NFC is a Near Field Communication. A very low power radio that will interrogate nearby (within touching distance) devices.

There are number of uses. You can beam whatever to another phone. For example, if you have YouTube video playing, put another NFC equipped phone right next to yours and tap your screen. Same video will start playing on another phone. You can do it with web pages, contacts, etc.

You can also buy NFC tags and encode them with instructions. For example, glue one to your car dock. It will enable bluetooth, disable ringtone, wifi, run an app of your choice (or activity, which is essentially a function in an app. Think "Run Pandora, and tune to my favorite mix right away" kind of thing).

Possibilities are limitless.

Just to add, below are some of the things we can do now and some are coming online soon. NFC equipped phones are the future.

Use your phone to pay for things with NfC. Pay for gas with NFC. Use NFC as your hotel card reader, instead of a card. Start your car with NFC. Use NFC instead of a swipe badge in a secure building. Use NFC tags in your house, mso when someone visits, mthey tap the tag and their phone is now automatically linked with your network. No setup required by the user.

Buying things is a big one for me. Just lay the phone on the reader at best buy, McDonald's, 711, wawa etc and accept the charge.

If you are anything like me you are usually holding your phone anyway so it's convenient. Plus it's a nice way of recording purchases vs waiting for a credit card statement or going online.

The only one I really use is near the door of my house to toggle wifi when I'm coming in/going out.

Leaving wifi on all of the time won't affect battery life on the S3. I think a lot of people are doing that out of force-of-habit from older Android phones.

Bingo. I don't want to carry a wallet, if I don't have toand with GoogleWallet, everything I purchased and will purchase is recording and receipts attached.

I like buying from Sears/KMart, Old Navy and a few other places that ask me if I would prefer an emailed electronic receipt, vice a paper one. I always prefer electronic. Not only simpler, but I like to do what little I can to save the environment. Recycle, don't use paper unless neccessary, reuse glass jars, recycle oil from oil changes... Next car will be similar to the Chevy Volt. :D

Actually it will if you have auto-find wifi networks on (or like with at&t, auto connect when near an at&t wifi hotspot (like Starbucks). If I don't turn mine off, and I drive through my neighborhood, it is constantly finding wifi networks and asking if I want to join. And everytime, the phone tries to switch between wifi and 4G, it's sucking battery.

almost returned the phone last night but played around with today alot and it really is a great phone

its just the problem with android is that out of the box its crap but once you customize it and add everything u want its a great phone

the problem im finding mostly is that i have to check every app because of the prevelance of malware in the android app store which is a huge turn off from how secure i feel in the apple app store

battery is also pretty crappy but so was the 4s so im used to it, hoping that deleting the mlb at bat widget will help matters

Hola friend, and fellow S3 user. Yes, it is smart to check apps. At least Android gives you the option. I did download an antivirus program for it just because I wanted to. If you are curious just look up "top rated antivirus for Android". Also regarding battery, there are a few apps you can get that will readily make battery maximized without having to fuss with it. I chose Juice Defender pro, but the free version is nice. Basically the nicest feature I like about it is that it controls when your phone syncs at night (rather than have it randomly sync at random times), and when your screen goes dormant or sleeps, it turns the wifi off and then when you wake the phone, turns it on. This alone saved LOTS of battery life. I can get upwards of 26hrs of use before I HAVE to charge on light useage with some games periodically. I charge it every night regardless though. On the opposite end though on heavy useage like GPS screen on, and video games etc bright light on screen due to outdoors, I can get about 17 ish ours from being off charger.

The apps that can tell you what might be waking your phone when it is supposed to be sleeping and tell you exactly WHAT is using your battery and when is: Better Battery Stats and CPU Spy. Not free but they don't cost you a mortgage either. Juice Defender alone should get you by.

Man I can't wait for all these things to become mainstream!!

It doesn't affect battery life though. It might save you the annoyance of canceling the wifi popup constantly. There's an option in settings to turn off the annoying popup asking you to join wifi networks. I have that option turned off and don't get constant popups when driving around. The battery life in standby (with wifi on) is as good or better than the iPhone with wifi on.

Battery Has Issues (to say the least)

I recently took the plunge on the SGIII and have to admit it's a very nice phone and the longest I've kept an Android phone since the N1.

However, the BATTERY SUCKS!!!

You have no further than to look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725921 thread on XDA to know I'm no Android basher and only speak truth...

I'm really wanting to like this phone as I'm bored with the iPhone but the HORRENDOUS battery life will ultimately have me taking it back.

Seems like a minority of users have battery issues. Battery life is pretty good for me and most reviewers give it solid marks. The 4.8" screen uses about 20% per hour of screen-on time though. So after 3 1/2 hours of screen time you'll be getting a low battery warning. I'm fine with charging the battery on heavy use days.

