Is this 'iPhone' the same thing as the 'ROKR'? Hasn't it been out for a while?

If so, what's all the hubbub about?

Yes, it's the same as the ROKR...actually it's worse than the ROKR, which had a great music player and UI built into the device...if you run you can still catch the latest ROKR at motorola.com...good luck!

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'...

I just drove by--at 2pm Central time, there were about 20 people lined up outside the at&t store in Evanston, Illinois (the home of Northwestern University, just across the border from Chicago).

My first thought was, "Hmm, isn't the store surely gonna have 20 iPhones?"

(I love the iPhone--I just hate Crapular/Stinkular/SBC/"The New at&t" )

What are they going to do with all those iPhone ad blankets after today?

Please tell me you're kidding...

Well, his nickname is "mazola"... which is a type of corn oil, if that says anything.

Hey, isn't that ROKR thing basically the same thing as Al Roker? Come to think of it, the iPhone has a weather widget, doesn't it?

Hmmm... weather = Roker = ROKR = iPhone

What's next, the Morley SaferPhone? It's so old it either falls asleep or dies on you in the middle of a conversation.

do you think that the calendar icon on the homescreen of the iphone will actually show the real date or will it be stuck like July 17th on the tiger dock?

Actually, it is going to create a new calendar system. The calendar-- or iCalendar, as it will now be called--will now begin with the first day - Day 1 -- being equivalent to our 7/29/07. Day 2 will be 7/30/07, etc. So all you will need will be a single number.;)

Any bets on how many hours until some dork mods his calendar to spit out Stardates (from Star Trek)?

Star Wars fans ... I know what you're gonna say in retort; I'll save you the trouble... "Aurabesh language support!"

Cynics and hecklers I have you covered too... Yes, I'm a bigger dork for knowing what Stardates and Aurabesh are. I'll shake my own head in shame, thank you.

:D

Is this a serious question?

Just head on down to apple.com/iphone quick and check it out!

On your advice, I checked out the site. I also took some time to do some research and, by the looks of things, Apple's going to have a tough time convincing people to jump on board with this one, they have some catching up to do.

Here are the facts:

Crap... Well I guess I better leave my place near the front of the line at the Apple store to go grab a ROKR... OH MAN I'M MISSING OUT.

*puke*

I'd laugh if this thing doesn't work right.:D

(I'm sure it will work well, it would just be funny for all the people forking over $600 and waiting in lines for hours if there was some major glitch)

I don't know why you Moto guys even bother to badmouth the iPhone. You aren't going to convince anyone and you just look pathetic.

Here's to Apple's 500,000 sales, iPhone weekend!

Wow, so you think that makes iPhone less of a breakthrough portable device?

Also, make sure to get all of the facts straight. I believe the iPhone can hold more than 100 songs. The iPhone can also play videos. The iPhone has gigs more storage. The iPhone.......should I continue?
I can't wait to get mine! The Family plan is better than the one I'm on with T-Mobile.

Has any one product ever gotten this kind of red-carpet rolled out for it?

YES Remember when one Virgin Mega Store forgot to put them (ZUNES) out on the release day and finally got a couple out of the back room and shoved them behind a crapload of iPods!!!

I think posts such as this are missing the point...

The iPhone is an entirely different class of user experience that centers on the interface, the usability parameters/specifications (that is, the requirements Apple set forth on interface ergonomics and physical handset characteristics that make it an easy, elegant, integrated device to use).

Products are more than the sum of their parts. Yes, both a Buick and a Mercedes SL65 have cupholders and four wheels... but drive one and the other and try telling me it's the same experience.

Multitouch as a concept is a huge shift in interface design that Apple seems to want to push into a number of devices, including potentially iPods and Macs.

Keyboards, mice, desktop folder hierarchies... these things worked very well when a computer stored a handful of your documents. Now, with some document folders holding in the tens of thousands of files, that type of navigation is quickly turning into a nightmarish anachronism.

So you've got researchers at places like Perceptive Pixel looking to redefine how we interact with computers and other everyday electronic devices... to make navigation more intuitive, capable of doing more but in a less complicated manner.

The definition of efficiency is for the end result to be of greater magnitude than the work input into the system. If it takes more work on your part to configure an operation than the output you produce then that is an inefficient, inelegant solution.

It doesn't matter what number of features a phone possesses if the majority of them are designed so clunky as to be a painful user experience. If a phoine with three features is designed brilliantly such that each of the features is a pleasure to use, that's a successful niche product.

There are all kinds of successful niche products... Steve Jobs once pointed out, in response to criticisms with the hefty price of Macs that Porsche doesn't seem to be complaining about being a niche product with a high entry price.

I just read a Time article where one complaining point was that people might not want to be locked into having to pay for a data plan if all they want to use is the phone and voicemail... My thought there is, there's a different kind of phone for that kind of customer. Is that a gamble for Apple? Sure it is, as has been every other product they make where quality (of the product, of the user experience, etc.), not quantity (of features, of options/add-ons), has been the emphasis.

There are a large number of consumers, myself included, whose philosophy is that it's better to do a handful of things right than plenty of things wrong. Apple seems to have no problem finding us.
