Any tips for encoding a concert Blu-Ray where the video is 30fps? I have ripped several Blu-Ray's to 720p for the Apple TV and a 720x480 anamorphic copy for my iPhone/portable use, and the files look great, they're decent size and encoding time isn't too bad (roughly 3 - 4 hours per movie).

However, these are 23.976 fps films. If I try encoding a 30fps blu-ray, the encoding time is four times as long, and the file size is about four times bigger as well. Concerts generally use more bitrate and are bigger files when using quality-based encode settings, but this is a bit extreme... it does me no good to have an 8gb 720p m4v video... I need 4GB or less. I set the output quality to 4GB but the difference in quality was negligible from the 480p video, and the picture was choppy due to dropped framerate.

My guess is I'm just SOL, but I figured I'd ask anyways.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the :apple:TV cannot accepted anything over 24 fps so you may want to try setting the encode to that and see if you get better results.

All of my HD encodes are for the Apple TV, but all of my films are at 23.976fps, so I don't have to change that... I just use the "same as source option". It's only this one disc I'm having problems with because its 30fps. I already encoded it at 24fps with the constant quality set at default, but the file was over 8GB (as opposed to the normal 2.25 - 4gb I get with films). I'm guessing that lowering the frames per second is what's causing the slow encode time (four or five times longer to encode this film than other films).

I guess I'm just going to be stuck with a crappy 4GB HD video, or a decent file that's over 8GB in size.

The SD version converted from the Blu-Ray looks good though.

Surprising, I haven't been able to find an encode yet that exhibits any problems since adding this to my string, and have heard similar results from others in #handbrake. I've re-encoded about half of my Bluray/HDDVD collection and haven't witnessed any stuttering problems.

A little update, my problem was an old custom preset with "Weighted B-Frames" checked. After many grey hairs I discovered that. When I unchecked everything runs smooth again with the following settings:

RF: 19.5
Advanced string: cabac=0:ref=3:me=umh:b-adapt=2:weightb=0:trellis=0:weightp=0:no-fast-pskip=1:no-dct-decimate=1:vbv-bufsize=5000:vbv-maxrate=14000:direct=auto

I've had the same issue with some encodes from Blu Ray rips. To counter the problem, I set the target file size to 4GB and re-encoded. However, someone smarter than me on this board suggested the best way to go is to lower the constant quality from 60% (default) to 59% or 58%, and see if that works. Apparently, it's not the file size that's freaking out the ATV, it's the bitrate.

Of course, I haven't come across this problem since, and I'm not going to re-encode the problem files (Hurt Locker, Terminator Salvation and one other whose name escapes me) until I've caught up on everything else. So I can't report whether this process is any better, but it sounds like it makes sense to me.

I don't know if it is setting the FPS to 24, but a straight encode from a pre-ripped Blu Ray file takes 4 - 6 hours on my Mac (see sig. for specs). And while it's doing that, I have to leave it alone as it really can't handle anything else.

I understand that MakeMKV can be used running under Mac, but, I will still need an external Blu-Ray drive that is Mac compatible, correct?? I can't stick a blu-ray disc in my optical drive and MakeMKV will rip it?

Also, any recommendations for an external blu-ray drive for Mac?

As I will be doing this on a MacBook Pro...

Thanks for any info/help!!

correte-o! all drives are mac compatible though lol. but go with a well known brand

Trying my hand at BRD ripping for the first time, but on another note I just got back from Frys, picked up an external dvd enclosure and a Samsung SH-B083L drive and everything worked flawlessly.

Plugged the new drive in, tossed The Dark Knight into the drive and Finder found the disc right away but wouldn't play any files.. of course.

Proceeded to download MakeMKV-> ripped to HDD-> opened Handbrake -> AppleTV setting, framerate 24, pic settings to 1280x528 and its currently saying 1:55minutes.

Hoping everything turns out.

Nice...and very jealous. Just started ripping/transcoding my blu-rays as well but isn't quite so speedy on my Mac Mini--usually takes 8-10 hours, sometimes longer, depending on the film.

Well ripping was approx 1:20mins and encoding so far said approx 2 hrs so a good 3 1/2hrs from start to finish but I'll pay closer attention next go around and post back how everything turned out.

Will post back later if the settings worked properly.

The main TV we watch ATV on is only a 720p HD in the bedroom, usually only watch the 1080 when company is over.

on a side note... Streaming from MakeMKV, a 1080 movie, full screened on the new 27"....holy hell!!!

im confused. what speed is your BD drive? it takes me about 1.5hrs to rip from PS3 over the network!

then 20mins to convert in makemkv

DoFoT, if you don't mind me asking, how are you ripping with PS3? I have a PS3 sitting right next to my iMac... that if I can use the PS3, it will save me a couple hundred dollars from having to buy a Blu-ray drive and an enclosure..

Thanks for any help/info you can provide...

I was replying to mmomega's statement that HB was giving him an estimate of 1 hr 55 min to complete the transcode. Ripping into .mkv using MakeMKV only takes about 45 min to an hour (8X BD drive--usually reaches about 4X max during rip). The transcode in Handbrake is what takes so long--usually avg. about 5 fps so a 2 hour movie takes almost 9-10 hrs.

FSUSem1noles---I believe this is the thread you are looking for.

i have a variant of linux (yellow dog linux) installed onto my ps3. its a slight mission to do though, but its worth it imo.

Forced Subtitles

Hey there,
I know this subject has already been brought up, as I've been reading the threads, but I'm still a little confused.

How exactly can I get forced subtitles into my encodes? I'm using Mac, but also have Windows.

Where exactly is the subtitle file inside the blu-ray file structure?

Thanks,
Nate

as soon as i decrpyt with MakeMKV and clicked the 1st title, there were the subtitles.

So far with the settings I've used, the Video turned out great. 25GB down to 2.6GB. Quality still looks great on the imac, xferring atm to try it out on the ATV.

Edit: Just ran the movie on the bedroom tv, 32" 720p HDTV and everything looked great, no stutters. Overall very happy with how it turned out and the ending size at just over 2 1/2GB. The movie shows up in ATV as HD, just need to add any metadata to make everything look "pretty".
I still have to thank Cave Man for all of the info he has contributed to the forums.

Ok, I set my PS3 up last night for blu-ray burning, burned 2 owned movies, both were successful, on the Mac side I'm using MakeMKV to convert the iso.

When I try to open the iso on the Mac side with MakeMKV it keeps coming up with an error "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted"

Now, I checked a few other forums, came across a site that has volume keys listed I found one for Superbad, used it and it worked fine, I'm trying the ones listed for Fantastic 4: 2 but none of the listed volume keys are working.

If I use an external blu-ray player/dvd or cd writer, will MakeMKV still run into this problem?? is it the fact that it's an iso file or is it a MakeMKV issue..

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how to get through this dilemma..

Any help would greatly be appreciated! thanks..

please dont be angry!

the SIMPLEST way to get this to work is to.

1. buy anydvd HD (or torrent ;))
2. install it to bootcamp/VM

now. when you make the ISO from ur ps3, give anydvd hd the iso, then create another iso, then use the 2nd iso and give that to makemkv. works a treat :)

Do, thanks so much for the reply, I figured I'd have to go a different route, Would VMFusion be adequate to run this? because if so, I could just fire that up..
