I ended up getting a $75 external burner on ebay, works fine.

I was asking above about changing DTS soundtrack to AC3. I really don't want to go back to DPL just to get better picture using ATV.

Do I need another software program to do that conversion? handbrake won't seem to do it (dts -> AC3)

You're talking about the panasonic uj series, right? (the slim notebook usb drive) I thought that was a BD reader and a regular DVD burner - or does it burn Blu ray discs as well?

I'm not sure who makes it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250468867331&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_1389wt_1167 is the link where I bought it.

It does NOT burn Blu-ray, I'm sorry if I gave that impression. It does burn others though, so mac will let it read BR disks.

real quick question. I have a couple HD mkv files I need to convert to something that handbrake can handle. What's the best program for that? I have a mac and pc so either one works.

thx

MKV is only a container. What are the video and audio codecs? Have you tried opening the files with the current HB svn snapshot?

what is HB svn snapshot? When I put it in HB it seems to be able to read it but always unexpectedly quits after a few minutes of converting.

I'm downloading mkvtools now.

Handbrake works fine on MKV's

Use it all the time.

If Handbrake is crashing, try a reboot on your machine and then try again.

Getting Blu-ray rips to the Apple TV is getting easier. If you're interested, this guide should help you get going. It's not cheap, but it's pretty easy to do. First, the list of items that you need:

6. Handbrake svn2592 (free Mac app that has excellent Blu-ray support)

So when I use handbrake svn2592 and then try to watch the video via Quicktime once its finished...I just get a Quicktime quit unexpectedly error???

Im using the apple tv preset for a dvd file.

Any ideas?

I had this problem with Quicktime, too. When I updated to iTunes 8.2.1 the problem went away. Can you open the file in another app, such as Plex or VLC? I was even before the iTunes update/restart.

I used makemkv to create a rip of a blu-ray disk.

I then used the latest version of handbrake as listed in this thread to encode it. It was a DTS disk. I used the settings listed in this thread except I don't think I changed anything from default on the audio.

The resulting file will play fine in itunes on my mac pro but when I try to play it on the ATV I get only a black screen - no video and no audio.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting? I've encoded it twice, same result. The file is only about 2.5GB if I remember right, not very big at all.

What settings did you use in Handbrake? Apple TV preset or something else?

As in the first post, I used apple TV preset, changed width to 1280 (x544), none anamorphic, 24FPS. Audio source was DTS and Audio codec AAC (core audio) with DPLII mixdown and track 2 AAC (faac).

Sounds like all of the right settings. However, I have been setting all of my recent Blu-Ray rips up for playback on Plex (full 1080p) so i may be missing something.

So, it shows up under the ATV's Front Row menu, but when you select it you get nothing? Is there anything even playing, or is it just a black screen?

Yes i can see it, select it and it will even ask the "restart from beginning" question, but when it "starts" I see just a black screen, no sound, nothing else on the monitor.

Very strange - I just tried to pull it up in itunes and when it plays there I also am now getting just a black screen and no audio. The timer ticks along top but nothing else.

I could have sworn it played before in itunes.

The file info says MPEG-4 file, 2.32GB 164kbps, total bit rate 2712 kbps, video dimensions 1280x544, video codec h.264

Hmm, that's strange. If you can get iTunes to serve it to the ATV then it should play. Try opening it in VLC or Plex to see if it plays in those two apps. If so, then it suggests there's a Quicktime issue here.

The m4v file opened with vlc shows a very quick (1/4 sec or so) title change in the vlc window, but does not play.

The original .mkv played for a minute or so in full 1080p but then vlc crashed on me.

he has already transcoded it twice. :(

This is getting stranger.

I went back and transcoded it again (3rd time) making sure i had everything exactly like post 1 suggests.

The m4v file once completed was able to be opened by vlc - audio and video appeared normal.

However, once I sent it to itunes (via metaX) and tried to open it, I get the same problem and now when I try to open it with VLC again I have the same problem, it won't play.

That is so bizarre, because the file is copied to my itunes drive, which is physically separate from the original. (I tried playing both, neither one works now)

Right now this is the only blu-ray disk I have to test. I suppose it could be some bizarre problem with this particular disk (Knowing) but I'm totally stumped.

well the only logical explanation is that metaX is wrecking it. have you tried playing it without the information added via metaX?

or it might just be the movie, what is it? might be worth trying a different movie.

I had some problems with a previous version of MetaX occasionally corrupting video files. However, I have not had that problem in quite a while. I agree with the previous post. Import into iTunes without using MeatX and see if the problem goes away.

Help

Hey there,
So, I followed the instructions exactly, but for some reason my converted MPEG4 file won't play on my AppleTV. I can play it on both my PC and Mac, but after adding to my iTunes library and syncing it to AppleTV, it doesn't even show up on my AppleTV. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks,
Nate
