Hey there,
So, I followed the instructions exactly, but for some reason my converted MPEG4 file won't play on my AppleTV. I can play it on both my PC and Mac, but after adding to my iTunes library and syncing it to AppleTV, it doesn't even show up on my AppleTV. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks,
Nate

Are you sure it's not there? If it syncs, then it should be in your ATV's xml database because that update is done before the file is copied to the ATV's hard drive.

Yes

Yes I'm sure. I'm not actually copying the file onto the ATV hard drive. I'm trying to stream it. But I've been able to do this with the few HD movies I purchased through the iTunes Store.

I've tried it 3 times now. When I add the video file to iTunes, it adds fine, and will play fine, but when I click on my ATV and select the movies tab, the movie shows up there, but it's greyed out. ? And it does not even appear in the ATV menus

OK, when you said "sync" I assumed you meant sync (which is copying the file over to the Apple TV's drive), as opposed to streaming, which is what you're doing.

So there is something about your transcoded file that is rendering it outside of the ATV's parameters. Can you open the file in MPEG Streamclip and tell us its video bit rate and its fps?

I'm not sure how to find the fps, but the bitrate 5298 Kbps. Sorry I'm a newbie to this stuff.

Nevermind, just found it... 23.98 fps.

Also, I'm doing this on a Windows PC (ick, I know, trying to save up for a Mac, love my MacBook). I don't believe that should make a difference though.

Also, is there any way to pull the chapter markers off of the blu ray and make the equivilent chapter markers for the final video?

OK, that's perfectly fine. How about the video bit rate?

If you're using Handbrake's Apple TV Preset to start, it should be fine (unless there are differences I'm not aware of).

Unfortunately, it is a rather convoluted process using AnyDVD HD rips. There's a thread over at the Handbrake forums by Nightstorm (I think) that details this. On the Mac side, Make MKV rips in such a way that chapters are preserved with the Handbrake snapshot.

How about the video bit rate?

I'm not sure what the video bit rate turned out to be, but I do know that I set the average bit rate to 4500 within Handbrake (personally I prefer this to the Constant Bit Rate).

On a different note, where are you in relation to Düsseldorf? I lived in Mühlheim and Oberhausen for about a year. Speak fluent German. Loved it there.

I'm beginning to suspect it has something to do with doing it under Windows.

I was thinking the same exact thing, so I started transferring the blu-ray files over to my MacBook.

I'll let you know either way how it works out.

That seemed to do the trick. For some reason the Windows version of Handbrake made the file unreadable for the AppleTV, but encoding it on my MacBook worked like a charm.

I tried to locate the thread by Nighstorm but have been unsuccessful. As far as the Mac side, what do you mean by MKV rips? Any detail you can give me on the topic of keeping chapters from a blu ray rip (for both Mac and Windows) would be great. Thanks a bunch.

I think he was referring to the one linked below; I could probably update this post a little with the features of the recent dev snapshots (nothing to do with chapters though).

Yep, it's been like that through every SL beta. Feedback has been sent to the guys at SmartLabs, let's hope for an update.
Great to see that the other program that's experienced the same problem for me through the betas, DVD2OneX, has been updated now that SL is here.

I use tsMuxeR in Parallels/Windows, so SL doesn't break it for me ;)

The reason for using it in Windows is that I pipe my rips via tsMuxeR in one step, and AnyDVD must be run in Windows already.

Another Question, when im in windows and I rip and blu-ray in anydvd, and then put it into ts muxer, halfway through the movie the audio if off about 10 seconds or so, why is that? it only happens with a couple of movies.. same issues anyone?

well the only logical explanation is that metaX is wrecking it. have you tried playing it without the information added via metaX?

or it might just be the movie, what is it? might be worth trying a different movie.

It's taken me some time to retest this but it appears that MetaX is the problem.

If I go directly from Handbrake to MKV or Itunes, the movie plays fine, but if I run it through MetaX I have the issues I described above. this is also happening with normal DVD, not just blu-ray.

So are you all using metaX to populate the info on movies, or is there something more stable that I could use (I hope!)?

wow, my guess was right for once! that doesnt happen very often ;) good to know im on the right track.

i am not aware of any other good programs, but there would DEF be some more.

So, is the main benefit of copying Bluray rather than standard DVD is to increase the resolution that the video plays in? Specifically, say your standard DVD is 640x480. With Blueray, you are increasing you video to play at 1280 lines (with this process). If full 1080P is 1920 lines of resolution, what does this procedure equate to?

What is the reason for using AnyDVD HD? Could you not just use handbrake and select the actual BD as the source? Why does a copy need to be on the HDD for this to work. The only reason I ask, is because I have used HB in this way with DVDs.

Thanks
