You're still missing the point. Blackberry provides a means for the average user to run pirated android apps.

If Chevy cuts keys to allow people to steal Ford cars, they're still an accessory to the theft. Even if the flaw was with the original cars, they're the ones who are exploiting it.

It's a disgrace that BB says one thing, but turns around and does another. It reeks of desperation.

But you are missing the point --- the average user is the ios/android developer. Some of the highest profile games and apps are developed by one man operations (temple run is developed by a husband and wife team).

Tell me what Blackberry can do without alienating the teenage developers/users who write the open letters complaining about every little thing like registering your real name to get a Blackberry developer account.

It's a disgrace to blame Blackberry for every little thing that they have no control over. There are plenty of very valid complaints against RIM in how they ran themselves into the ground --- unfortunately your complaint is not one of them.

You're kidding me, right?
Get a clue... http://forums.crackberry.com/android-app-sideloading-f279/

18,000 posts about side loading android apps and you think it's only developers?

I already explained exactly what Blackberry can do to help alleviate the issue, you just seem more content on arguing than actually paying attention to the problem. Require use of a debug token for side loading. If you're a registered developer who is legitimately porting their app, you will have a debug token. Problem solved, or at least reduced.

Crackberry is not owned by Blackberry. Why don't you complain about why Apple doesn't shut down MacRumors' very own jailbreaking forum?

No, you didn't explain exactly what Blackberry can do --- because they already have debug tokens which you didn't think that they did.

RIM already had individual developers to send in their real names to get a developer account (and debug token). Then the open letter killed that.

How do you regulate whether someone is a legitimate developer --- like how every underaged teenager verify that they are over 18 years old on porn sites?

Crackberry disproves your point that the average side loader is a developer. 18,000 posts show the opposite.

I already mentioned debug tokens earlier. I am also a developer and very aware of their existence and usage. They are not required to sideload android apps. Making them required would help the problem.

You seem to be getting lost in your own arguments. You also seem to only post about Blackberry here at macrumours, and often post mis-information. Do you perhaps have something at stake here? I would advise that if you're a Blackberry employee, spreading mis-information and deflecting legitimate concerns is not a good business practice.

If you're a rabid fanboy of some sort, then you've taken a wrong turn and ended up at Macrumors.

I'm enjoying this discussion.... [reaches for popcorn] :)

in other 'lighter' news, i find myself really like the official blackberry flip cover for the z10. Works just like the iPad smart cover and is great :)

I enjoy discussion too, but this guy isn't interested in discussion. Post history shows him concentrating completely on Blackberry related posts. Seems to be an employee or misguided fan.

In the spirit of discussion though, how do you feel about loading a leaked OS onto that phone? The 10.2 update is floating around out there. It won't be official for quite a while, but there are some interesting new features n it.

----------

Will do... Need to look how to capture a screenshot :)

Power + volume button :)

Thanks for that, and yeah if its not too hard I'm willing to flash the 10.2 update - as long as I can go back if I have any problems :) I was already looking at what some folks at Crackberry were posting about it :)

It's not too tricky, just have to follow the steps (usually involves installing a developer OS first).
There's a new quick-reply feature similar to the actionable notifications that Android already has, and iOS will hopefully have soon. They've also updated some of the system apps that were the old, laggy Adobe Air based apps.

----------

Debug token is only required to sideload Android apps that execute native Android code. The apps aren't even officially supported by Blackberry, and can't be submitted to BB World.

All other Android apps can be loaded easily with no debug token.
http://t.crackberry.com/how-sideload-android-applications-blackberry-q10

Nice try though.

Nice try though.

A debug token is ALWAYS required to sideload Android apps to BB10/Playbook. Even the command line tool provided by Blackberry themselves for pure Dalvik apps without native codes requires debug token.

http://developer.blackberry.com/and...paring_android_apps_for_bbtos_1729415_11.html

The reason why you think that a debug token is not needed is because somebody already put in the debug token for you when they converted the Android apps or that 3rd party sideloading tools automatically put in the debug token for you.