I'll bet you a million dollars any S3 you give me i can get to last longer than an iPhone 4/4S. And this is simply because there are so many variables to battery life.
First off, regardless of what is said about about wifi and 4g, if you phone is constantly trying to switch between the two or is in a low sgnal area and connects, mthen drops 4g,mthen connects, and repeat this, it will kill the battery quick. Is your phone actually in standby mode when you turn the screen off or is there an app that keeps waking it in the background? How many apps have notifications being sent to you every 5 minutes? How many apps have air push crap being sent to you? is your screen at 100% brightness allo the time? Do you use live wallpapers and widgets that constantly update (like weather widgets?)

There are so many things that effect battery life on ANY phone. You can easily get over 2 days per charge with light use. If I use mine non-stop, multitasking via numerous apps, use gps nav, Pandora, etc... You will get around 4 hours. But most people don't use their phone that heavily for 4 hours straight. With moderate usage, I get between 12 and 17 hours per charge.

All that said, if you have nothing on, nothing running in the background, no apps running and in standby mode and you lose more than 1-2% per hour, your battery could very well be bad. It does happen from time to time. Even with cars.

With an iOS device, Apple makes many of the decisions on how your phone should work for you. With an Android device, you need to make many of those decisions yourself. As you get more familiar with your phone, you can potentially get more out of an Android phone than an iOS phone. If you prefer to just have something work for you out of the box, you won't gain any advantage with Android. iOS is more complete out of the box because you don't have to actually set up your home screens. All of your apps are just there. On Android, the apps are in the app drawer which is another step to get to all of your apps. My wife just uses her iPhone for calls and texting and the occasional email. I even set up all her music on it, but she just uses her ageing iPod instead.

I had some battery issues with my SGS3. I turned off LTE and just use HSPA+ for data. That seemed to resolve the battery issue. Not sure if that was the reason. I find that often I only get HSPA coverage anyway and the speeds are what I'm used to with my old phone anyway. It's not like I'm downloading HD movies while I'm away from my home WiFi.

You see guys you've proved my point for me; with my iPhone I didn't have to worry about what was/wasn't open, rogue apps, what cellular technology was in place, etc...

All I know is that when I left work my iPhone had 40%-50% juice remaining left.

The SG3; dead by the time I leave work. Also, the phone went into safe mode on me twice.

Safe Mode!? WTF is that even doing on a cell phone!?

I know first hand that the phone is nice; however, I realize now that Android HAS TO offer a lot of gimmicks to detract from the instability of the OS.

The ongoing trial between Samsung and Apple says it all; Apple is the trendsetter and Samsung is the emulator.

Is Samsung innovating right now more than Apple!? Perhaps, however, they're still depending on Android, which while it gets the job done is Certainly no iOS.

Who cares about 2gigs of ram when the system isn't optimized to use it, or dual core 1.5Ghz processors.

S-Voice!? Complete Joke.

Listen, I don't want to go on a tirade about how bad Android is BUT I will say, it's still NOT on the level of iOS, concerning smoothness and functionality.

Take it how you want, I gave the S3 a chance BUT it's still not ready for show time.

Having to cut off WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, etc to make the phone battery last!?

WTF is the purpose of having the phone then!?

You sound like someone who didn't actually buy it. There are far more people with great reviews of this one then people who had an experience like you. And the majority of people in anything who satisfied are usually silent so that makes it great customer reviews even more of a big deal. People have reported great battery life with the s3 as well.

Yes it will. I've had the phone since may and I've tested the battery on it. Wifi and Bluetooth are constantly scanning for available networks/devices, so leaving them on affects battery life.

Never heard of safe mode on the S3 in my life, no idea what you're talking about :p

And my phone has like 60+% left when I leave work, more like 80% if I set up a Tasker profile to turn mobile data off while I'm at work.

SVoice is definitely no competitor to Siri for sure.

Safe mode is present in iPhone too. You never see it unless you jailbreak it. A lot of things many people assume are absent in the iPhone are actually working under the hood and hidden. An example is file system. It is there all the time, yet hidden until you jailbreak and install a filesystem viewer like iFile.

People complaining about battery life on S3 must be using LTE. That is a battery sucker for sure.

On HSPA+ i get same battery life i got on the iPhone. I charge every two days. MASSIVE improvement compared to any other android phone. Note that i have not rooted or hacked my phone.

However, one tip i will give you, is go to applications manager in the settings, go to the all tab, and disable anything you are never going to touch. Disabling carrier and samsung apps quickly fixed the battery issues for me. Half of the time it is the unnecessary bloatware killing the battery.

