Bioshock 2 wasn't very well received, interesting they bothered porting this over.

There's a lot of hype behind Bioshock Infinite - wonder if they're planning on bringing that over?

I can only speak from the 1st game, which I enjoyed. Also anytime the Mac is getting another native game thats all good and I would guess if the 2nd one is as well received as the 1st one was maybe the entire thing will get to mac. Support Mac Native gaming is my motto.

I'm not sure where you got the idea it wasn't very well received. Looking at Metacritic the PC version got great reviews pretty much across the board plus it sold pretty well too.

Even the console versions were very well received.

That's quite surprising, I recall seeing threads on Steam during a sale with users saying "£3 is still too much for Bioshock 2" and all my journalist/writer buddies rated it quite poor.
I didn't expect it to have such a high metacritic score.

To be fair, when you ask if any game is worth X$/£, there will be people that just say NO without having played it

Metacritic is just a joke.
Highest rated PC games ever has 96 points, and one of them are Out of The Park Baseball, which has 3.8 user score.

Also all the Elder Scrolls games has 90+ rating, same with every Valve game.
Not that any of those games are bad, but it just seems too high, same with Dragon Age 2, which EA probably payed good money to get a high score.

If you look on RPGs compared to Oblivion and Dragon Age 2, like Risen and Gothic 3 which has 20-30 points lower it's not really fair.

Why are you blaming Metacritic ? It's hardly their fault. All they do is collate all the individual magazine and online scores and work out an average. If Metacritic is a joke then by that logic so is every review by every magazine and online site. Sorry but you have no basis for your statement. When I look at Metacritic I look at the score given by each individual site most of which are quite reputable.

The way they work out that average can be arbitrary, because they have to convert non-numerical scores to numerical ones: http://http://www.gamerevolution.com/manifesto/whats-wrong-with-metacritic-2791

Rottentomatoes has this problem too--you can find reviews that are debatable whether they should be labeled "fresh" or "rotten." That's why it's best to take aggregate scores with a grain of salt, and instead rely on a few reviewers with which you share similar tastes and that you trust.

As for the game, it's great that it's coming, but Im just not willing to shell out $40 for a game that's $5 during every steam sale, and is not guaranteed to have the DLC available for it at some point. I'd be more interested in bioshock infinite released in a much more timely fashion.

True but like I said I go their primarily to look at all the individual scores. It's easy to check them all there then go to each individual site or look at each individual magazine. Plus it has links to the reviews on most web sites so you can go there to read individual reviews.

As far as the first Bioshock goes, it's a shame the mac version isn't available on Steam. I know Feral has the rights, but there are several games that you can buy on Steam and on Mac games arcade at the same time (Torchlight, MISE,...) just to give an example. In fact, I believe Bioshock is available on Mac Games arcade as well. So why not on Steam ?

Because they'd have to be SteamPlay titles, and Feral can't do that and remain profitable. Most SteamPlay games were ported by the publishers, so they don't have to pay licensing fees to port their own games.

Aspyr is the exception. I'm not sure how they manage it.

Yeah there is a thread on Steam which explains this "game on steam but not on app store" or "game on app store but not on steam".

The only problem is money - and the only solution is for developer to actually develop themselves Mac version, unlike ported by Feral or Aspyr. Not many do that because of the only problem - money.

Hmm, interesting. It was a good game aeons ago when it came out. Perhaps if it is under a tenner (like doom 3 is), it will be worth buying but lets face it any "serious" gamer completed it years ago. No wonder people snigger when mac owners talk about playing games on their machines if this is the way mac owners are treated.

Doom 3 was released for the Mac in 2005 that's almost 7 years ago now! BioShock 2 will be released at a lower price than a new AAA title but comparing BioShock 2 with Doom 3 on price when Doom 3 is 5/6 years older is not exactly fair.

You have a point about the lag on Mac versions and we are working hard to reduce that. The choice of Mac games is getting better and better in recent years and we have slowly been reducing the lag and porting better games, the jokes about Mac gamers finally getting "Pong 2000" are about 10 years out of date :D

I'm not a gamer much anymore, but I bought Bioshock 1 as my only game for my iMac. It was cheap, and i wanted something I could play from time to time. It ports well to the mac, but i'm not even on the third level yet! On the whole, it's a different concept from things like Doom, Fear, Crysis etc.

I will have to finish version one first though:)

I can't get through anything like that either. I STILL haven't finished Silent Hill 2. -.-

Some buddies of mine have the crazy idea to buy me Amnesia on Steam. Then, they want me to play through it on Skype.
Yeah.
Right.

:D

I haven't even made it through all of Bioshock 1 yet. I'm a gigantic wuss and it scares the bajesus out of me. >.<
True but its so weird and scary it makes it fun, my take was when starting the game was what the heck has happened. It gets your curiosity running.

Still waiting for this. Would be nice to play without having to load up bootcamp and wait for friggin' ever for LIVE servers to give me updates.

Been working out a few last minute issues with Mr Bubbles... luckily I think Mr Bubbles is almost ready to back down and allow Mac users into Rapture, amazing what you can do with a modified shotgun and armour piercing shells.

Anyway I digress... :D
