Quick question, why don't you request this feature on Apple's Request Site? It sounds like you have a genuine need for it and it doesn't sound like it would be terribly difficult to implement, as you noted.
it would appear so, the imap option gives you both notes and calendars to sync, i currently have calendar and mail syncing via exchange and notes via imap. I found however it duplicated my notes after setting up google imap
For the note sync it has to be over IMAP and it doesn't sync with Google Notebook, but the emails in Gmail that are labeled as "notes". I have no idea why it is like this. So this means that it is possible to edit the notes from the iphone, but not in your gmail. The sync is really fast. If your create a note on the iphone it takes less than a second to see it in your gmail.

I can't find any consistency for them. Some I have installed, some I don't. Some I've downloaded once before, some I haven't. Some are free, some aren't.

YES! Finally.... however, I don't use the default birthday calendar because I like to have alerts/reminders...
Another much needed feature that is now in 4.0 is MobileMe Alias support! The only downside is you can not set the alias to be the default sending account and also there is no way to enter your name.
For example, if I send an email from my alias, it shows on the other end as "myemail@mac.com" rather than "John Doe".
Hopefully those 2 things will be fixed before GM...
mail and calendar are via exchange notes via imap. i checked gmail and I now have a notes label but my notes have not synced to gmail

Have not had a chance to install it yet, was wondering if it made this beta. They had announced the calendar API was opened up for devs, so now we will finally see over the air / Cloud syncing with cal's. No more of this WIFI only syncing garbage.

BTW, if you sync your Google calendars using CalDAV rather than Exchange, it will preserve the color coding (set in iCal or Gmail) on your iPhone. I couldn't stand using the Exchange method because it assigned random colors to all of my calendars; I've got about ten calendars in my Google Apps account and they're all color-coded in a very logical way. Using CalDAV to sync keeps the colors intact so they display correctly.

I already got Google Sync on my Blackberry Bold and here the online calendar don't update. That's why I asked. =)

sorry, are you talking about syncing google calendars on the iphone? i thought when you sync it only puts your default calendar, not all of them?
