HP workstations easily exceeded 4GB of RAM many often meeting the 32GB official maximum of the Mac pro and a few exceeding it.

As for durability I do not consider the cMP to be all that durable. It is easily damaged in shipping and it scuffs / scratches easily. It's a nice design but durability is not as good as the Z6x0 and Z8x0 series systems.
Maybe OP was more thinking of the 4GB limitations of Windows 32bit at that time. 64bit didn’t really reach the PC desktop in a widespread fashion until Windows 7, so many OEMs didn’t even ship systems with more than 4GB. The systems likely supported more RAM, but the Windows version that was installed did not. We transitioned to 64bit as driver support improved.

Yep your right.. They sure do easily get scratched that's why I'm careful with it.... Because every Mac case that I bought (for my project) got damage (The handles were bent real bad) when they arrived at my door...But in the end I was able to get a good one because it came in it's original box, so it wasn't damage during shipping.. But as for the ram you can get 8GB dimms and have 64GB in a Mac pro 2008..

That's a possibility however the comments area related to the hardware. Even if so there were 64-bit operating systems available, including a 64-bit version of XP.

I'm upgrading my Z620 from its current 64Gb to 192GB ;)

Oh yes, XP and Vista were both available in 64bit, though I recall XP-64 was more trouble than it was worth. Vista improved things quite a bit, but 4GB of RAM was considered high-end back then, and nothing on the consumer side took advantage of more than 32bit. We’ve come a long way since those days. Now I don’t think many games or other software will even run on a 32bit OS.

I think that it needs a new bios chip to be soldered on (larger capacity) because in the current one there is not enough space for a Mac efi.

Ok I do see a GTX 980 for mac pro on eBay, so I'll get that...
