Set up my new 12.9 Ipad Pro and initially thought it was faulty. An unsightly black bar at the bottom of my screen haunted me from app to app and when browsing.
Now I wish it was a fault. At least it could be repaired. On googling it I find it’s impossible to disable as it’s built in to the system.
Had I known about this prior to purchase I’d have saved my pennies. Who at Apple thought this was a good idea?
I’ll be returning it. With the magic keyboard. 1st world problem but I’m really annoyed about it.
I guess it’s just me because I’d never heard of it before.

You're returning it because of the return-to-home-screen bar? That same bar exists on iPhones.

Yep. My Ipad 6th Gen doesn’t have an unsightly black bar at the bottom of the screen. Neither does my Samsung Galaxy phone. It’s unacceptable. In the future if Apple come to their senses and remove it I’ll consider purchasing another. But not until then.

All you have to do is look at the iPadPro page on Apple's site to see that it is part of the UI and plainly visible. If you google "iPadPro 12.9" you will see it on lots of screens. You will see it if you watch YouTube videos about the iPadPro. On the plus side, the base iPad 10.2 is a really good iPad and since it has a home button the bar isn't visible.

That being said, we don't actually need to see it once we know how to use iOS so it should be hideable.

In its case.

The little home bar at the bottom of the screen? When using my iPad I barely notice it and it has never bothered me. I would think it’s something you can get used to and is not a big deal.

This, 100%.

All jokes aside, OP I felt the same way when I got the iPhone X and they first introduced the floating bar. But the truth is you’ll forget about it pretty quickly and eventually won’t even notice it there.

Don’t miss out on a nice experience with an iPad Pro just due to that. I highly recommend sticking with it.

I really appreciate your response. It's been a horrible decision to have to make. Because other than this eyesore it's a fantastic piece of kit. But I've finally decided I just can't stand it. I don't think I'd ever get used to it. And it sticks in my craw that I'd have to 'learn to tolerate it' when I spent nearly £1600 [including magic keyboard]. So I've organised a return. And I'll patiently wait in the vain hope that Apple will either get rid of it [highly unlikely], give us an option to disable it or even just make it transparent, like the home button.

I just have a really hard time understanding why a little bar like that is such a problem? Hate to tell you this, but unless you have an iPhone SE or 8 and older... You're going to have that little black bar. I've had every non-home iPhone, and consider myself to be particularly anal about small details like that, but even I don't think the gesture bar is annoying. This sounds like an extreme case of pickiness, which is fine, but don't play it off as a bug or bad thing lol

I do agree that there should be an option to hide it... But you do know if you're watching content or doing most things, it disappears after a few moments, right? But anyways, thanks for the good laugh lol

My initial reaction was - really? But it got me thinking about the implementation. Why does the user need that bar at all? Simple instructions as to device usage - swipe up from bottom, etc. - would seem to be adequate. Why add that bar? And why not an option for disabling it? We can needle the OP over a seeming overreaction, but we all have those little things that once noticed, can drive us nuts.

I can see why it might be an issue for some. However I guess I’ve been conditioned over the years. I had the iPhone X in 2017 with the navigation bar and all my phones since then have had it. So by the time I upgraded and got the iPad Pro in 2020 I was used to it.

If some people want it for navigation, then fine. But Apple couldn’t come up with anything less intrusive? (I’ve attached two images with the home bar cutting through text when I was browsing).
They made the Home Button transparent. But not this? Makes no sense. I showed it to a friend who was instantly ‘is that a fault’? He couldn’t believe it. Not offering the option to disable it was shortsighted. I’ll just have to hope they’ll do something about it in the future.

It does leave me scratching my head on the implementation. Different things trigger each of us - the jelly scroll on the Mini 6 is a similar example. If you really don't like a device/purchase for any reason at all, you're smart to return it. What others think is irrelevant.

I’ve had my iPhone 13 for a little over a month. After I posted about the line not bothering me on the iPad, I decided to check - it’s on the 13 also! Whenever the Dock is not present (on both devices), the little bar is present on the bottom of the screen. I had my iPhone 13 and never noticed it -
