@tsialex Is there also happening an automatic firmware upgrade, when I create a installer usb stick and install from this stock? Or must I run the Apple software updates in the settings?

Firmware updates for Macs that have automatic updates are done by a service in the background, when a firmware update is released and you are using the current macOS version, the firmware update is done automatically.

If you are using let's say High Sierra, you won't get the Catalina firmware updates until Apple releases it for High Sierra, usually with a Security Update down the road.

Thanks for the clarification. I switched from my Mac Pro 5,1 to a MacBook Pro and was wondering how they get installed there.
Does this background service need a reboot to flash the rom?

I have a potentially related issue. I upgraded to Catalina:

I upgraded my Late 2015 27" iMac to Catalina when it was released this month. Now, about once a week I wake up to a message "Your Computer Has Detected A Potential Problem", and there is a file open called "EFICHECK.DUMP".

The other day, I decided to clean out my hard drive, and install Catalina fresh from the recovery mode, and this morning once again woke up to this error.

I went to System Report and it shows that I have Boot Rom Version (Firmware) "170.0.0.0.0" but according to this site it should be 173.0.0.0.0

https://eclecticlight.co/2019/10/08/which-efi-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-4/

Could this be the issue? How does one fix this? I already did 2 installs (one from scratch) of Catalina. Computer runs fine, no crashes or errors, ever, until this after the Catalina upgrade.

Did you replaced your 12+16 Apple OEM PCIe SSD for a standard NVMe/AHCI M.2? If so, install it back and then reinstall Catalina.

Some Macs need the original 12+16 Apple OEM PCIe SSD to do the firmware upgrade installed.

No, everything is stock from Apple. I've never opened it up or changed any hardware.

I did add extra memory, but that shouldn't affect the firmware upgrade process should it?

Apple don't keep public changelogs of what was improved with firmware upgrades, go to the NVMe thread for you MBP and ask there if people noticed any changes.

MBA 7,2 received boot ROM update with the release of macOS 10.15.3 (19D76) on January 28, 2020. It now stands at 192.0.0.0.

Any news about other boot ROM update with latest macOS 10.15.3?
May macbook pro 12,1 is actually runnning on 188.0.0.0.0 with 10.15.3 - but as I have a non apple NVME drive installed I am not sure wether boot Rom should have been updated or not?

Thanks in advance

There's a link in post 34 of this thread which lists all the current firmwares. Yours is not current.

Hey, thanks for the advice - I already checked that page, but was kind of missled, as the date stated the articles is of last year. Reading it correctly I recognized that the list itself has been updated.
Thanks!

Does anybody know if the battery has to be installed in a MBP for a firmware update to happen? Or the connected power adapter is enough?

Well, you can try, since all a computer needs is power, and boot ROM probably has nothing to do with being battery-powered or direct plug-in. Try!

Yes, I actually already updated my MacBookPro7,1 with just a power adapter connected but there was no Boot ROM update. I just wanted to confirm. I know that High Sierra is at the end of its support, just waiting to see if Apple issues one last firmware update for this machine.
