Mark, I’m having same issue with 2 macbook pro 16inch models. I got them in March and left to sit idle for all these months and today I see this issue.

Does plugging in two cables actually fix the issue? I’m worried if that would blow the laptop. Please reply. View attachment 977779
No, this does not work. The MacBook Pro is set to only allow one port to charge the MacBook at a time. Just to test this I plugged in two known good 96W power adapters and plugged them in, one in the right front and the second in the left front ports, left charging overnight and still had the same issue. I have 3 MBP's with the exact same issue. Now I have to go to Apple to get replacements.

I have just fixed the same problem, posted the solution here:

Hope this helps.
Thanks!
This was no help. I tried these steps and as soon as i unplugged the power the trackpad would no longer push down. I tried pushing it for a good 5 minutes and never got the plug + batter icon. I then waited 10 minutes and tried to hit the power button, nothing. Thanks for the try though.

This happened to me too. I had my MBP 16 in for a repair, needed a comouter for work the next day. Bought a MBP i9 32GB 2TB 5500 8GB no start out of box, no charging. 🤦‍♂️ so I technically owned two MBP 16 lemons at the same time.

Glad to find this thread. Bought one in March 2020 and I put it in the cupboard for a rainy day. Today is the rainy day and guess what. Yeah I know that it is 10 months later but... such is life. I knew the battery would be pretty much flat over that time period but never expected the thing to not respond to the charger at all.

Peeved?

Just a bit.

Looks like I will be booking an appointment with a Genius. Hope the 1 year statutory warranty means that it will be sorted out.

Follow up....
After calling the support line and explaining that the device was still brand new and not setup the consultant asked me to do a few things like
- Press and hold the power on/off button for at least 10 seconds
- Press and hold Control + Option + Right Shift for at least 7 seconds.
- Press and hold Control + Option + Right Shift + power on/off for at least 7 seconds.
None of which had any effect.
An appt was booked with a Genius and the upshot of that was that they agreed the battery is kaput so a new upper case will be installed plus a new logic board (probably with revised firmware) and a new Touch ID board.

Quoted cost $1,688.20 but nil to self as it’s deemed warranty.

Self is happy about that.

They will notify me when it’s sorted.

No offense, but it must be nice to be able to lay out the kind of cash needed to buy one of these and not even justify the purchase by using it until almost a year later! I can think of so many other things I could have done with $2500 over that time...

It's what responsible business owners do. It's like buying an insurance policy.
If you run a business and you depend on tech to keep the business running, then you keep a backup machine on the shelf so that you have something to fall back on when your daily driver breaks down.

Anyway... add me to the list of people burned by this problem.
Went to the closet to retrieve a backup machine (a 2019 16" MBP) that's been sitting in the shrink wrap since it was purchased a year ago. Upon unboxing, and plugging it in... IT WONT BOOT UP.
C'mon Apple, it's absolutely unacceptable to charge nearly $5K for a device that bricks itself on day-1.

Got an appointment with the "Genius" bar later today.
Hopefully, they can get this thing up and running soon.

A responsible business owner would verify their backup processes or systems function properly on a regular basis. Nothing worse than

When you need it the most.

Some businesses actually schedule test runs of their disaster recovery sites, literally shutting down their primary data center location and testing the fail-over to the alternate site to make sure the processes work.

touché .... yup, a backup is no good if you can't restore from it.
Shame on me for assuming a brand new machine would work out-of-the-box. Should have tested it before I needed it.

Just back from the Genius bar. They did the revive procedure (as mentioned elsewhere here), and the machine is up and running now.

EDIT: BTW. I 'do' regularly test my Time Machine Backups. So, I know I can restore my data from a Time Machine backup. I should have tested the New-In-The-Box hardware.... dang it!!!!

That’s the theory anyway. You ask a data owner if they have a hot, cold or warm recovery site and quite often you’ll get a blank response. What follows is running around panicking at a man-made, environmental or political disaster.

I was able to "Revive" two 16 inch 2019's via DFU mode. Leaving them plugged in for hours did nothing but after "Reviving" they started to charge.
I hope this helps the next person:

It looks like this issue is still alive & well. I wonder how long before Apple acknowledges that this is a known issue. I too have a 2019 MBP 16 that suffered the same fate. With a wopping battery cycle count of 9, but the battery is clearly dead. Machine was used for. bout a week before it was put into storage over lockdown. And amazing that none of the other devices (much cheaper lenovo models) and mobile phones still mamges to boot up & actually charge their batteries.

Unfortunately according to Apple policy this is a battery issue and will cost £199 to fix. And then you get a 90-day warranty. Awesome service - not! Amazing that my 2011 MBP 15 & 2013 MBP 13 still works perfectly fine, even if stored without charge for some time.
