I wonder what he thinks about it having more than 640KB of RAM, which as we all know is the most any application will ever need.
agreed, also i would like to add i don't mind spending an extra 30 dollars on a pen that works on the ipad.

Well, it had a keyboard. So that's solved.
And as far as pen goes, I don't really care much for it, but you can go get a stylus if you really want one.
So, it's really not an issue, and shouldn't necessarily get in it's way of succeeding.
I think that the iPad has other, more serious flaws that may get in it's way of success.

So? He is rich because he is an excellent businessman, not because he is a product visionary.
I mean basically Bill is saying "Apple should have made their product more like these other products that have been commercial failures for nearly a decade."
windows is a product, word is a product any other piece of software they have developed is a project he was involved in the xbox which was and is a product.
also Zune isn't a failure nor is the xbox. the Zune was actually able to break into the Mp3 market even though the ipod already dominated... kudos to them.
Right. I didn't say Gates wasn't involved in any products, I said he has never been a product visionary. All of those products you mentioned were "me too" products created by Microsoft to compete with existing products. The original Windows was a ripoff of Mac OS to run on IBM machines, they created the Xbox because Sony was getting too much traction in the living room, and there were already plenty of word processing programs before Word.

another very rich guy named steve jobs has a different opinion.
Not only that but it is all built on the original Monopoly stemming from licensing an OS MS didn't even write, they bought it from someone else and licensed widely. Those early years were also full of ruthless, slimy moves on Microsofts part.
So mainly, luck, monopoly, and ruthlessness.

Bill Gates is not the right person to ask about how the iPad will do. He's been using tablet PCs with pen for many years but he has less experience with the iPhone/Touch than most people. It's only natural for Bill Gates to think that iPad also needs a pen to succeed.
I think Bill Gates is looking at it more in the productivity and creation sense, rather than the consumer platform that the iPad will most likely fit.
The iPad is a consumer device, it's designed to consume content like books, music, videos, podcasts, etc. It's intent isn't meant for creation, as much as Apple would like us to believe with iWork. Developers can very much fill that creation void, but, I think other devices fit the roll of a Creation, business device better then the iPad.
Personally, I don't see the value in owning an iPad myself, as I'm more interested in such a device replacing my paper notebook and the many roles it fills, rather then another way to consume content. Of course, again, developers could fill that void over time with new applications.
If only Microsoft would actually market the Courier. That's a device I could actually see myself using for what I need.
