD driver Apple released today? Unfortunately, the sound delays are still there. I haven't written about it here, but the shooting (including reloading) sounds are sometimes delayed. Am I the only one with this problem?

I had it posted in another thread but yes, your game will be running better with the new driver. Amd specifically posted it helps for fallout 4 (and other games like battlefront).

Can you do us a favor next time you're in bootcamp? Can you see which driver version you have? The latest one is 15.11.1 and that's the one us late 2015 guys don't have access to yet. :(

I just answered in the other thread. As I mentioned, it's version: 15.201.2001.
I am new to Apple AMD machines. Where do I get the new driver? That is still the "old" one:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/bootcamp

Do you have the late 2014 Retina iMac? If that's the case, you should start "Apple Software Updater" while in Windows and you'll see the new drivers as a selectable download.

Thanks for your answer. :) I have a 2015 iMac. So the Graphics driver updates come via the Apple Software update tool for AMD cards? It's really a shame I can't easily install the regular AMD drivers (including beta).

For a point of comparison, I am running FO4 on a Late 2012 iMac (3.2 GHz i5, 680MX, 16 GB RAM) on Windows 7. I have a custom set of graphics settings (1080P, FXAA 8x, textures Ultra, everything else on medium or high except for godrays (low) and SSAO (off).

With these settings I can maintain 60fps in most places, with occasional dips into the 50's and very occasionally dropping to 40+ that seems to be a result of one particular particle effect that I haven't nailed down (looking at Codsworth's exhaust seems to trigger it).

Either way I've been very pleased with these settings since it has kept the game very playable for me and still looking great. The GPU settles at a steady 74 ºC during long gaming sessions at the base clock. (While I have run a modest overclock on it in the past, I'm not doing so for FO4).

There should be no reason that the 2014 and 2015 iMacs shouldn't be able to manage 60 fps at 1080P - the 680MX can handle it pretty easily.

Edit: I'm running Nvidia's game ready driver for FO4.

Dropping godrays to low seemed to be the biggest fps boost for me, and even with them on low they still look great in-game.

From the videos I've seen, texture settings do.... nothing. Well very close. Nearly no framerate change and visually it doesn't change anything.
Oh Bethesda and your poorly done ports to pc...

No problem! :)

Yup, the Apple updater does all the job. No need to download them manually from AMD's site.
