wordmunger, that is fantastic. I love the look of the branches on the right and that almost holy, bright light. Very cool.

Thanks! You see, that's why I retired from b/w photography. I'm not sure I can do any better than that one....

One of the beauties of photoshop is creating stunning black and white images by channel mixing RGB images into a monochrome. You have so much more control than starting with a b&w image or converting it to greyscale alone. If you've never played with this feature, check it out!

This picture of my daughter is 1) in RGB, 2) a straight conversion to BW, and 3) a 60/40 mix of the red and green channels. If I would have simply used levels to lighten her face, the curtain behind her would have gotten lighter too. The mix of the channels both lightened her face and darkened the background.

This is one of my few and favorites. Taken on an island off Thailand. The sun reflected a lot off the sand and my darks don't blend in to well. I've played a little in Photoshop trying to improve it. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know.

Looks like a lot of your lighter areas are blown out. The curves tool in photoshop can bring them back a bit, as well as the shadow/highlight adjuster. I did a quick tweak here, and you can see by the flat areas in the clouds that there's no information left there. It's completely blown out.

Good job. She is a beautiful young lady. You must be very proud of her. Was that at a dance recital?

Thanks. She IS beautiful and I AM proud of her, yet not for that reason. The picture was taken after a recital as she posed for my father in a skirt made for her by a family friend. She's a better poser than she was a dancer (at 6 or 7), but she's better yet with this:

I just took this pic like 3 minutes ago... what do you think? I like how you can see the reflecton of the outside of the windows in the window. (Wow.. that kinda sounds confusing)

Very nice pic! Due to this thread, i'm online looking for a new digi camera that I can start to play with. My wife has one, but I don't so this will be my excuse hah! It's something i've wanted to do for a while anyways.

Here's the first photo that I'm somewhat proud of from my first two rolls of shooting with a Holga. This is the Mission de Concepcion in San Antonio. Retouched only to remove a couple of scratches and noise.

Let me know what you guys think!

which effect do you mean bud?

The black and white but not so black and white...How the child in the picture isnt quite black and white but more of a pale color (if I am explaining that right)

You said something about the saturation greatly reduced...Was that just a photoshop edit?

oh, i see - sorry about that :)

i just dragged the saturation bar down untill i was happy with it :). i actually desaturated the sky fully and the foreground separately but thats pretty easy to do by using the lasso selection tool.

cheers.
