That's why I said there's a hole in the theory... :)

Thanks for the response btw. No, I didn't check the "large file support" in HB. I'm still new to this transcoding business so I wasn't aware of that.

Did a quick search in HB forums and it seems that this is necessary. Is 4GB the file size limit where you need to tick "large file size"?

I'll retry it again with the "large file size". Thanks again for the input.

yup "large file size" is the correct button to tick. i thought it was only for iPods and stuff but clearly it isnt. its worth checking it! see how you go :)

no problems replying :D got nothing better to do!

Incredible Hulk BR

Has anyone been able to successfully create an mkv from the Incredible Hulk (New one) with Makemkv?

When I open this file and choose what I think is the appropriate fileset (19 chapters and around 20GB) I end up with a file that is only 13GB and handbrake reads the duration as only 1 hr and 13 minutes. I am not sure what is going on with this one. This is the first movie I have tried that has done this.

Thanks.

tsMuxer finishing prematurely

Is anyone else having a problem with tsMuxer finishing prematurely? Quite often it'll get to 66% or some other percentage and yet it claims it's "finished" even though clearly it's not. I'm baffled.

I fought the Hulk and the Hulk won :D. This is the only blu ray I haven't been able to convert to either mp4 or mkv. Or I should say, I haven't been able to convert the whole movie to mp4 or mkv. The mp4 stops right about where you mention. So I just...you know...put the blu ray in the player :). Seriously, if you figure this one out, please post back. I'd love to add this one to my media server also.

Took a while but thanks to the guide I successfully managed to rip and convert Gladiator for the Apple TV. Took ages ripping it using dd on the PS3, then followed the guide. Handbrake took 13 hours to encode it! Currently working on Braveheart and The Dark Knight. Any ideas on how long it will take to get a Mac alternative to AnyDVD HD?

Wow! That takes an eternity to convert. Its like 1.5hrs on my i7 imac lol...

Not sure on a mac alternative :(

is anybody aware of a gui program that can convert DTS to ac3 from mkv rips?

Going from a 1080p mkv to a 720p m4v with handbrake on the AppleTV setting proceeds at about 24fps on my i5 iMac. So, conversions happen in real time -- a two hour movie takes about two hours to convert. But I was having problems with the 64 bit version and I'm still using the 32-bit version. I imagine when I switch to a stable 64-bit version, my performance will see a boost.

i didnt really experience a performance boost. maybe 10% faster. :(

I have converted a couple of movies now with CQ instead of ABR at 5000, but I´m not satified with the quality CQ gives, somtimes so low bitrate as 1500 kbit/sek. Tweaking RF is so boring and often resluts in to high bitrate in actions-scenes even with bitrate and buffer strings.

But now to my real problem. I hope to leave the windows world completely. Ripping with MakeMkv is excellent, convert Dts to AC3 is a pain but works. But when it comes to subtiles it´s stop. I have extract the subtitle with tsmuxer to a sup-file but I need a srt-file. Someone told me to convert the sup to a sub-file and open with Jubbler but it gives me only a bunch of "%¤%¤%&". I tried to start Suprip with Crossover with no luck. Any suggestions?

sorry, i cant offer a solution to subtitles because i dont care for them. but can i inquire how you convert DTS to ac3? :)

The solution in the first post. Hard to make it work, but when you got it to work it´s a ok solution.

Hi all, sorry if these questions have been answered but I'm pretty new to the world of blu ray ripping and was looking at the best way to do it.

1) Can the latest Apple TV (with 3.0.1 I'm assuming) be hacked still to allow for an external hard drive? I'd like to connect via USB a 2TB hard drive to store movies on it. Also, can the usual Front Row interface see the movies on the external HD or do I need to install Boxee in order to view them?

2) What are the general file sizes of 1280x720 blu ray rips? Around 20 gigs?

3) Would a Mac Mini be better? I'd rather not spend $599 if the same could be done on a $229 Apple TV. I don't mind encoding to 1280x720 as I personally can't tell much difference between 720p and 1080p.

4) I assume there isn't any stuttering that happens during playback even on the Apple TV's processor?

Thanks in advance :)

I run the 64-bit version on my 2.8 core duo iMac. I get 5-7fps when encoding from 1080p to 720p - which takes forever. Also, occasionally the encodes will have jumps and pixelation, which may occur when the Mac has to do something other than encode, forcing me to run it again.

I see an i7 in my future...

say hello to 18+fps with one of them babies ;)

the stutters shouldnt be happening. just because its a little slower at processing doesnt mean that the program will "fault". are you sure your settings are correct?