Dude, even when I was using my iP4, I never had Gps or in iOS's case, maps or any other active location based services. Logic dictates that if you have everything that you aren't using enabled on your phone you will be losing battery.

You don't have to cut off everything to use the phone effectively, but it's like leaving your car idling when you run into the mall. It uses fuel because it is constantly running, same with a phone. If LTE was part of your problem, North American chipsets haven't managed to manage power consumption effectively enough in my opinion.

I can get 21+ hours EASILY with my GS3 WITHOUT having to sacrifice performance, I don't even have the energy management features active. If battery life is your main complaint like it seems in your OP, then you have something heavy going on in the background. I already offered advice to another poster on 2-3 excellent apps that can isolate your issue. Perhaps you should try that IF battery is your main issue. But it doesn't sound like it is.

As far as us proving your point for you, your main complaint in the OP was primarily battery. Several users have told you quite patiently that YOU are responsible for driving your device with Android. If you can't handle the choice and responsibility, go back to iOS, it's simple.

I swear, people who go into major purchases without doing research annoy the hell out of me. We have SO many resources available to ensure that our purchases will be good ones, and yet so few take the time to do the research. However, they will take the time to come onto a forum and whine about it!!

Yes it will. I've had the phone since may and I've tested the battery on it. Wifi and Bluetooth are constantly scanning for available networks/devices, so leaving them on affects battery life.

I have found this to be true myself. Just the other day in my home, I had WiFi on and religiously every 5-7 seconds it would scan even though I was already on a strong signal wifi. (I am assuming this is normal behaviour?) So if there is no strong wifi, I can imagine as you are driving around and it is throwing out it's strongest seeking signal to find the Wifi, it would drain battery. Or so I have found anyways. I got 50% more battery life just controlling wifi through Juice Defender.

thats kind of his point. You dont really need to do research when getting an iphone.

I bought it and owned it for the better part of 2.5 weeks.

What I sound like is someone who has owned every iPhone and KNOWS what a OS and Battery should function like.

And asking your users not to use KEY functions of such said device IS NOT proper.

That thread I referenced, of which I read EVERY page, you hear people talking about rogue apps, custom kernels, cutting off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and gasp Cellular Data  in the name of trying to preserve battery. Let alone things like widgets, certain programs (facebook was referenced several times), and black wallpapers... ALL FOR THE SAKE OF SAVING BATTERY!?!?!?

You tell me what good is a device, if I can't USEFULLY utilize the CORE features of it!?

The phone itself is very slick, but you realize very quick that a lot that is offered is gimmicky, the PS3 controller, the video in any app feature, etc...

While that stuff makes you mouth water, it has NOTHING to do with my phone lasting though a NORMAL workday and functioning PROPERLY. Not going into safe mode or randomly crashing on me.

I REALLY REALLY; REALLY wanted to like the phone and gave it an HONEST chance in the REAL WORLD; simply put, it didn't meet my day to day needs and that my friend you can take how you want!?

if I set up a Tasker profile to turn mobile data off while I'm at work.

Again, you prove one of my points about Android.

----------

There is no "safe mode" on an Android phone. What are you talking about?

Tell that to my former GS3 when it went into that mode TWICE!!!

Google it PLEASE!!!

Not to be rude but I noticed too in my few weeks of having the phone and frequenting Android related sites; Android owners too (iPhone owners are guilty as well) are a bit on the fanatical side.

I mean these users acknowledge all of Androids shortcomings like they're normal; just like the above poster... "What safe mode"; as if I'm making ****** up!?

Seriously!? Dude, there is a safe mode and Android while fully customizable is not up to par with the OVERALL functionality of iOS.

I'm sorry guys; I only speak truth; I'm some paid schill or goof troop who doesn't know what he is talking about...

You don't have to do ANY of this with your phone. Some people like rooting or changing roms. All my previous android phones I did the same but not with the S3. I have it about 2 months now - its completely stock. Not rooted, no battery apps, no rogue apps etc.

I take my phone off charge at 7am and at midnight I have 40% left. That's with 3 email accounts, facebook, twitter, browsing, calls , texts, flipboard etc.

I can kinda see why too, concerning novices but even the Jailbreak is a buttery smooth process.

People complaining about battery life on S3 must be using LTE. That is a battery sucker for sure.

Well yeah, I mean that's one of the MAIN features of the phone and I GUARANTEE, that Apple comes up with a phone with LTE that I can USE FULLY at work ALL DAY!!! I'd bet my life on it!!!

Once again, stuff that isn't necessary on the iPhone nor should be necessary for any end user to have to deal with.

Can you do it!? Yes, but why should I!?

Plainly says to me manufactures/carriers don't care and you're on your own to figure it out... No wonder Apple is raking in the dough.
