Can dual cpu tray from 4,1 be used to replace single tray in:
1) Single cpu 4,1;
2) Single cpu 5,1 2010;
3) Single cpu 5,1 2012

Can dual cpu tray from 5,1 be used to replace single tray mac in: 4,1, 5,1 (2010/2012)?

Basically 2009 trays go to 2009 towers (4,1).

2010-2012 trays go to 2010-2012 towers (5,1).

A flashed 4,1 main board will not accept a true 5,1 tray etc.

No 4,1 has to go into 4,1 same with 5,1 firmware flashing doesn't change that

But dual cpu tray from a corresponding machine (for example, originating from a dual 5,1) can be used to replace a single cpu mac’s tray in the same model machine (5,1)?

Did I understand correctly - To add M.2 bootable SSD, I would need an ACHI SSD, like Samsung 951 (?), and a PCIe card...Which cards are better/work OOB, and does not cost lot of $ ?

Has something changed recently with regards to storage options in HS?

Thanks! :)

SM951 has both NVMe and AHCI version. Only AHCI is bootable.

And yes, you will need an adaptor.

A more balanced choice (performance, cost, availability, etc) may be the Kingston HyperX Predator. It is not only AHCI, but also provide up to 960GB option, and has package option that come with the required PCIe adaptor to make it the most OOTB bootable PCIe SSD solution on cMP.

Thanks!
Do you know any standalone PCIe adapters which does not cost a lot and can be used OOB with M.2?
[doublepost=1518343600][/doublepost]P.S. Another question: As we spoke earlier, Radeon 560 would work OOB with latest HS update. Can it handle HEVC hardware decoding, as Westmere CPUs does not support it?

Will there be any issues with Apple logo on boot while using this GPU?

Here's where I sit right now

Tower................$247....shipped
W3690...............$115...shipped
24GB DDR3 ECC...$67....shipped
OSX WiFi/BT card.$140....shipped
128 MBA SSD......$119....shipped
Sintech adapter ..$19....shipped
BlueRay..............$52....shipped

That's $759 plus some cables to power the RX480 I pulled from my PC. I also pulled a 1TB, 2@2TB, 4TB and 250GB SSD.
Apple charge more than your total just to configure a nMP with an 8-core CPU instead of 6-core. Oh yeah, and it's a 5 year old CPU :D

Would DT-120 PCIe 3.0 x4 Host Adapter for M.2 NGFF PCIe SSD;

or Angelbird Wings PX1 PCIe x4 M. 2 Adapter
work OOB?

Kind of confused about the RAM. Just to be sure: Can 5,1 work with either ECC or non-ECC ram if not mixed? Or it will only accept ECC modules as per specs?

What is the best non-expensive 1333Mhz RAM option for 5,1 6/12 core?

Both ECC and non ECC RAM can work, and you can actually mix use of them (ECC will be automatically disabled).

However, there is no point to use non ECC RAM, because they are more expensive, and less reliable.

The server pulled DDR 3 ECC 1333MHz RAM usually are the cheapest option.

When you looking for those DIMM, make sure you either go for ALL UDIMM or ALL RDIMM, you CANNOT mix use of them. Also, if possible, only go for 2Rx4 DIMM (memory rank).

Anyway, please study this thread.

Thanks!

UDIMM seems to be more expensive than RDIMM...

So, basically as I see it, it will mean 1333Mhz ECC Unregistered memory in my case (As Apple reccomends as well).

Performace difference between all three types of ram could be within ~1% margin if I understand correctly?
[doublepost=1519114583][/doublepost]P.S. Any performance difference for ECC Unregistered sizes: 4x8Gb, or 8x4Gb?

The Kingston HyperX Predator 960GB are very difficult to find for sale now. I suspect that that Kingston stopped manufacturing them & only old stock remains.

Thanks for the info, I just check with the local reseller, and they confirmed that this model is no longer manufactured.

There is one more live extension on the bootable SSD PCIE for mac ..... ;)

Interesting, didn't know that, but for that "low" speed, I will prefer to simply buy a SATA SSD. The exact same price ($1399) can get a 4TB Samsung 860 Evo.

In fact, I am still think my next SSD upgrade may be done via a 4x mSATA PCIe card. Therefore, I will have 4 extra SATA slots instead of 1. My Mac now is already "full", all 6 native SATA II ports + 2 extra SATA III ports on the Tempo SSD are used. And only 1 PCIe slot left. If I use that for storage upgrade, I prefer give myself more room for future expansion (especially I don't need extreme high speed SSD).

Can I use 15pin SATA cable (extended from Mac Pro's HHD bay) to power a PCI-E USB-C card?
How much power can SATA port deliver in theory?