Nice try --- but you have a fundamental misunderstanding on the sideloading process. You are basically arguing that your car doesn't require transmission gears to run because you never have to shift gears yourself when you drive --- but the problem is that your car has automatic transmission, that's why you don't have to shift gears.

Oh dear, you seem to be confusing a debug token with signing keys. Here's a real simple lesson for you champ:

A debug token is tied to a single device, and expires after 30 days. An app that is distributed with a debug token will not run on any other device. Debug tokens are designed to let developers test their applications before signing and uploading to BB World.

Signing keys are used to sign a Blackberry app (including repackaged Android ports) and allow them to be installed on any device.

You'd think a RIM employee would know this stuff...sheesh.
Any more misinformation you'd like to spread?

The reason why you think debug token and signing is not required for sideloading is because SOMEBODY ELSE did it for you on crackberry forums and then distribute it on the net.

Quote: "I'll convert and sign, but won't test."

http://forums.crackberry.com/android-app-sideloading-f279/lendos-apk-bar-thread-766811/

And everybody can sign because the open letters killed the verified ID process that RIM previously had.

Wow this is fun being on the other side of one of these arguments. I have been in a few myself, but this is really fun. I don't know too much about blackberry anymore since the last one I had was in like 2006, but this sure is fun. Lets keep it up guys.

Nice attempt to slowly alter your argument too. "debug token and signing is not required for sideloading" lol

Lol it's pretty fun to be in one like this, where you have all the proof in the world to back you up, while you watch the other party squirm. Glad I could provide some entertainment :)

Thanks. Yea I have gotten in some heated ones on here. Both on the side of android and iOS. I play it way more neutral now because I like both. Again I have no idea which one of you is right. Maybe back in 2006 I would have because I try to find everything I can about the phones I own, but not having a BB I have no idea about any of it. Still fun.

Same here usually, although sometimes a person who spreads a bit too much mis-information needs to be put in their place. He seems to be doubling back on himself now though, and refusing to read the proof provided. I suppose I could make a quick video demonstrating the process, but I assume he'd find a way to argue that as well. Anyone reading the thread who has a passing interest in this stuff (it is actually quite an interesting topic) is more than welcome to follow the links and read for themselves.

I'm platform agnostic and I think we're all privileged to have access to so many mobile OS options, with more on the way. I also feel very lucky to be a developer and have access to a whole host of devices to test and play with.

Yet in an earlier post I said signing is required. Oh dear, your straw man is starting to blow away in the wind.

I am sorry, but you are confusing me right now.

What is your actual point about Blackberry's deficiency?

After the open letters killed (1) Blackberry developer's sign-up fee and (2) verified ID process --- it doesn't matter what technical solutions Blackberry decides to put up, nothing could have worked to prevent what is happening right now. If Blackberry bans one particular signing key, people will just get another one --- no sign-up fee and no verified ID process.

You might as well talked about elaborate technical solutions to prevent kids from accessing porn sites (which kids will figure out how to bypass in a few hours) or elaborate registration process to get medical marijuana. Meanwhile that kid friendly internet filter is causing all kinds of frustrations for the parents themselves because false positives are preventing the parents to access certain legitimate websites.

This is not a technical issue, this is a process issue which the open letters have prevented Blackberry from doing anything that would be meaningful.

As kind of a tech geek that owns a lot of phones I would love to learn more about BB again. I did love my Curve, but BB just can offer what my iphone 5 or nexus 4 can offer. I would love to get the Q10, but with it just being a secondary phone I can't see spending $500. I am learning more and more though from this thread, and from your argument. Fun and educational cant beat that.

If you just want to mess around with the OS10 itself and don't care about having a physical device, Blackberrys developer simulators do an ok job of letting you see how the platform functions.
